(IsraelNN.com) -In the latest in a recent series of increased American assistance efforts for Arab and Muslim states, U.S. President Barack Obama has allocated an additional $150 million to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

The regimes leading Egypt, the Palestinian Authority, the United Arab Emirates and even Saudi Arabia have all benefited from recent American policy shifts.

Jordan’s Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Suhair Al-Ali, was quoted by The Jordan Times as explaining that the kingdom receives $363 million annually from the United States in economic assistance. The allocations signed into law by Obama this week mean that Jordan will receive a total of $513 million from the U.S. in 2009. The minister told the Jordanian newspaper that the additional American aid was the result of ongoing efforts by Jordan’s King Abdullah II, as well as Obama’s “recognition of the important role Jordan plays in the region.”

Egypt received $310 million in supplemental appropriations from the U.S. House of Representatives, currently controlled by Obama’s Democratic party. At the same time, 2009 State Department funding for the promotion of democratic initiatives in Egypt was cut from $50 million to $20 million. In addition, the U.S. has agreed not to give any of the pro-democracy funds to organizations that are not approved by the Mubarak regime. In the year 2007, Egypt received a total of $2.4 billion.

On another front, in March of this year, it was reported that the Obama administration planned to dramatically increase funding to the Palestinian Authority for security training, which is conducted by Jordanian police under the supervision of U.S. General Keith Dayton. The U.S. allocated $75 million for the PA police training in 2008, but reports indicated that the Obama administration was planning to pump up to $130 million into the program in 2009. In any event, the U.S. has already pledged $600 million in funds to the Palestinian Authority, with another $300 million for humanitarian aid to the Hamas regime in Gaza.

In Pakistan, the U.S. president proposed $2.8 billion in aid for that nation’s military, alongside civilian aid of $1.5 billion a year for the next five years.The military aid is ostensibly to allow the Pakistanis to more effectively fight jihadist and al-Qaeda terrorism emanating from the Swat Valley and along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

The U.S. co-sponsored a successful U.N. resolution supporting Honduras’s ousted leader Tuesday as Republicans began to speak out against the Obama administration’s condemnation of the overthrow.

Manuel Zelaya, who was arrested and forced into exile Sunday, addressed the U.N. General Assembly after the unanimous vote on the resolution sponsored in part by Bolivia, Mexico, Venezuela and the United States.

“The resolution that the United Nations has just adopted unanimously … expresses the indignation of the people of Honduras and the people worldwide,” said Zelaya, who began his speech by thanking Venezuela and Ecuador.

President Obama, meeting with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe on Monday, said the U.S. would “stand with democracy” in the face of the overthrow.

PRINCETON, NJ – A Gallup Poll finds a statistically significant increase since last year in the percentage of Americans who describe the Democratic Party’s views as being “too liberal,” from 39% to 46%. This is the largest percentage saying so since November 1994, after the party’s losses in that year’s midterm elections.

Most major demographic and attitudinal subgroups show at least a slight uptick since 2008 in perceptions that the Democratic Party is too liberal. The increasing perception of the Democrats as too far left comes as President Obama and the Democrats in Congress have expanded the government’s role in the economy to address the economic problems facing the country. Additionally, the government is working toward major healthcare reform legislation and strengthening environmental regulations.

Notably, there has been no change over the past year in the percentage of Americans who say the Republican Party is “too conservative,” though the 43% who say the party leans too far to the right matches the historical high mark set last year.

As the Iranian authorities warned the opposition on Tuesday that they would tolerate no further protests over the disputed June 12 presidential elections, a report emerged of the hangings of six supporters of defeated candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi.

Speaking after Iran’s top legislative body upheld the election victory of incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, sources in Iran told this reporter in a telephone interview that the hangings took place in the holy city of Mashhad on Monday. There was no independent confirmation of the report.

Underlining the climate of fear among direct and even indirect supporters of Mousavi’s campaign for the election to be annulled, the sources also reported that a prominent cleric gave a speech to opposition protesters in Teheran earlier this week in which he publicly acknowledged that the very act of speaking at the gathering would likely cost him his life.

“Ayatollah Hadi Gafouri said that the Imam [Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini] never wanted [current supreme Leader] Ali Khamenei to succeed him. He even went to say that the Islamic republic died the day the Imam did,” one source said.

NEW YORK (AP)– New York’s City Council has passed a nonbinding resolution asking the Education Department to observe two important Muslim holidays. But Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the city is so diverse schools can’t observe every holiday.

The city has the nation’s largest school system. A 2008 study by Columbia University’s Teachers College estimates at least 10 percent of its 1.1 million students are Muslim.

The resolution was passed Tuesday. It asks the Bloomberg administration to observe the holidays in schools and for the state to require it by amending education law.

The holidays are Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha. Eid al-Adha celebrates the willingness of Ibrahim — known as Abraham to Christians and Jews — to sacrifice his son. It is the most important Islamic holiday.

WASHINGTON — The Minnesota Supreme Court cleared the way for Democrat Al Franken to become Minnesota’s new U.S. senator, ending a festering eight-month election dispute and giving the Democrats a 60-seat voting majority in the Senate.

The court on Tuesday unanimously upheld Mr. Franken’s margin of 312 votes out of 2.9 million cast in November’s election, giving him the seat that had been held for one term by Republican Norm Coleman. Mr. Coleman conceded at a news conference at his home two hours later, saying he would heed the court’s finding.

The Democrats’ enhanced majority could enable them to bypass Republican filibusters, easing the passage of sweeping health-care and climate-change bills. But that dominance is tenuous, given that the party is showing fractures over those and other issues.

Qaeda seeks revenge against France over burqa- Reuters

Al Qaeda’s north African wing threatened revenge against France for launching a “war” against Muslim women who wear full burqas that cover them from head to toe, according to a Web statement posted in the group’s name.

French legislators expressed concern this month that more and more Muslim women were wearing a burqa or a niqab which cloaks the entire body, sometimes leaving a gap for the eyes.

President Nicolas Sarkozy said the garments were not welcome in France because they are a symbol of the subjugation of women.

It said the French were committing these injustices “at a time when their denuded women … flock to our land and occupy our beaches and streets, outrageously defying the feelings of Muslims”.It said France’s campaign against the burqa was tantamount to “religious terrorism” and was an incitement to a hatred that would only grow.

“This is why we call upon all Muslims to respond to this hatred by another that is more ravaging, we call upon them to confront this French obstinacy,” the statement said.

TEL AVIV – Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah organization recently staged a televised play in which the group bragged it is responsible for more terrorism against Israelis than the rival Islamist Hamas organization.

The staged drama, broadcast on official PA television June 17, was attended by top Fatah leaders, including officials who routinely coordinate security with the U.S. and engage in negotiations with Israel.

The performance included a segment in which a classroom of Fatah and Hamas students and teachers debated each other on who was responsible for more “resistance” against Israel, with Fatah ultimately prevailing while criticizing Hamas for failing to launch enough attacks against the Jewish state in recent years.

Americans have mixed feelings about the historic climate change bill that passed the House on Friday, but 42% say it will hurt the U.S. economy.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that just 19% believe the climate change bill passed by the House on Friday will help the economy. Fifteen percent (15%) say it will have no impact, and 24% are not sure.

A majority of both Republicans (56%) and adults not affiliated with either major political party (52%) think the bill will hurt the economy. Among Democrats, however, 30% say it will help the economy, 23% that it will hurt and 21% say it will have no impact.

The divide on the question between populist or Mainstream America and the Political Class is a wide one. Fifty percent (50%) of Mainstream Americans say the climate control measure will hurt the economy, but two-thirds of the Political Class (67%) say it will help.

As for the bill itself, 37% of all Americans at least somewhat favor it, while 41% are at least somewhat opposed to it. Twenty-two percent (22%) are not sure what to make of it.

KABUL (AP) – Afghan officials say a suicide bomber wearing a burqa entered the country from Pakistan today and detonated his explosives in a room where women are searched at the border crossing.

A police officer and a 12-year-old girl were killed in the attack.

A police force today announced plans to issue all Muslims it detains in cells with a compass – so they can face towards Mecca when praying.

Norfolk Police has decided on the move to ensure arrested Muslims face towards the holy site and has even painted the ceiling of some cells to point them in the right direction.

Inspector Colin William, custody Insp for King’s Lynn, said the force had a responsibility to meet the religious needs of everyone it takes into custody.

He said: ‘We have responsibilities to ensure that everyone detained has their specific needs met whether they are unable to read, visually impaired or a vulnerable young person.

‘Each person taken into custody is asked if they have any particular religious or dietary requirements.

‘We will also have the compasses available to Muslims so they they may know the direction of Mecca.

The announcement comes after a successful trial at Bethel Street police station in Norwich, where compasses were painted on the ceilings of cells. The custody suite at King’s Lynn station is next in line to be redecorated.

A bomb blast killed at least 9 militants in Paktika province while rigging explosive devices, an official said.

The explosion occurred Monday inside a house in Yousuf Khail district, south of the provincial capital, Sharan. “It was a Taliban compound where they were making bombs. Suddenly, the explosives went off and killed nine of them,”a spokesman for the provincial government, Hamidullah Zwakh said.

Three of the militants were foreign nationals, the spokesman further said without naming a specific country.

Getting a divorce and custody of one’s children is very difficult in Bahrain, even in cases where a husband sexually attacks his wife. The issue was exposed to the public last year, when an Arab woman married to a Bahraini was granted a divorce by the courts after she lost part of her breast during a violent sexual encounter with her spouse.

A medical report submitted during the case citing the need for corrective surgery was valid enough evidence for the judge to call off the marriage. Though such cases are rarely highlighted in the media here, the plight of this woman made top headlines in many regional newspapers.

Similar to almost all Arab and Islamic countries, Bahrain offers women no protection from their sexually abusive husbands. Only in cases of physical injury will the courts grant a divorce. For those who bear no physical marks, victims of sexual abuse feel helpless, as marital rape isn’t penalized in this part of the world.

Many of the country’s scholars maintain the opposite stance when it comes to spousal rape. Scholar and judge at the Shariah courts, Shaikh Mohsin Al Asfoor says men have the right to demand sexual relations with their wives as the word “rape” doesn’t exist between couples. He says that Shariah courts don’t penalize men for forcing their wives to have sex with them, but press charges of abuse – not rape – only when physical injuries occur.

“Shariah courts have declined many cases filed by women against their husbands because they forced them to have sex, especially females who signed the marriage contracts but were waiting to be wedded, because Islamic regulations are clear in the right of men to have sex with their wives whenever they wish,” he explains..

MOGADISHU, June 30 (Reuters) -Somalia’s Islamist rebels threatened on Tuesday to attack Ethiopia after repeated witness reports that Ethiopian troops were back in the chaotic Horn of Africa country they withdrew from in January.

Ethiopian troops invaded Somalia in 2006 to oust an Islamist movement from the capital in which new President Sheik Sharif Ahmed played a role. That sparked an Islamist insurgency which is still raging despite their withdrawal.

“I’m telling the people that it’s time we attacked Ethiopia, who are our Christian neighbours,” Sheikh Abdiqani Mohamed Yusuf said on a radio station controlled by the al Shabaab rebels in the southern port of Kismayu.

“We have to invade their country, like they did to our country. This is our best chance,” he said. “The people should be ready to take part in jihad.”

Gaza/Tel Aviv – Foreign activists on board an aid ship Tuesday ignored orders by the Israeli Navy to turn around, sparking a stand-off some 40 kilometres off the Gaza coast.

The ship of the international, pro-Palestinian Free Gaza movement and carrying a symbolic amount of medical supplies, toys, and reconstruction kits, departed from Larnaca Port in Cyprus early Monday.

But when it arrived off the shores of Gaza before dawn Tuesday, it was surrounded by Israeli gunboats, which ordered it to turn around.

Free Gaza charged in a press release that the Israel Navy threatened to open fire and began blocking its GPS, radar and navigation systems when the ship, dubbed The Spirit of Humanity, refused the orders.

The crew on board numbers 21 activists from 11 different countries, including Irish Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Maguire, 65, a fierce pro-Palestinian campaigner, and former US Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, 54, the unsuccessful 2008 Green Party presidential candidate.
