ALGIERS, May 31 (Reuters) – Algeria hit back on Saturday at foreign accusations minority Christians are harassed, saying Protestant evangelicals were secretly trying to divide Algerians to colonise the mainly Muslim north African country.

Abu Amrane Chikh, head of the government-appointed Higher Islamic Council, said uproar in the West over a recent prosecution of an Algerian woman on a charge of practising Christianity was being fomented for the benefit of foreigners.

"There are some church evangelists and reformist journalists who want to sow discord among brothers, and their long-term political goal is to create a Christian minority coupled with some foreign institutions," he said in an interview with the website of the El Khabar daily newspaper.

"This is a new form of colonization that is hidden behind freedom of worship,"said Chikh, whose body regulates religious practice in the former French colony.

"The evangelist movement is characterized by a secret activity that violates the Koran and the Sunna in one way or another," he said, referring to Islam's holy book and Islamic practice based on words and deeds of the Prophet.

An al-Qaeda trainer and explosives specialist involved in a range of European terrorist networks has been killed in Pakistan, the latest senior militant to die in a spate of controversial American missile strikes.

The death two weeks ago of Abu Suleiman al-Jazairi, a highly experienced Algerian militant, has been confirmed only in the last few days, intelligence sources in Pakistan and Western Europe told The Observer. Al-Jazairi, thought to have been 45, died along with at least 15 others when the house in which he was staying in Pakistan's Bajaur tribal district was hit by a missile fired from a Predator, an American pilotless drone.

Details are only now emerging about the strike on Damadola, a village near the Afghan-Pakistan border hit twice in the past. The house targeted and destroyed by the drone is believed to belong to a former Afghan Taliban defence minister, Maulvi Obaidullah, members of whose family, including women and children, are thought to have died. The surrounding area is in the hands of militants linked to the Pakistan Taliban militant group who have been blamed for the killing of Benazir Bhutto last year.

The death of al-Jazairi, thought to have been director of external operations for al-Qaeda and thus responsible for running the terrorist group's European and British networks,was cited by CIA chief Michael Hayden last week as one of the reasons for the 'strategic defeat' of al-Qaeda. Another top militant, Abu Laith al-Libi, was killed in February.

Mr Qaradawi believes that:

- Israel should be removed from all Muslim land.

- Muslims all over the world should involve themselves directly in the Israel-Palestine conflict and decide on the fate of Jerusalem — stating that “Palestinians do not have the competence to decide on the fate of Jerusalem”.

- Muslims should not be friends with Jews in general and Israelis in particular as this would diminish their appetite for fighting.

- Every Jew in the world is an enemy.

The book also covers his well-known views on the legitimacy of suicide bombers and whether or not Muslims should buy anything that has any connection with Israel and its supporters.

It has been reviewed by Mark Gardner and David Rich of the Community Security Trust for Democratiya, a quarterly internet journal based at Edge Hill University, in Ormskirk, Lancs, dealing with global politics.

The bulk of the book forms a diatribe against Israel and Jews.

Four Seattle University seniors who tried to organize an off-campus party over Memorial Day weekend say it was supposed to be a last hurrah before graduation with a theme that pokes fun at fraternity and sorority types.

Women were to wear Victoria's Secret Pink-brand sweats or Abercrombie & Fitch clothing and talk constantly on their cellphones, according to the invitation on the social-networking site Facebook. Guys were to wear turned-up — "popped" — collars, aviator sunglasses and flip-flops. The event was dubbed the "Douchebag" party.

But when Seattle U. administrators found the invite on Facebook, they were not impressed.

"Be advised that your online advertising for the party of Sunday May 25th is potentially in violation of the Seattle University Code of Student Conduct," wrote Glen Butterworth, assistant to the dean of students, in an e-mail to the seniors. "You will be held responsible if you host an event with a theme of gender bias."

A police community support officer ordered two Christian preachers to stop handing out gospel leaflets in a predominantly Muslim area of Birmingham.

Arthur Cunningham, 48, and Joseph Abraham, 65, both full-time evangelical ministers, have launched legal action against West Midlands Police, claiming the officer infringed their right to profess their religion.

The preachers, both ministers in Birmingham, were handing out leaflets on Alum Rock Road in February when they started talking to four Asian youths.

A police community support officer (PCSO) interrupted the conversation and began questioning the ministers about their beliefs.

They said when the officer realised they were American, although both have lived in Britain for many years, he launched a tirade against President Bush and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mr Cunningham said: "I told him that this had nothing to do with the gospel we were preaching but he became very aggressive.

"He said we were in a Muslim area and were not allowed to spread our Christian message. He said we were committing a hate crime by telling the youths to leave Islam  and said that he was going to take us to the police station."

The ministers claim he also advised them not to return to the area. As he walked away, the PCSO said: "You have been warned. If you come back here and get beaten up, well you have been warned".

West Midlands Police, who refused to apologise, said the incident had been "fully investigated" and the officer would be given training in understanding hate crime and communication.

The frontrunner to become Israel’s next prime minister, Tzipi Livni, was a Paris agent for Mossad, Israel’s overseas intelligence agency, in the early 1980s when it ran a series of missions to kill Palestinian terrorists in European capitals, according to former colleagues.

They say Livni, now foreign minister, was on active service when Mamoun Meraish, a senior official in the Palestine Liberation Organisation, was shot dead by a Mossad hit squad in Athens on August 21, 1983. Shortly afterwards Livni resigned and returned to Israel to complete her law studies, citing the pressures of the job.

Livni joined Mossad after leaving the army with the rank of lieutenant and completing a year at law school. From her base in Paris she travelled throughout Europe in pursuit of Arab terrorists.

The French administration has moved to create an official country dancing diploma as part of a drive to regulate the fad. Authorised instructors who have been on publicly funded training courses will be put in charge of line dancing lessons and balls.

The rules, which come into force next year, come after the rapid spread of country and western in France, where an estimated 100,000 people line dance several times a week. Jean Chauveau, the chairman of the country section of the French Dance Federation, said: “It's growing at a crazy rate. There are thousands of clubs and more are springing up all the time.”

Barack Obama has resigned his 20 year membership in the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago in the aftermath of inflammatory remarks by his longtime pastor the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and more recent fiery remarks at the church by another minister.

Obama campaign communications director Robert Gibbs said Obama had resigned from the church "over the last few days."

Campaign aides said they weren't immediately certain how the resignation took place, whether by letter or in some other fashion, and were trying to find out.

The development came as Obama campaigned in South Dakota.

Obama said he disagreed with Wright but initially portrayed him as a family member he couldn't disown. The preacher had officiated at Obama's wedding and been his spiritual mentor for some 20 years.

His remarks have since prompted an outcry from fundamentalist women, who are fighting or pleading for the right to be terrorists.

On May 20, 2008, the al-Quds Brigades, the armed wing of Islamic Jihad, announced that it had arrested three men who they claimed were part of a larger "cell" working with Israeli security services. A statement said that: "The cell that was uncovered by the Security Apparatus of the Al-Quds Battalions includes very dangerous collaborators who were recruited by the Occupation in the 1990s."

An Islamic Jihad spokesman who gave his name as "Abu Ahmad" told Human Rights Watch in a telephone interview that the group held the men in a private detention center and interrogated them for close to two weeks.

"An armed group like al-Quds Brigades has no legal right to arrest, detain, or interrogate suspects," said Joe Stork, deputy director of Human Rights Watch.

The latest scheme put forward by Schools Secretary Ed Balls was greeted with derision.

Critics branded the proposals by the under-fire minister unworkable and unnecessary.

The package of measures, to be published next week, will set out a proposal to invite British-born imams into schools to speak about growing violent extremism among young people.

Under the plans, the imams would teach citizenship so that pupils learn about the Koran and Islam in the context of a multicultural society. But last night the scheme was described as yet another worthless Government gimmick.

Opponents said the plans would simply provide another opportunity to deliver “faith-based citizenship lessons” on Islam.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip: Health officials say an explosion in the house of a Hamas militant has killed the man and wounded 16 relatives and neighbors.

The Palestinian Interior Ministry says it's investigating the cause of Saturday's blast at the home of Hamas activist Nader Abu Shaban.

Hamas officials say Abu Shaban was handling explosives when the blast went off. Doctors say two of the 16 wounded are in critical condition.

Gaza militants frequently store and handle explosives in crowded residential areas. Such blasts have killed and wounded bystanders in the past.

Abu Kawik's said her family, living in the United Arab Emirates, has repeatedly asked her to leave Gaza. But she insisted on staying because of her hopes for the Fulbright grant.

"Now I don't know what to do — to wait by myself in Gaza for another year with no guarantee what the answer will be?" Abu Kawik said. "Actually I just don't know. I was astonished at how the United States government cannot get a few students out of Gaza."

The American Civil Liberties Union says an Ohio judge has again posted the Ten Commandments in his courtroom, defying rulings that he not display them.

The group on Thursday asked a federal court to hold Richland County Common Pleas Judge James DeWeese in contempt.

In 2005, the U.S. Supreme Court let stand a lower court's decision that a framed poster of the commandments in DeWeese's court violated the Constitution.

DeWeese denies he's displaying the Ten Commandments now and accuses the ACLU of attempting to silence speech.

While there is currently a poster in his courtroom that includes the commandments, DeWeese says it illustrates a debate about philosophies that affect the handling of criminal cases.

Algeria Shuts Down 26 Protestant Churches- Christian Post

Authorities in the overwhelmingly Muslim nation of Algeria have closed half of the Protestant churches in the country over the last six months, alerted persecution watchdog groups this week.

Twenty-six Algerian churches were shut down either by official written order or verbal warning since November 2007, according to Open Doors USA. The churches, ranging in size from several dozens to more than 1,000 members, are victims of a recent aggressive campaign against Christians.

It is feared that if persecution continues all the churches will be closed by the end of the year

John Bolton, the former American ambassador to the UN, has brushed off an attempted citizen’s arrest at the Hay Festival in Wales as “comic”.

Dismissing Mr Monbiot’s attempted citizen’s arrest as “street theatre”, he claimed not to have been aware of much opposition towards his visit.

“I don’t see a lot of it, I must say,” he said. “I would assess it in the same way I assess Monbiot – as an indication of the larger potential problem.”

Claims have been circulating that he pulled out of a talk today at the Ideas Festival in Bristol because of threats of disruption by the Stop the War coalition. Mr Bolton said they were unfounded.

He said the reason was a contractual dispute over the payment of his expenses between the organisers of the Hay and Bristol festivals.

“I would be delighted to go to Bristol and face the fruitcakes down,” he said.

Barack Obama’s favorability ratings among white women has declined significantly in recent months, particularly among Democrats and independents, presenting an immediate obstacle for the likely Democratic nominee as he moves to shore up his party’s base.

According to a new report by The Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, half of white women now have a negative perception of Obama.

Forty-nine percent of white women view Obama unfavorably, while only 43 percent hold a favorable opinion. In February, 36 percent of these women viewed Obama unfavorably, while 56 percent had a positive perception of the likely Democratic nominee.

GUNMEN have shot dead five teenage boys who were returning home after playing a cricket match in the troubled south-western Pakistani province of Baluchistan.

The teenagers, aged between 15 and 19, were killed today in the provincial capital Quetta, said city police chief Rehmatullah Niazi.
 
He said three died at the scene and while the other two died in the hospital. Residents said the boys were members of a school cricket team.
