Americans, while far more sympathetic to Israel than the Palestinians, are closely divided over whether the Jewish state should be taking military action against militants in the Gaza Strip.

Forty-four percent (44%) say Israel should have taken military action against the Palestinians, but 41% say it should have tried to find a diplomatic solution to the problems there, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Fifteen percent (15%) are undecided.

Fifty-five percent (55%) of adults, however, believe the Palestinians are to blame for the current situation in Gaza, while 13% point the finger at the Israelis. Nearly one-third (32%) aren’t sure.

Men are far more sympathetic to the Israelis than women. Fifty-six percent (56%) of men support Israel’s military action, compared to 34% of women. Whites narrowly give the edge to military action, but African-Americans by three-to-one say diplomacy was the better way to go.

Sixty-two percent (62%) of Republicans back Israel’s decision to take military action against the Palestinians, but only half as many Democrats (31%) agree. A majority of Democrats (55%) say Israel should have tried to find a diplomatic solution first, a view shared by just 27% of Republicans.

While 75% of Republicans say Israel is an ally of the United States, just 55% of Democrats agree. Seven percent (7%) of Democrats say Israel is an enemy of America, but only one percent (1%) of Republicans say the same. For 21% of Republicans, Israel is somewhere in between, and 28% of Democrats agree.

Gaza – The head of Hamas' government in the Gaza Strip, Ismail Haniya, called for an unconditional end to the five-day old Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip as the first step toward ending the violence.

Haniya, who gave a speech while in hiding that was broadcast by the pro-Hamas al-Aqsa television, also demanded and end to the blockade of Gaza, the reopening of crossings, and talks on Palestinian reconciliation.

Haniya and his Hamas lieutenants have gone underground over fears of being being targeted by Israeli warplanes.

Haniya praised the strength of Palestinians for standing up to the 'crazy Israeli war machines'and denied that Hamas intends to isolate Gaza from the rest of the occupied Palestinian territories.

Two protesters demonstrating against the BBC’s coverage of the Israeli bombing of Gaza glued themselves to entrance barriers at BBC Wales in Cardiff yesterday.

Bob Cottrell and Dee Murphy, of the Swansea-Palestine link group, were released after causing disruption in the foyer for almost three hours.

Another member of the group, Fiona Williams, claimed the BBC’s coverage of the bombing was pro-Israeli.

She said: “Hamas is referred to as a militant organisation, rather than the democratically-elected government, having been elected by a huge majority.

“The settlements in the West Bank should be referred to as illegal, the Israeli Defence Force as the Israeli Army, and the separation barrier as the apartheid wall.”

News Corp.’s Fox NewsChannel led the cable news networks in average viewership during 2008, according to Nielsen Media Research released Tuesday.

Fox News captured a daily average of 1.06 million viewers, compared to CNN, which averaged 695,000 viewers, according to Nielsen data supplied by the network. MSNBC averaged 468,000 viewers.

Nielsen ended its year on Dec. 28, which is the last full week of 2008.

This is the seventh consecutive year Fox News has topped bitter rival CNN, owned by Atlanta-based Turner Broadcasting System, the network said.

The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) today welcomed an apology from a Long John Silver's restaurant in that state that distributed religious literature in children's meals.

In November, a Muslim family visited the Long John Silver's at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn., and ordered a children's meal for their three-year-old son. The Muslim parents noticed that the toy that came with the meal was a small notepad with the phrase "Build with Jesus" written at the top along with a quote from the Bible.

Following intervention by CAIR-MN, the restaurant investigated the matter and found that the "families' request was not handled in a manner consistent with company policy."

In a letter to CAIR-MN, the Long John Silver's franchisee owner Steve Oborn wrote: "In an attempt to support and respect a multitude of diverse needs and preferences, it is our policy to have an optional toy(s) available per request. Recognizing the needs of younger children, those with allergies, or disabilities, varying religious affiliation, or their parents that prefer treats containing no sugar, are amongst those sensitivities we hope to always accommodate and respectively respond to… Please extend our sincere apologies to this family."

TEHRAN, Iran: Iran's state-run newspaper says a militant group has attacked the office of Saudi Arabia's state-owned airline in Tehran over a Saudi-backed peace initiative with Israel.

Iran newspaper says the group — identified as Ikhwan al-Radwan, or Brothers of Heaven in Arabic — attacked the Saudi Arabian Airlines office with several Molotov cocktails Wednesday, causing minor damage to the building.

Saturday's newspaper report quotes a statement by the group saying the reason for the attack was Saudi Arabia's support for an Arab peace initiative.

The initiative offers Israel normal relations with all Arab countries if it withdraws from lands occupied in 1967 Arab-Israeli war and allows the creation of a Palestinian state with a capital in Jerusalem.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – A Muslim inmate in a Connecticut prison has filed a federal lawsuit, alleging he has been denied meals that conform to his religious standards.

Ricardo Collins says officials are denying his right to freedom of religion by failing to provide meat that is "halal," slaughtered in accordance with Islamic law.

The 27-year-old inmate, who is being held at Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center, filed his lawsuit in U.S. District Court on Dec. 23.

Collins recently won an appellate court decision granting him a new trial on a murder charge. He had been convicted in Superior Court of killing a man in Bridgeport in 2002.

The IAF continued its assault on Gaza terrorist targets on Wednesday afternoon, bombing a Gaza City mosque and destroying a large number of rockets hidden inside.

Channel 10 reported that the IAF had received high-level orders to hit the mosque after Hamas terror operatives had run there with several rockets and Grad-type missiles.

On Wednesday morning, the IAF struck targets in the northern Gaza Strip. Most of the attacks were reportedly directed against rocket launchers that were being used in the intense bombardment of southern Israel during the day, while one strike was said to target a senior member of the Islamic Jihad.

The Islamic Jihad commander was reportedly killed in the airstrike, in the southern Gaza town of Khan Yunis.

Saudi Arabia's foreign minister on Wednesday blamed Palestinian divisions for Israel's onslaught on Gaza, a reflection of U.S.-allied Arab governments' anger at the Hamas militant group.

Pro-U.S. Arab countries — Egypt, in particular — have come under heavy criticism in widespread street protests, as well as from Iran, Hamas, the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, for allegedly not doing enough to stop Israel or help Gazans. Officials and pro-government media in Egypt and Saudi Arabia have responded by blaming Hamas for provoking Israel and accusing the militant group of being a proxy promoting the power of regional rival Iran.

Gaza terrorists continued to pound southern Israel Wednesday on the fifth day of IDF Operation Cast Lead, firing some 60 rockets at civilian areas and lightly wounding four people in attacks on Ashkelon and Ashdod.

Beersheba entered its second day on the front lines earlier Wednesday as Hamas stepped up Grad-type rocket attacks on the city, the largest in the South. One of the rockets went through the roof of an empty school and fell inside a classroom, a day after a similar rocket caused extensive damage to a kindergarten. A number of people were treated for shock following the morning barrage.

Also Wednesday, Channel 2 reported that Grad-type rockets had struck Route 6 at an unspecified location. No casualties were reported in that attack.

Tehran, 31 Dec. (AKI) – A branch of the Italian clothing retailer Benetton was set on fire in Iran amid angry protests against the Israeli raids in the Gaza Strip, media reports said on Wednesday.

According to the conservative Iranian daily, Jomhuri Eslami, the shop in Dowlat Street, in the north of the capital Tehran, had been attacked by protesters on Tuesday.

Benetton is said to be "linked with the Zionist network," a government newspaper said.

Several Benetton stores have opened in the past two years in Iran, where global brands have largely been absent since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

Last year a group of prominent MPs protested against Benetton's presence in Iran, alleging that it was owned by a "Zionist millionaire" and that its fashions were a bad influence on female consumers.
