We have disabled pinging on this post. | Weasel Zippers(WSJ) — Muslim feminists call it the “penalty box.” It’s the area of a mosque where women, segregated from the men, pray. In Islam, prayer is required five times a day and Muslims often pray in congregation at mosques. During these prayers, women usually are partitioned off in a separate room or behind a curtain, “like naughty children,” one Muslim woman tells me, while men pray in a grand main hall.
One Muslim, Fatima Thompson, describes the penalty box at her mosque in Maryland as an overheated, dark back room. Another Muslim woman, Asra Nomani, tells me that at a major Washington D.C. mosque, the female section was in a trailer, where the voice of the imam (the prayer leader) came from a crackling speaker. “It was so humiliating I never went back,” says Ms. Nomani, a former reporter for the Journal.
Now these Muslim feminists have had enough. Hoping to reform Islam by making it more women-friendly, Ms. Thompson — an American convert to Islam — has organized several “pray-ins” at mosques in the D.C. area. These include the Islamic Center of Washington and the Dar Al-Hijra Islamic Center in Falls Church, Va., a mosque attended by several of the 9/11 hijackers and the Fort Hood mass killer Maj. Nidal Hasan. Ms. Thompson’s next pray-in target is a mosque in Washington.
Like the civil rights activists of the 1960s, whose “sit-ins” were part of a movement that ended racial segregation, Ms. Thompson hopes her peaceful pray-ins will help initiate a movement that ends overt sexism in Islam, despite the conventional wisdom that regards Islam and feminism as anathema. Her efforts come at a time when, as of a 2001 study, 66% of American mosques segregate men from women during prayer, an increase of 14% from 1994.
During the pray-ins, Ms. Nomani, Ms. Thompson, and several other women walk through the front door of the mosque — many require women to enter through a side or back door — and into the main hall. They then seat themselves behind the rows of men to pray.
The Muslim men get rattled. Ms. Nomani remembers one bearded man who “furrow[ed] his brows and scream[ed] . . . ‘Sisters go over there!’” — indicating the dreaded penalty box. Ms. Nomani humorously refers to him as the mosque’s “bouncer.” At one pray-in, the women didn’t budge when they were asked to move, and the service began with them praying with the men.

I want to say something positive, but I can’t. Anyone who converts to Islam and faces problems such as this, I can’t feel sorry for them at all. Also “Muslim Feminist” is the biggest oxymoron ever.

While I am somewhat sympathetic to the plight of Muslim women, let’s just say, I won’t be impressed until they start speaking out against the murder of apostates, adulterers, and gays.

We, for our part, should continue to expose Islam because those in it (born or converts) are often unaware of the full extent of what its Sharia will mean to them here (far too much of this lie about ‘cultural practices’ from the ‘old/home country’: female genital mutilation, polygamy, pedophilia, wife-beating, Jihad, Jew and Christian hatred, death for apostates/homosexuals/adulterers — that’s all in Islam’s ‘holy’ texts, Koran and Hadith and it’s all fully approved of, so let’s not let anyone continue either in blindness or in taqiyya).

Women in mosques – No curtains, no walls, no partitions!

Question: We have a big controversy going on in our Masjid. Some brothers want to build a wall in the Musalla to separate men from women. Is it required in Islam? What are the basic rules of Shari’ah in this matter?
Answer: Men and women both are allowed to pray in the mosque in the same Jama’ah. When men and women are together in the Masjid then we should have first men’s lines behind the Imam, then children and then women. This is the way Muslims used to pray behind the Prophet – peace be upon him. He did not make or ask his companions to have a curtain or wall between the lines of men and women. (See Al-Sindi’s Commentary on Sunan al-Nasa’I, p. 798)
According to the Shari’ah it is not required to have a partition, neither of temporary nor of permanent nature, between men and women in the Masjid.
It is perfectly Islamic to hold meetings of men and women inside the Masjid, whether for prayers or for any other Islamic purpose, without separating them with a curtain, partition or wall. It is, however, very important that Muslim women come to public gatherings wearing proper Islamic dress. It is haram for a Muslim woman to attend a public gathering without a full Islamic dress. She must cover her hair and neck with a scarf which should also go over her bosom. Her dress should be modest and loose enough in order not to reveal the shape of her body
As an American woman, convert to Islam, this in my opinion is ridiculous. There is very good reason why women are separated from men in the mosque. It is a place where you go to worship by praying. In Islam, you bend over to pray, and being in the presence of women can be distracting for men and vice versa. Not to say that women should not be provided a nice area to pray, however many mosques are just as crowded and hot for men as they are for women. Any religious woman with a concern for decency and modesty should be able to understand this, however most so-called christians here in America see no problem or hypocrisy in walking around half naked although it says in the Bible also to be modest. For the ignorant one insulting Muhammed (PBU) obviously you have not studied very much. Many non-Muslims even revere Muhammed as a most honorable man having the most love and respect for women and teaching that to all Muslims. It is a shame when Muslims and non-muslims try to turn Islam into something it is not.
