A top US scholar of wartime Japan said Wednesday that the Bush administration’s "war on terror" bore close parallels to Japan’s past militarism through a defiance of international law.

Herbert Bix, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 2001 for his landmark biography of wartime emperor Hirohito, said he believed US aerial bombings and alleged use of torture in Afghanistan and Iraq constituted war crimes.

"The current American rampage in Iraq and elsewhere, not to mention the Bush administration’s threats of war against Iran, so clearly replicates Imperial Japan during the period when its leaders willfully disregarded international law and pursued the diplomacy of force," Bix said during a visit to Tokyo.

Bix compared Japan’s action to current US efforts to scuttle the Treaty of Rome establishing the International Criminal Court, which President George W. Bush argues could unfairly target Americans.

He also said that senior US leaders — not just rank-and-file soldiers — should have been held to account for the killings of 24 civilians in the Iraqi town of Haditha.

"US war criminality is justice institutionalised, as Japan’s once was," Bix said.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Tuesday millions of Iranians would be ready to sacrifice themselves fighting the country’s enemies, in an apparent reference to the United States and its allies.

Ahmadinejad’s statement came a day after an Iranian commander said the Basij religious militia and their spirit of martyrdom could disrupt strategic Gulf oil shipping routes with a small operation.

They both spoke at annual ceremonies marking the death of a 13-year-old Basij, Mohammad Hosseini Fahmideh, who died trying to destroy an Iraqi tank in the 1980s war with Iran’s neighbor.

"Enemies of the Iranian nation must know that by the passing away of martyrs like Fahmideh, the hands of the Iranian people are not empty," Ahmadinejad told a crowd of student Basij members in Tehran, the official IRNA news agency reported.

"And today millions of Fahmidehs are standing fresher and more prepared," he said.

He said the Austrian Green Party, the third largest party in Austria, has expressed its support for the Islamic community in many gatherings.

The eminent politician praised the initiative of the Austrian President Heinz Fischer to organize a reception for the representatives of the Islamic community in Austria and considered it an example to promote Inter-religious and cultural coexistence.

The Sicilian town of Castelbuono has replaced garbage trucks with donkeys and claims to be saving money as well as helping to beat global warming.

Since last February, six donkeys have replaced the four rubbish trucks in the town of 10,000 people.

By replacing garbage trucks with donkeys "we are making savings and making the world a better place" with less pollution, Castlebuono’s mayor Mario Cicero said in a statement on the town’s website.

Indonesian police have arrested a Muslim sect’s leader on suspicion of defaming Islam after he declared himself a new prophet, an official said Wednesday.

Ahmad Mushaddeq and six of his followers surrendered themselves to police Monday following strong condemnations of his sect, called Al-Qiyadah Al-Islamiyah.

Mushaddeq, a retired civil servant, could be sentenced to up to five years in prison if he is charged and convicted of blasphemy.

Anbar awakening has spread to Taji which is very significant since it’s a joint Shia and Sunni movement…

The reconciliation of Sunnis and Shi’ites across Iraq in a national movement to reject al-Qaeda is an example of this and was made possible by the troop surge. The reconciliation movement is evident in an area north of Baghdad called Taji. Tom Burke, the team leader for the Taji Embedded Provincial Reconstruction Team, or EPRT, calls this reconciliation the "Taji Awakening."

"(The Taji Awakening) involves all the sheiks (in Taji), both Sunni and Shi’a. Over the period of four weeks now, it has gathered momentum," Burke said. "The movement here has become dynamic."

He said that the largest gathering of Sunni and Shi’a sheiks in Iraq occurred on Aug. 20 in the Taji area and that the terrorist forces in the area are now "on the run" because of the sectarian reconciliation. As a result, the overall quality of life in rural North Baghdad Province has improved, with marketplaces "flourishing" and critical infrastructure needs being met, according to Burke.

Col. Bridges said that the sheiks realized this year that they really were neighbors who have lived together for a very long time. They are now using their traditional roles to bring about the sectarian reconciliation.

"It’s been building momentum," he said. "More and more of them are saying ‘Hmm. (Al-Qaeda in Iraq) is just a few guys. This is our home.‘ They’re coming together and are looking for some kind of means to make this legitimate. The first (reconciliation meeting) I went to was only a dozen sheiks. The next one was 120. I didn’t go to the next one, but our boss, Mr. Burke, did, and there were 1,000 Sunni and Shi’a tribal leaders together under one tent. Their family members were wearing T-shirts that said ‘One Iraq, Stop Sectarianism, Stop the Violence.’

Cellular phone shop owners in Bajaur took this decision at a meeting held in Khar, the agency headquarters.

This follows in the wake of militants bombing a cellular phone market a few days ago in Inayat Kalay, around seven kilometres from Khar. The market housed 30 shops dealing in cellular phones

NEW DELHI: The Pakistani Army is "bleeding", and quite profusely at that, in its ongoing bloody skirmishes with extremists in the tribal areas bordering Afghanistan, with a "high" casualty rate as well as "unprecedented" levels of desertions, suicides and discharge applications.

This is the "assessment" of the Indian security establishment closely tracking developments in Pakistan’s federally administered tribal areas (FATA), especially the Waziristan region, as also the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) and Balochistan.

The loud and clear indicator for this came on Tuesday, with a suicide attack near the heavily-fortified Pakistani Army HQ in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, killing at least seven people. The secure compound, incidentally, also houses President Pervez Musharraf’s office.

In recent days, Pakistan has been rocked by several suicide attacks and bombings, most of which are being traced back to Islamic extremists under attack from security forces near the Afghan border.

"These outfits were once nurtured by ISI, and now the chickens are coming home to roost. Our estimates show around 1,000 Pakistani soldiers have been killed in the fighting. Casualties in ‘Operation Al Mizan’ in north Waziristan have been particularly high," said an official.

"As per our intelligence inputs, Pakistani officers are jostling with low morale among their troops. The abductions and killings of soldiers by militants have only added to the disenchantment among troops, which is being reflected in a large number of desertions, suicides and AWOL (absent without leave) cases," he added.

In fact, reports of soldiers even refusing to obey orders have begun to emerge from Waziristan now, in what is being seen as a blow to the otherwise well-disciplined Pakistani Army.

Hezbollah has tripled its arsenal of C-802 land-to-sea missiles and has rehabilitated its military strength north of the Litani River, according to information handed over by Israel to the United Nations.

The report states that, according to Israel, Hezbollah’s long-range missile teams are deployed north of the river, and that "most of the new missiles include [the Iranian-made] Zelzal and Fajr missiles that have a range of over 250 kilometers and are capable of hitting areas south of Tel Aviv."

The report added that Israel says Hezbollah has established an anti-aircraft unit armed with surface-to-air missiles.

Ban said Israel has also informed the UN of an increase in Hezbollah activity south of the Litani, but stressed that Israel refused to provided intelligence information on the matter due to the sensitive nature of the sources.

An IDF soldier fled an interrogation room by exposing her breasts to a stunned officer.

The soldier was interrogated at the Biranit army base on the northern border after she refused to undergo a drugs test. A short while after her questioning began the soldier was seen walking out of the interrogation room and heading toward the main gate.

An officer at the base told her she was under arrest and demanded that she return to the interrogation room, at which point the soldier took her shirt off and told the officer: "Let’s see if you can arrest me."

The soldier took advantage of the officer’s momentary lack of concentration and quickly left the base. She was caught a short while later.

The seventh-grade book has three chapters about the Islamic faith. It mentions Jesus twice and devotes a paragraph to other major religions, said Jim and Korina Self.

The couple is collecting signatures on a petition asking the local school board to remove the textbook from classrooms.

The book should be used as part of a broader curriculum, said Natasha Martin, a spokeswoman for the Rancho Cordova-based publisher, Teachers’ Curriculum Institute.

She and Lodi school officials said the text was approved by the California State Board of Education.

"It is common for parents in the state to raise concerns about the teaching of Islam because they do not know that it is required by the state standards, and they don’t understand that all major religions are taught as part of the sixth- and seventh-grade world history courses," Martin said in a statement.

"History Alive!: The Medieval World and Beyond" also drew protests in an Arizona school district. It was withdrawn by the publisher before the end of a trial period there.

Seattle Post-Intelligencer op-ed writer and douche Royal Dorothy Parvaz writes about the case of a man who planned to burn down San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral.   In her view, burning down a church is an acceptable form of arson because it represents an "oppressive" institution.  Proving yet again that "progressives" hatred for Christianity is ingrained in their DNA.  I’m sure if it was a mosque she would have been outraged….

On the one hand, I can understand the power of the image to someone who sees the church as an oppressive institution. On the other hand…it’s still arson. The Orwellian program requires the approximately 7,000 students in Delaware’s residence halls to adopt highly specific university-approved views on issues ranging from politics to race, sexuality, sociology, moral philosophy, and environmentalism. The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) is calling for the total dismantling of the program, which is a flagrant violation of students’ rights to freedom of conscience and freedom from compelled speech.

The university’s views are forced on students through a comprehensive manipulation of the residence hall environment, from mandatory training sessions to “sustainability” door decorations. Students living in the university’s eight housing complexes are required to attend training sessions, floor meetings, and one-on-one meetings with their Resident Assistants (RAs). The RAs who facilitate these meetings have received their own intensive training from the university, including a “diversity facilitation training” session at which RAs were taught, among other things, that “[a] racist is one who is both privileged and socialized on the basis of race by a white supremacist (racist) system. The term applies to all white people (i.e., people of European descent) living in the United States, regardless of class, gender, religion, culture or sexuality.”

At various points in the program, students are also pressured or even required to take actions that outwardly indicate their agreement with the university’s ideology, regardless of their personal beliefs. Such actions include displaying specific door decorations, committing to reduce their ecological footprint by at least 20%, taking action by advocating for an “oppressed” social group, and taking action by advocating for a “sustainable world.”

Bethlehem – Ma’an – The Al-Qassam Brigades are preparing to start attacking the Israelis inside their territories if the Israelis do not stop targeted assassinations against Palestinians, a Hamas leader announced on Tuesday.

Sheikh Nimir Hamdan said that he had met with the general commander of the Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas movement, Muhammad Daif.

He said Daif told him, "The Al-Qassam Brigades are preparing within a few weeks to start attacking the Israelis inside their territories instead of taking a defensive position only."

The electronic website of Palestine Live stated that Hamdan quoted Daif as saying that "The Al-Qassam Brigades will strike the Israeli occupying entity very strongly if the targeted killings against Palestinians and the incursions into West Bank and Gaza Strip do not stop."

Muhammad Daif has survived several assassination attempts by the Israelis.

Veteran Palestinian Authority lawmaker Hanan Ashrawi, who represents PA Prime Minister Salaam Fayad’s Third-Wave party, defended both Hamas and Hizbullah in a speech at Emory University in Atlanta on Monday night.

"The [Second Lebanon] War proved [Israel] could not defeat a nation fighting for freedom," Ashrawi said. Later, the Christian lawmaker blamed Hamas’s January 2006 election victory on Israel, saying the occupation bred extremism.

Ashrawi also discussed the plight of the Palestinian people, saying they had plunged into a deep depression with unemployment and poverty at record levels, and that peace was the only answer.

Ashrawi’s lecture was part of a series of speeches on the Emory campus focusing on peace-building in wartorn regions. One of the more controversial talks was by former US president Jimmy Carter, who spoke about his much-criticized book, Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid. The book was condemned by many for comparing Israeli actions to the oppression of blacks under South Africa’s apartheid regime.

A MAJOR Islamic group has hit out at Australia’s most senior Catholic clergyman, Cardinal George Pell, over his comments on Muslims’ failure to assimilate, saying they were politically divisive during an election campaign.

But Australian Federation of Islamic Councils president Ikebal Adam Patel did not seem to realise the comments attributed to Dr Pell were made eight months ago. (HA! stupid fucks -ed.)

"It is obvious that this could be made an election issue in the name of our migration policy," Mr Patel said.

In a speech in March, Dr Pell said Muslim integration was important for better relations, but non-Muslims in Islamic countries were often not given the same rights as Muslims.

"In fact, Christians are being harassed and even persecuted in many countries ranging from Nigeria through Sudan, where some are being sold as slaves, and the Middle East to Pakistan and Indonesia," he said. "I would like to know where our friends stand on these matters."

"It’s not appropriate that Muslims regularly reply to criticism with insults, denigration and evasions while avoiding the point of issue, and unfortunately we’ve seen too much of this from some Muslim public personalities," Dr Pell said.

Nader’s lawsuit, filed in District of Columbia Superior Court, also named as co-defendants Kerry’s campaign, the Service Employees International Union and several so-called 527 organizations such as America Coming Together, which were created to promote voter turnout on behalf of the Democratic ticket.

The lawsuit also alleges that the Democratic National Committee conspired to force Nader off the ballot in several states.

"The Democratic Party is going after anyone who presents a credible challenge to their monopoly over their perceived voters," Nader said in a statement. "This lawsuit was filed to help advance a free and open electoral process for all candidates and voters. Candidate rights and voter rights nourish each other for more voices, choices, and a more open and competitive democracy.”

The Pennsylvania missionary operates an orphanage for victims of the war in Sudan’s Darfur region and he’s in a fight with federal aviation officials over a $28,000 fine for some supplies he tried to send to his children in Africa.

For more than a decade, he has transported needed supplies to operate its power-generator in a clearly marked Rubbermaid container. That is until April, when three quarts of motor oil, two bottles of diesel treatment and a can of WD-40 spray lubricant in the crate were confiscated by airline screeners.

Mr. Childers, president of World Missions Shekinah Fellowship, apologized in a later letter to U.S. government officials, saying he was not aware the supplies were classified as "hazardous materials" and illegal to ship by commercial plane.

The minister thought the matter was resolved. But now, six months later, Mr. Childers has been notified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) he will be fined $28,000 for the transgression.

"We don’t have that kind of money to start with, I just don’t know what to do," said Mr. Childers, who operates the shelter for 200 children whose parents have been killed in the bloody civil war in Sudan.
