Oops: Obama Rented an Illegal House During Hawaii Vacation…
D’oh!…
President Barack Obama’s two-week stay at his Hawaii Winter White House was illegal under a long-standing Honolulu ban on short-term rentals.
Obama did not break the law by staying at the house, but the property owner who rented his house to the Obamas does not have the permit that would allow a stay of fewer than 30 days.
Glenn Weinberg, the owner of the Kailua estate, told Civil Beat that it was legal for him to rent to the president for a short stay because he kept the home empty for the rest of the 30-day period. However his is a common misconception about Honolulu law.
“I don’t see any non-homeowner certificate that allows them to do short-term rentals,” Mike Friedel of the Honolulu Department of Planning and Permitting’s Code Compliance branch told Civil Beat. “If they’re doing short-term rentals, it’s illegal.”
The so-called Winter White House is not listed in the most recent database of properties allowed for short-term rental use.

This explain one of the reasons, the president extented his vacation days for an extra two days, to meet the 15 days.
Is there anyone here who is really surprised that the rules were “bent” AGAIN for this ego-maniac…The rest of the media will give him and his minions yet another “PASS” and say it was an “honest oops”…

Why is this illegal? I have stayed in vacation rentals on Oahu and Maui and have always enjoyed my time. I was charged the tourist tax which is something like 8%. So the govt will take taxes and then tells you as a homeowner what you can and can’t do with your own house.
I agree…what’s the big deal? It is illegal to rent to someone and then they leave early? stupid. What do you do, hold them down and forceably stop them from leaving? I own a home and I’m suppose to be in it for more than 6 months each year or its not my “primary residence” according to the IRS… so I’m breaking the law if I take a trip around the world one year and still claim my house as my primary residence? again, stupid.
I’m sure the Obamas “wild parties” were less disturbing than my neighbors constantly 24hr barking pitbulls, 27 loud mufflered trucks and 30 family members constantly moving in and out of the house next to me.
