Recently, on a children’s TV channel, I was watching a quiz programme. In one of the stages, the anchor provides answers to the contestants, who then have to guess the question. In this particular episode, the host said: “This stands for iman, taqwa and jihad fi sabilillah.” The students thought hard, and then one of them responded: “What is Al Qaeda’s motto?”

The host was shocked. He replied, “I will never ask you about Al Qaeda on this show.” Another student tried his luck: “What is the Pakistan Muslim League’s motto?”

This is how our schoolchildren respond to the Pakistan Army’s motto. We need a desperate image overhaul to say the least.

10/31/2008 - WASHINGTON (AFNS)  – Veterans and servicemembers not in uniform can now render the military-style hand salute during the playing of the national anthem, thanks to changes in federal law that took effect in October.

"The military salute is a unique gesture of respect that marks those who have served in our nation's armed forces,"said Dr. James B. Peake, secretary of Veterans Affairs. "This provision allows the application of that honor in all events involving our nation's flag."

The new provision improves upon a little known change in federal law last year that authorized veterans to render the military-style hand salute during the raising, lowering or passing of the flag, but it did not address salutes during the national anthem. Last year's provision also applied to servicemembers while not in uniform.

INDONESIA has stepped up security around foreign embassies amid fears of attacks as it prepares to execute the three Islamists convicted over the Bali nightclub bombings which killed 202 people.

Police have revealed they had found and defused two bombs in a Balinese Hindu migrant area on Sulawesi island on Wednesday and Thursday as tensions mount ahead of the imminent executions.

"I think there is a connection between this and the execution of Amrozi and others," local police chief Suparni Parto said, referring to bombers Amrozi, Mukhlas and Imam Samudra, who could be executed as early as today.

"The exact date (for the execution) is the Attorney-General's Office's decision but the police are ready for the execution to be carried out any time."

A source described the skit as “savage,” in portraying Olbermann as a deranged person living at home with his mother. Affleck, said a source, became uneasy with Olbermann in attendance at the 3 p.m., closed-set rehearsal.

But Olbermann, through a spokesman, was complimentary on his first time being mocked on "SNL" — a position his MSNBC colleague Chris Matthews has been in over the years.

“I’m not Sarah Palin,” Olbermann said. “I know how valuable it is to me. And it’s funny."

No Combat Deaths Reported In Iraq In October- UPI

October could mark the first month since the war in Iraq began in which no U.S. service personnel died in combat in Baghdad, officials said.

As of Thursday, the U.S. Defense Department reported 13 U.S. troops died in October, USA Today said Friday. If the number holds, it would tie July for the lowest monthly U.S. death toll since the war began 5 1/2 years ago.

Militant groups are moving their base to Afghanistan where U.S. fatalities in October were higher than those in Iraq for the second straight month, the Pentagon said. As of Thursday, 15 U.S. troops died in Afghanistan in October.

"What you're seeing is a migration of the extremists from one area to the other," said Navy Capt. Jack Hanzlik, a spokesman for the military's Central Command, which oversees both Iraq and Afghanistan. "They're not having the success that they had in Iraq and they're looking for other places to go."

Like most Republicans, he worships once a week and staunchly opposes abortion and gay marriage.

But this year, Nona — who like the majority of Iraqi-Americans is not Muslim, but Christian — will vote for Sen. Barack Obama.

To understand why, one must look to Mosul, the longtime home of Iraq's Christian population, which lately has been a wellspring of violence. Over the last month, several there have been the victims of murderous extremism, and at least one church has been bombed. More than 2,000 Christian families have evacuated their homes, according to the Human Rights Ministry. No one has claimed responsibility for the violence.

President George W. Bush has been slow to acknowledge the exodus, infuriating many Iraqi-American Christians who were among the president's earliest and staunchest supporters.

"He's basically destroyed one of the most ancient Christian communities in world," said Ron Stockton, a professor at the University of Michigan-Dearborn and co-author of the Detroit Arab-American Study, which explored attitudes toward Arab-Americans in the months following Sept. 11. "This is his unintended legacy."

"Most Americans have no clue that the biggest victims of this war made by this Christian president have been the Christians of Iraq," (we are the exception -ed.)said James Zogby, who runs the Arab-American Institute.

This year, because of newly formed bitterness toward the Bush administration, that is likely to change.

Nona is no longer willing to call himself a Republican because of the president's perceived lack of interest in the Christian massacre. "I think it's the ultimate irony that the lasting legacy of this great country's fight against Islamic fundamentalism is the destruction of one of the oldest Christian communities in the world," he said.

Martin Manna, head of the Chaldean-American Chamber of Commerce, in Farmington Hills, Mich., said Bush's tepid response to the violence signals his embarrassment over a failed war policy. It also symbolizes a breach of loyalty to Chaldean-Americans, who have been quick to sign up as translators for U.S. military in Iraq, said Manna. "Our folks stepped up every time, and this is the thank-you we receive."

THE mother of two of the Bali bombers on death row says her sons were right to "kill infidels", as they prepare to face firing squads over the attacks which killed 202 people.

Seventy-year-old Tariem spoke today in her house in the village of Tenggulun, East Java, after working all day in her fields and visiting the mosque.

"I don't cry. I leave it all to God," she said as convicted terrorists Amrozi and Mukhlas, two of her 13 children, waited for the firing squad in a prison on the other side of Java.

"I feel that killing infidels isn't a mistake because they don't pray," she said as she sat on the stone floor of the family home surrounded by Amrozi's children and wife.

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 29 (UPI) –Actor Sean Penn escorted activist and San Francisco congressional candidate Cindy Sheehan to the San Francisco premiere of his new film Milk.

Penn, a San Francisco resident, plays the title character in the film about the life and assassination of San Francisco Supervisor and gay-rights leader Harvey Milk.

Like Sheehan, Penn is a longtime critic of the Bush administration and its handling of the Iraq war. His political activism has included a tour of Iraq and travel to post-Katrina New Orleans, Sheehan's campaign said in a news release.

A group of Muslims in Reading feel victimised by a Government initiative designed to tackle violent extremism and feel it could cause more harm than good.

A crisis group has been set up with the support of more than 1,000 Muslims in Reading who object to the local steps being taken under the Government’s Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE) strategy launched this year.

…..The Reading Muslim PVE Crisis Group particularly objects to the council’s adoption of the National Indicator NI35 – a controversial framework which singles out the Muslim community as the main group to look out for in building communities resilient to violent extremism.

It is also concerned about a new PVE toolkit which will be provided to school teachers to look out for signs of “radicalisation” in pupils – a move which the group labels “absurd and disturbing”. Members are also concerned about the possible appointment of special PVE officers at Thames Valley Police.

A statement from the group to Michael Coughlin, chief executive of Reading Borough Council, and Superintendent Steve Kirk said: “The PVE work relies on a number of volatile terms such as ‘extremism’, ‘violent extremism’ and ‘radicalisation’.

“These terms are undefined but have been used by members of the Government to demonise the Muslim community by equating Islamic values such as the desire for Muslim unity and adherence to Sharia law with ‘extremism’ or ‘violent extremism’.

On Thursday, a little-known group calling itself Hezbollah Palestine claimed responsibility for firing a rocket from Gaza into southern Israel.

Israel and militant Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, reached a ceasefire deal in June, that largely ended Palestinian rocket fire on Israeli towns and reprisals.

Manila, 31 Oct. (AKI) – The bishop of Basilan, the restive island in the Philippines' southern archipelago of Sulu, has rejected a controversial request for priests to carry weapons to protect themselves from Islamist terrorists.

The request came after a local priest Felimon Libot and his six security escorts were ambushed on 18 October. The priest escaped unharmed but four people were injured in the attack.

However, Bishop Martin Jumoad said that the request was out of the question.

“I would state categorically that priests in the Prelature of Isabela de Basilan are not allowed to arm themselves," he said in a letter posted on the website of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines on Friday.

Jumoad added that a priest with a gun "sends a bad signal”.

A liberal lawmaker from the south German state of Bavaria has supported the introduction of the Sharia law in his conservative home state, the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper reported Thursday.

Georg Barfuss of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) said the Sharia should be allowed if there areas which are "compatible with the constitution."

The MP, who is also the integration commissioner in Bavaria, added that key elements of Muslim life like prayers, fasting and the pilgrimage to Mecca should be officially recognized in Bavaria.

Barfuss voiced explicit support for building new mosques in his state.

"Muslims should be allowed to build as many mosques as they want," he stressed.

Based on statistics released by Islam-Archive Central Institute, headquartered in the west German town of Soest, there are presently 159 mosques throughout Germany in addition to around 2,600 prayer rooms, congregation houses as well as school mosques and Islamic prayer sites.

There are also plans for the construction of around 184 mosques mostly in the western part of Germany where a sizeable Turkish Muslim community lives.

The western city of Duisburg has been the home to Germany's largest mosque.

Financial strain and an expired lease have caused the East Bay chapter of Code Pink, which has staged protests outside the Marine Corps recruiting center in Downtown Berkeley for over a year, to close its Albany office this week.

The local group became known nationally after it was sanctioned by a city resolution in January 2008 that labeled the Marine recruiters "unwelcome intruders." Nearly a year later, it is left without its longtime center of operations.

The group, which does not receive any funding from its national affiliate, Code Pink Women for Peace, relies on donations and has not yet found a source of funding.

"We've been really struggling this year," said Brenda Hillman, a Code Pink volunteer from Kensington. "It's hard when you put direct energy into activism, you don't have energy to put into fundraising."

The group was funded in large part by $50 monthly pledges from six members until last November, when three stopped donating. Members said other cuts would have to be made in addition to closing the office, which the group rented for $350 per month.

Even without the Albany office, CodePink officials said they will continue to protest the Marines and their recruiting of young people.

"We've been there, and we intend to be there until they leave," Joi said. "We would like to relocate our offices where they are."

At a sports stadium one recent October evening, thousands of Palestinians — 300 newly married couples along with relatives and friends — gathered for a mass wedding celebration, the 10th here this year courtesy of Hamas.

Hamas, the militant Islamist group that controls Gaza, has been observing a truce with Israel since June, allowing its underground fighters to resurface but leaving them without much to do. At the same time, hundreds of the group’s women have been recently widowed, their husbands having been killed either in confrontations with Israel or in the fighting last year between Hamas and its secular rival, Fatah.

Taking advantage of the pause in violence, the Hamas leaders have turned to matchmaking, bringing together single fighters and widows, and providing dowries and wedding parties for the many here who cannot afford such trappings of matrimony.

“Marriage is the same as jihad,”or holy war, said Muhammad Yousef, one recently married member of the Qassam Brigades, the Hamas underground. “With marriage, you are producing another generation that believes in resistance.”

About 300 Qassam members, mostly in their 20s, signed up with their new wives for the most recent celebration,held at a sports stadium in the Tuffah district, east of Gaza City. Local mosques spread the word about the event and offered to help find spouses for single men whose families had not yet managed to arrange them a match.

The polls, carried out and analyzed by Keevoon, a Jerusalem-based research, strategy and communications firm, indicate that 76% of the polled voters in Israel said they voted for Republican candidate John McCain; 24% said they cast their ballot in favor the Democrat, Barack Obama. The information is based on data collected from 817 absentee voters at several voting events in Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv as well as an online survey.

A few interesting figures about the voters:

• A clear correlation was noted between religious observance and voting pattern.
• Turnout among young voters ages 18 to 34 was high (37%)
• 31% were first-time voters
• 25% have lived in Israel for more than 15 years, 33% less than one year
• 52% are also Israeli citizens
• Half are either independent or not registered with either party
