The commander of Iran's army, Major General Ataollah Salehi, says that Israel's espionage activities are aimed at saving it from collapse.

"The characteristics of the Zionist regime of Israel are terrorism, espionage and blood-sucking," the general told ISNA.

General Salehi stated that Israel is a "usurper regime which has occupied Palestinian lands by force.”

PONCHATOULA, La. (AP) – The huge cross near Ponchatoula's downtown locomotive won't be covered with blazing white bulbs for this year's Christmas Lights Festival.

Instead, a second bar has been added to display banners advertising citywide events.

The cross was highly noticeable last year. But the American Civil Liberties Union said it would sue if the cross was lit up again for the festival that opens Friday.

Mayor Bob Zabbia said city officials don't agree with the ACLU but realized that they probably would not win, and lawsuits are costly. And, said Zabbia, "The law is the law. It doesn't make sense to fight something you're not going to win."

Kazi Nurur Rahman, from east London, was associated with the same terrorist group that is accused of the attack in India which killed almost 200 people.

He was arrested in a sting operation as he tried to buy three Uzi submachine guns and 3,000 rounds of ammunition.

He had talked of buying up to five weapons, hand grenades and as many bullets as possible along with Russian-made rocket-propelled grenades and SAM-7 surface-to-air missiles.

When police raided Rahman's home they found a scanner which enabled him to listen in to police radios along with information on guerrilla warfare.

One senior officer told the Daily Telegraph: "This was definitely part of a larger order and the fact that he tried to buy three submachine guns means you only have to do the maths to know he was not the only one involved."

Police also accept that, had he succeeded in buying the weapons, it would have been difficult to stop a massacre on a similar scale to India.

Rahman, 31, was an associate of Omar Khyam, the leader of a gang plotting to blow up Bluewater shopping centre or the Ministry of Sound nightclub with a fertiliser bomb.

Khyam trained with Lashkar-e-Taiba (Let) the Kashmiri separatist group accused of the Mumbai (formerly Bombay) massacre, before he turned to al-Qaeda.

Police were first told about Rahman by an American informant who spoke of a man he knew as Abdul Haleem who ran a terrorist gang in east London and travelled to Pakistan in the aftermath of September 11.

MI5 eventually identified the man as Rahman, 31, a plumber from east London with a history of violence.  

He pleaded guilty to offences under the Terrorism Act 2000 and was sentenced to nine years in prison in May 2006.

Afghanistan — Canada’s biggest all-time aid recipient and treated along with Haiti as a special case outside the “development partner” program — also sided with Iran.

While backing Canada at the UN is not among Ottawa’s criteria for picking aid recipients, CIDA says one of its goals in dispensing aid is to help “developing countries . . . promote democracy and human rights.”

In descending order of CIDA funding last year, the 13 agency “partners” that voted with Iran to throw out the Canadian-led censure were Bangladesh, Indonesia, Mali, Senegal, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Pakistan, Zambia, Malawi, Bolivia, Cambodia and Nicaragua.

Among non-partner recipients of Canadian aid that voted with Iran was South Africa, which CIDA’s planning report for this year and next says Canada will help to combat HIV/AIDS and build public institutions.

“For too long, supposedly friendly countries in the Third World — many of whom rely on the generosity of Canada and other Western democracies — have used their UN votes to undermine vital international human rights initiatives, without our diplomats ever holding them to account,”said Hillel Neuer, Montreal-born head of UN Watch, a human-rights monitoring group in Geneva. “Effective Canadian multilateral diplomacy is impossible if Ottawa won’t push the right buttons in its bilateral relationships.”

COTABATO CITY, Philippines—Unidentified men planted another powerful improvised explosive device (IED) in front of a church in Kabacan, North Cotabato on Saturday, police authorities said.

Chief Insp. Franklin Anito, Kabacan police chief, said the bomb was found in front of the Iglesia ni Cristo church at 5:30 a.m. by passersby, who quickly alerted the police.

It was the second time that the INC church was targeted for bombing and the second church in Kabacan subjected to bomb attack in three days.

“Bomb experts defused the explosive just in time,” Anito said.

It would also entrench taxpayer funding of abortion. Moreover, it would compel Catholic health-care facilities to provide the heinous procedure. In short, it constitutes a fundamental assault on basic Catholic doctrine.

Mr. Obama is a radical on abortion. He is vehemently pro-choice, even opposing the ban on partial-birth abortion. While in the Illinois state legislature, Mr. Obama voted against legislation protecting babies born in botched abortions.

DHAKA:Police in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka arrested eight Islamists after they attacked a sculpture depicting a group of white storks, in a continuing campaign against statues and artwork they say are forbidden by Islam.

“We detained eight members of a fanatic Islamist group for damaging the sculptures at Dhaka’s Motijheel commercial area around midnight on Saturday,”police officer Fazlul Haq said yesterday.

Witnesses said nearly 400 Ulama Anjumane Al-Baiyanat activists gathered around the sculptures with shovels and hammers, chanting slogans calling for the demolition of all stoneworks, which some hardline Islamists consider to be idols. First they tried to pull down the 13m sculptures by putting ropes around the necks of the storks.

Unable to do this, the group attacked the base with hammers and other tools. Various Islamist groups, including the Al-Baiyanat, have been vandalizing sculptures in Bangladesh in recent months.

They said that just one look at the bodies of the dead hostages as well as terrorists showed it was a battle of attrition that was fought over three days at the Oberoi and the Taj hotels in Mumbai.

Doctors working in a hospital where all the bodies, including that of the terrorists, were taken said they had not seen anything like this in their lives.

"Bombay has a long history of terror. I have seen bodies of riot victims, gang war and previous terror attacks like bomb blasts. But this was entirely different. It was shocking and disturbing," a doctor said.

Asked what was different about the victims of the incident, another doctor said: "It was very strange. I have seen so many dead bodies in my life, and was yet traumatised. A bomb blast victim's body might have been torn apart and could be a very disturbing sight. But the bodies of the victims in this attack bore such signs about the kind of violence of urban warfare that I am still unable to put my thoughts to words," he said.

Asked specifically if he was talking of torture marks, he said: "It was apparent that most of the dead were tortured. What shocked me were the telltale signs showing clearly how the hostages were executed in cold blood," one doctor said.

The other doctor, who had also conducted the post-mortem of the victims, said: "Of all the bodies, the Israeli victims bore the maximum torture marks. It was clear that they were killed on the 26th itself. It was obvious that they were tied up and tortured before they were killed. It was so bad that I do not want to go over the details even in my head again," he said.

Kashmiri separatists Lashkar-e-Taiba, ‘The Army of the Righteous’, which has strong links to Al Qaeda, is accused of previous terrorist outrages in India.

And intercepted telephone and radio communications before and during the latest attacks apparently suggest a link.

Indian officials say at least one of the gunmen captured after the attacks is part of a Lashkar network.

But earlier this year another group, the Indian Mujahideen, which has links to Lashkar-e-Taiba, sent an email to Indian police warning it was planning an attack in Mumbai.

The message read: ‘We are keeping a close eye on you and just waiting for the right time to execute your bloodshed…Let the Indian Mujahideen warn all the people of Mumbai…You are already on our hit list and this time very, very seriously.’

The only terrorist captured alive after the Mumbai massacre has given police the first full account of the extraordinary events that led to it – revealing he was ordered to ‘kill until the last breath’.

Azam Amir Kasab, 21, from Pakistan, said the attacks were meticulously planned six months ago and were intended to kill 5,000 people.

He revealed that the ten terrorists, who were highly trained in marine assault and crept into the city by boat, had planned to blow up the Taj Mahal Palace hotel after first executing British and American tourists and then taking hostages.

And Kasab described how he and an accomplice sprayed machine-gun fire around a busy railway station, killing dozens of people, before intending to move to the exclusive district of Malabar Hill, where they planned to ‘take VIPs hostage’.

Kasab and the nine other terrorists, who communicated using BlackBerry mobiles, began their journey to Mumbai on November 21.

Initially unarmed, they left an isolated beach near Karachi in a small boat, before being picked up the following day by a larger vessel.

Kasab told police that the group then hijacked a fishing trawler bearing the name Kuber near the maritime boundary between Pakistan and India.

Four of its crew are missing while the fifth has been found dead, apparently beheaded. Its owner and his brother are being questioned by police.

On November 23, after reaching Porbandar in the Indian state of Gujarat, 310 nautical miles from Mumbai, the insurgents were intercepted by two coastguard officers. The group hoisted a white flag and allowed the two men to board their boat.

According to Kasab, one of the militants then attacked one of the officers, slitting his throat and throwing him overboard. The other man was forced to help the group reach their destination before being executed as the vessel drew near to Mumbai.

The strike hit a village near Miran Shah, in North Waziristan, the military source and Muhammad Nasim, a North Waziristan political official, said.

The military source asked not to be identified because he is not authorized to speak to the media.

KABUL, Afghanistan — Gunbattles and airstrikes by NATO and Afghan troops killed 53 militants in Afghanistan, including a wanted Taliban commander who tried to hide from soldiers under a woman's burqa, officials said Saturday.

The U.S. forces targeting the commander surrounded a house Friday in Ghazni province and ordered everyone inside to leave, a military statement said.

Six women and 12 children left the building, but while soldiers were questioning the women they discovered one was actually a man dressed in a burqa, the traditional all-encompassing dress that most Afghan women wear. The man, later identified as the targeted commander Haji Yakub, tried to attack the soldiers and was killed, the military said.

Yakub allegedly directed roadside bomb and suicide attacks against Afghanistan's government and coalition forces in Ghazni, according to the statement. Three other militants were killed in the operation, it said.

Pro-life groups — longtime opponents of Planned Parenthood — have denounced the voucher program, saying it will lead to more abortions in the state.

"It's very typical of Planned Parenthood to pervert the meaning of Christmas, which is a time of life and selflessness and love and giving," said Katie Walker, a spokeswomen with the American Life League, a Catholic pro-life activist group.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) – Iran's Supreme Court upheld the stoning death sentence against woman convicted of adultery in the southern city of Shiraz, an independent newspaper reported Saturday.

The daily Etemad Melli, or National Confidence, reported that the court also upheld another death sentence, this one by hanging, against the woman who also was convicted of killing her husband with the help of a male accomplice.

The man was sentenced to 15 years in prison after he was convicted of being an accomplice in a murder. He also was sentenced to 100 lashes for adultery, but was not given the death penalty because he was married. The newspaper only identified the two by their first names.

Judiciary officials were not immediately available for comment. It was not known when the slaying took place or when the two were convicted. While the ruling is final, Iran's judiciary chief or the country's supreme leader are authorized to stop death sentences from being carried out.
