During his inaugural speech Obama criticized those who, “substitute spectacle for politics, or treat name-calling as reasoned debate.”
Senate Budget Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray said Wednesday that she is fully committed to moving a budget resolution through the Senate this year and called on House Republicans to end their “hostage-taking” and engage with her in writing a deficit reduction deal that can become law.
The comments by the Washington state Democrat will help clear the way for Senate acceptance of a pending debt ceiling bill—to be voted on by the House Wednesday— to allow additional Treasury borrowing through May 18th to finance the government’s obligations.
“So if Republicans are truly interested in moving this debate back into the Budget Committees and back to regular order then they ought to actually deliver on that rhetoric. That means putting a stop to the debt limit hostage-taking, ending the constant brinksmanship, and truly engaging in an honest effort to work with us toward the balanced and bipartisan budget deal the American people expect and deserve.”
