WASHINGTON (AP) — The federal government sued a suburban Chicago school district Monday for denying a Muslim middle school teacher unpaid leave to make a pilgrimage to Mecca that is a central part of her religion.
In a civil rights case, the department said the school district in Berkeley, Ill., denied the request of Safoorah Khan on grounds that her requested leave was unrelated to her professional duties and was not set forth in the contract between the school district and the teachers union. In doing so the school district violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by failing to reasonably accommodate her religious practices, the government said.
Khan wanted to perform the Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia which every adult Muslim is supposed to make at least once in a lifetime if they are physically and financially able to. Millions go each year.
Khan started as a middle school teacher for Berkeley School District 87 — about 15 miles west of Chicago — in 2007. In 2008, she asked for almost three weeks of unpaid leave to perform the Hajj. After the district twice denied her request, Khan wrote the board that “based on her religious beliefs, she could not justify delaying performing hajj,” and resigned shortly thereafter, according to the lawsuit filed in federal court in Chicago.
Berkeley School District compelled Khan to choose between her job and her religious beliefs, the lawsuit said.

This teacher made a conscious decision to work for this school district. No one said she has to work there. She quit. Decisions have consequences.
I’m fairly sure that the school district will prevail. This, incident however will have legs. I’m sure that many Muslims will be denied employment as a result of this. Why? Well if you don’t hire them, there are no such management problems such as this. Just another day in the overreaching of Islam.

How many professed Christians don’t celebrate the “Twelve Days of Christmas” and why aren’t they taking all 12 days off with pay based on DOJ’s recent hajj ruling?
Why would anyone hire a muslim knowing the possibility of all the lawsuits down the road? Upon hiring, advised they can’t wear their headgear, but they’re gonna wear it anyway and then sue when they’re reprimanded. Advised that there are set times for breaks and lunch, the muslim is going to sue when he isn’t given time to pray 5 times a day. Ramidan comes along and he’s gonna sue because all these dirty infidels are eating and drinking around him, offending his sensibilities. Now it’s ‘I’m gonna sue you unless you give me THREE WEEKS off so I can go on an uber-brainwashing trip to worship a rock’.. and THREE WEEKS is alot of time off for a teacher… they only work 8 months or less anyway (when you add up summers off, plus accumulated weeks off for Christmas – oh, I’m sorry, winter holiday – and Easter – oh wait, that’s spring break; must be politically correct).
I find this just one more way obama has our DOJ sucking up to the Muslim’s to appease both non fathers he had in his life. The timing of the hajj varies widely (just as everything does in the islamic year) because they’re too dumb/lazy to calculate leap months or years to keep their moon schedule in tune with the seasons of the year. QED.
