Earlier, I mentioned the Obsession DVD that was inserted in millions of newspapers around the country. That DVD paints a rigid and extreme vision of Islam, with intent to mislead rather than inform. Now, the predictable result of that hate-mongering propaganda is beginning to manifest; on Friday, a mosque in Dayton, OH was tear-gassed, with women and children inside:

…..Anyone who tries to disclaim any link between this despicable attack and the release of 20 million copies of the Obsession DVD is either a fool or a liar.That DVD was intended to bring about precisely this kind of demonization. What is most shocking about the Obsession DVD is that it is most likely funded by the very people you would think would know all too well the wages of this kind of directed hate, scapegoating, and fear-mongering.

Incidentally, it doesn't stop here. There's a new Islamophobic film due to be released in early October, in time for Eid al Fitr: The Third Jihad. This is a "tsunami of Islamophobia" that is clearly aimed at influencing the election in November.

A U.S. pilotless drone fired two missiles at a house in northwest Pakistan killing five people, Pakistani intelligence agency officials said Wednesday.

Frustrated by an intensifying Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan, U.S. forces have in the past month carried out seven missile strikes by pilotless drones and a commando raid on the Pakistani side of the border.

In the latest attack, a drone fired two missiles at a house near the town of Mir Ali in North Waziristan, at about midnight Tuesday (1800 GMT), two intelligence agency officials said.

The area is a known sanctuary for Pakistani Taliban and foreign militants near the Afghan border.

"We have reports of five dead including foreign militants," said one of the officers, who declined to be identified as he is not authorized to speak to the media.

"By that standard, the Iranian government is both oppressive and barbaric. Under (President Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad's rule, Iranian women are some of the most vulnerable citizens. If an Iranian woman shows too much hair in public, she risks being beaten or killed."

There's an important caveat to make here, though. The beatings are not administered by the government as punishment for an improper hejab — that was outlawed in 1988. Rather they are imposed in the course of an arrest and are generally due to resistance, according to the vast majority of news accounts we read (yes, you read that right, the women brought it upon themselves -ed.) and our interviews with experts on Iran. (Similarly, plenty of protesters in the United States are arrested, but it would be innaccurate to say they're arrested for protesting — in fact they're arrested for other offenses, such as ignoring police requirements about where to protest, or disrupting traffic.)

So it was misleading for Palin to suggest beatings are punishment for immodesty in Iran. More to the point, the restrictions related to modesty are routinely flouted without consequence. And her claim that killing was a possible consequence of immodesty pushed her statement into the realm of outright falsehood. (Bullshit, women are stoned to death for alleged immoral behavior, to suggest otherwise is an outright lie -ed.)

(IsraelNN.com) – Dutch legislator Geert Wilders, producer of the movie Fitna exposing the Koran's incitement to violence, announced that a "Facing Jihad Conference" will take place in Jerusalem in December. "We are organizing this event in Israel to emphasize the fact that we are all in the same boat together," he said in a speech in New York.

Wilders' 15-minute film earlier this year set off violent protests in Muslim countries because of the description of the Muslim prophet Mohammed as a murderer. He is teaming up with Knesset Member Prof. Aryeh Eldad (National Union) for the Jerusalem convention, where he vowed "no racist organizations will be allowed." (they'll still be called fascists -ed.)

City Council members are calling on the state to give New York City children the day off from school on two Muslim holidays.

On Friday, the council will debate a resolution urging the state Legislature to pass a law declaring the Muslim holidays of Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha to be observed holidays in the city's public school system.

According to the resolution's sponsor, Council Member Robert Jackson of Manhattan, the issue is a matter of fairness, as Muslim students make up a significant percentage of the public school population.

"You have 10% of the student population out of 1.1 million children, so over 100,000 students, who are Muslim," Mr. Jackson said yesterday in an interview. "There was a situation about two or three years ago where they held a big exam on one of the highest holy days and parents had to make a choice: Do I send my kids in to take this exam or do we celebrate our religious holiday? That should not be the case. It doesn't happen on Christmas, it doesn't happen on Easter, it doesn't happen on other major religious holidays."

CHICAGO (AP) — A 24-year-old convert to Islam has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for plotting to set off hand grenades in a crowded shopping mall during the Christmas season.

Derrick Shareef must serve 30 of those years — with five off for good behavior — unless he can get an appeals court to reduce the sentence.

He was arrested in 2006 on charges of scheming to use weapons of mass destruction at the Cherryvale Mall in the northern Illinois city of Rockford.

Shareef described himself as a devout Muslim who once admired Osama bin Laden but has now realized violence is wrong.

KLINA, Kosovo (Reuters)- Hundreds of Kosovar Albanians gather on Sundays to attend religious services in a still unfinished red-brick church in the Kosovo town of Klina.

Turning away from the majority Muslim faith imposed by the Ottoman Turks centuries ago, these worshippers are part of a revival of Catholicism in the newly independent Balkan state.

"We have been living a dual life. In our homes we were Catholics but in public we were good Muslims,"said Ismet Sopi. "We don't call this converting. It is the continuity of the family's belief."

Sopi has commuted 40 km (25 miles) every Sunday from central Kosovo to Klina to attend a morning mass since he formally became a Roman Catholic five months ago. This September was the first holy month of Ramadan during which no one in his 32-member family fasted.

The majority of ethnic Albanians were forcibly converted to Islam, mostly through the imposition of high taxes on Catholics, when the Ottoman Empire ruled the Balkans.

For centuries, many remembered their Christian roots and lived as what they call "Catholics in hiding". Some, nearly a century after the Ottomans left the Balkans, now see the chance to reveal their true beliefs.

"Fifty or sixty percent of the population are linked emotionally with the Roman Catholic religion. This is because of feelings about what our ancestors believed,"said Muhamet Mala, a professor who teaches History of Religion at Pristina Public University.

An Islamist group in Somalia has destroyed a derelict church in the southern port town of Kismayo, an eyewitness has told the BBC.

The destruction took place after prayers to mark the Eid al-Fitr festival at the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The al-Shabab group took control of Kismayo in fierce fighting last month.

They say they will build a mosque on the site of the colonial-era church, which has not been used for many years.

Almost the entire Somali population is Muslim. Some Christian groups have complained about persecution.

In 2005, an Islamist group dug up graves from an Italian colonial cemetery in the capital, Mogadishu, and built a mosque on the site.

An al-Shabab spokesman has said they wanted to destroy the church in retaliation for the destruction of a mosque in Ethiopia.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai made a fresh appeal to Taliban supremo Mullah Mohammed Omar to join peace negotiations, guaranteeing immunity from foreign forces.

His call, as a part of repeated efforts to find a breakthrough in his fight against terrorism in the country came on the first day of Eid ul-Fitr, the religious holiday that comes at the end of the Muslim month of fasting, or Ramadan.

Karzai, who often insisted that negotiating with the militants would not include Mullah Omar, changed his stance during a press conference held in his presidential palace Tuesday.

He even went to the extent of inviting the renegade leader, who is one of the most wanted persons on Washington's terrorist list, to join his ministry.

"Come to your own homeland, and construct your country," Karzai said. "Don't be afraid of foreigners; we will stand in front of them so that they don't hurt you," he added, referring to around 70,000 international troops deployed in Afghanistan.

NAZRAN, Russia: A suicide car bomber blew himself up on Tuesday in Russia's southern republic of Ingushetia in an apparent attempt to kill the region's Interior Minister, police said.

Three bystanders and a motorist were wounded in the region's main city of Nazran when the bomber blew up his Lada saloon as Interior Minister Mussa Medov and his bodyguards pulled alongside in their armoured Mercedes, a police source said.

Medov and his bodyguards were not hurt, although their vehicle was severely damaged and a two-metre wide crater was left in the road surface, said a Reuters reporter who visited the scene of the explosion.

"It's difficult right now to determine the comparative force of the explosion, but I'm certain it was no less than two kilograms (4.409 lbs) of explosive material," an investigator at the blast site said.

In a reversal of past practice, people wearing face coverings will not be permitted to vote in the upcoming election unless they swear a special oath.

The change is based on a policy directive from chief electoral officer Marc Mayrand. It instructs returning officers to ask voters with obscured faces to uncover or swear they are eligible to vote before being allowed to cast ballots.

But the new policy seems to be at odds with the Canada Elections Act, which has no requirement that federal electors show their faces.

It also contradicts comments made by Mayrand before last September's Quebec by-elections when he rebuffed demands from the Conservatives to use his powers to force Muslim women wearing veils to uncover their faces.

However, John Enright, an Elections Canada spokesperson, said Mayrand's changes are permitted under the Canada Elections Act.

GARISSA, Kenya, September 29  –A longstanding effort to replace a church with a mosque in Kenya’s northern town of Garissa culminated in an attack by 50 Muslim youths this month that left the worship building in ruins.

The gang stormed the building of Redeemed Gospel Church on Sept. 14 and pelted the congregation with stones, sending many Christians fleeing while others became embroiled in fistfights. Ten Christians received hospital treatment for minor injuries and were released.

Church leaders said the Muslim mob also destroyed pews, damaged the church building’s walls of corrugated iron, smashed the glass-mounted pulpit and burned the church banner with its stand.

“We had just started the Sunday service when, without warning, a rowdy group of about 50 Muslim youths invaded the church, pelting stones at us and destroying our structures,”said the church youth chairman, identified only as Suma.

Local media reported that the 10 church members were hospitalized, but a district nurse at the hospital told Compass that no one was admitted due to the violence.A church elder at East Africa Pentecostal Church in Garissa, about 400 kilometers (249 miles) from Nairobi, confirmed that the church members were treated at the hospital and allowed to go home.

Obama seriously considering his offer…..

LONDON (Reuters) – Taliban leader Mullah Omar on Monday urged U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan to withdraw or face a similar defeat to occupying Soviet troops a generation ago.

In a rare message, posted on militant websites and monitored by the U.S.-based SITE intelligence group, Omar offered a bargain to the U.S.-led forces that drove the Taliban from power in 2001 but are now fighting a fierce insurgency by the Islamist militia.

"Reconsider your wrong decision of wrong occupation, and seek a safe exit to withdraw your forces," said the message, which the Taliban said came from Omar.

"If you leave our lands, we can arrange for you a reasonable opportunity for your departure,"he said, adding that the Taliban posed no harm to anyone in the world.

If the occupation persisted, "you will be defeated in all parts of the world … like the former Soviet Union," Omar said.
