Immigration and Customs Enforcement has agreed to begin providing medical care that goes well beyond emergency treatment, as a result of a lawsuit filed by the ACLU. The suit alleged that ICE was not treating “immigration detainees with constitutionally adequate levels of medical and mental health care.”
Among the many services which ICE will now provide illegal aliens in their custody are heart surgeries, cancer biopsies, treatment for diabetes, dental care, and treatment for mental depression.
On Thursday, Elizabeth Alexander, former Director of the ACLU National Prison Project and lead attorney in the suit said: “For the first time, ICE has committed to providing all necessary health care to immigration detainees beyond just emergency care. For too long, ICE’s own policies allowed it to provide detainees with nothing beyond a narrow definition of emergency. This settlement is recognition that it is unconstitutional not to provide people in government custody with all necessary health care.”
The legal action was filed in June 2007 by the ACLU and the ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties and stated that detainees at the San Diego Correctional Facility were often subjected to long waits for medical treatment and denied medication for chronic illnesses.

Our voices better be heard loud and clear the next two years regarding all the illegals and all it entails with the congress-critters…this has to halt…soon.
So it’s constitutional to provide free (but it’s not free, it’s taxpayer paid) “nescessary” healthcare for those in government custody who are not citizens from this country and have broken the law? Who decides that its constitutionality and what is necessary or excessive? Although I absolutley despise the ACLU and all that it stands for, they would get nowhere if they did not have judges ruling in their favor. We must remove judges who are pushing their own progressive agenda instead of law…..and we need to change some laws. Is this a federal requirement or can each state decide the level of healthcare they want to provide?

noelegy, my point is that these folks are human too, trying to make a living for themselves the way our parents, grandparents, or great grand-parents once did. just because the system makes it impossibly difficult to become a legal citizen doesn’t mean these people should just be thrown out. our country was built by people who were outcasts, who were ostracized for their beliefs or way of life. to deny others the opportunity to come to this country and work to improve their lives or the lives of their families in unAmerican. and frankly, most of the low-priced consumer goods we all take for granted wouldn’t be at all possible without “illegal” immigrants.

and all you folks who think healthcare in prison in any way resembles comprehensive or even decent care are sadly mistaken. it took years of protracted litigation by a major nonprofit to just ensure these poor folks get some level of care so they don’t die. their medical care is, and will remain, abysmally poor compared to care people (who are lucky enough to afford it) can get on the outside.
First of all, being in the country illegally is NOT considered to be a crime (hard to believe, I know), but a civil violation. When I.C.E. detaines immigrants (mostly the ones without a criminal record), they hold them in private detention centers or county jails. To hold a regular citizen criminal costs around 30 dollars a day and to detain an undocumented immigrant costs around 140 (!) a day. The immigrants don’t recieve any special treatment and get the same treatment, the same food, and the same conditions. Now, all of this funding comes from the taxpayers and the entire package to detain/deport costs the country almost 300 billion a year. A lot of these immigrants do pay taxes and don’t commit crimes. It looks like ICE is really not doing the country a favor by deporting these people without a criminal conviction and taking insane amounts of money from the taxpayers. They should really just focus on the criminals…
