Breaking: Dem Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords Shot By Gunman In Arizona . . . Update: She’s Alive . . . Update: Perp Identified
(NPR) — Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head by a gunman at a public event on Saturday.
There are conflicting reports about whether she was killed.
The Pima County, Ariz., sheriff’s office told member station KJZZ the 40-year-old Democrat was killed. At least nine other people, including members of her staff, were injured.
Giffords, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting a “Congress on Your Corner” event at a Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.
Giffords was talking to a couple when the suspect ran up and fired indiscriminately from about four feet away, Michaels said.
The suspect ran off and was tackled by a bystander. He was taken into custody. Witnesses described him as in his late teens or early 20s.

(Reuters) — Representative Gabrielle Giffords was alive but in surgery at a hospital on Saturday after a shooting that also injured at least nine other people, a hospital spokeswoman said.
An earlier report from National Public Radio said Giffords had died.
“She is currently in surgery. She’s alive,” University Medical Center spokeswoman Darci Slaten told Reuters.
Update: The suspect has been identified by AP as Jared Laughner.

Some prominent liberal bloggers wasted little time before politicizing the horrific and tragic shooting of a congresswoman in Arizona on Saturday.
Almost immediately after the nation learned of the shooting of Arizona Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and several others (including a federal judge), a few prominent liberal web writers sought to blame Sarah Palin and other conservatives for the action.
Linking to a map of U.S. House districts that Sarah Palin’s pac wanted to “target” during the 2010 mid-term elections — which sadly included crosshairs over Rep. Giffords’ district (among others) — DailyKos founder Markos Moulitsas Tweeted, “Mission accomplished, Sarah Palin.”
The liberal blog Firedog Lake also went there.
(Palin has deleted the image from her website, and issued a short statement on the shooting, writing on her Facebook page: “My sincere condolences are offered to the family of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims of today’s tragic shooting in Arizona. On behalf of Todd and my family, we all pray for the victims and their families, and for peace and justice.”
Liberal blogger Matthew Yglesias Tweeted out several other examples of “violent rhetoric,” including Rep. Michele Bachman saying, “I want people in Minnesota armed and dangerous” to block climate change legislation.

It has been reported that Mark Kelly was traveling by private jet and expected to arrive in Tucson at 3:00pm. A family friend, who owns the jet has been quoted as saying “We have a positive outlook. We think she’s going to pull through.”
Gabrielle Giffords married Mark Kelly back in November of 2007. 46 year old, Kelly has flown a total of three shuttle missions for NASA. his first flight in space was as the pilot for STS-108 Endeavour December 5–17, 2001. He flew again as the pilot of STS-121 Discovery July 4-17, 2006. Then went on to serve as commander of STS-124 Discovery May 31 to June 14, 2008. Kelly’s next mission is scheduled for launch on April 1, 2011.

Update: Witness: “Gunman was going for the Congresswoman”
The gunman, wearing a beanie and baggy clothes, approached congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’ meet-and-greet Saturday wanting to speak with her immediately, a witnesses says.
Alex Villec, a 19-year-old volunteer, organized the line of constituents with a young man approached the line outside Safeway.
He said “Can I talk to the congresswoman?”, or something to that effect, Villec said. He told the man to stand at the back of a line to wait for about 20 minutes. He went to the back of the line,” Villec said, “and didn’t seem too interested in what I had to say.”
Minutes later, the man left the back of the line and walked toward Giffords who was with 20 to 25 constituents, employees and volunteers.
“He was intent,” Villec said. “He was intent when he came back — a pretty stone cold glance and glare.”
“I didn’t see his gun, but it was clear who he was going for. He was going for the congresswoman,” Villec said.
“A few staff members were caught in the crossfire . . . . His goal was the congresswoman.”
The shooter walked past Villec and to his left, past tables and toward Gifford. He raised his hand. Villec heard gunshots before ducking behind a pillar and later running across the Safeway parking lot to a bank for safety.
“It was bedlam,” he said. “People were getting down on the ground. They were screaming. I just did what I could to keep myself protected.”
Villec worked on Giffords’ 2008 campaign and interned twice in the past year for her, both in Tucson and in Washington, D.C. The Catalina Foothills High School graduate volunteered Saturday in part to see old friends. He was set to return to Georgetown University on Sunday.
The weapon “sounded like a handgun.” He did not hear the shooter speak while firing; from behind a pillar, Villec heard someone cry, “Get down.” Villec did not see two men tackle the gunman, though spoke with one of the men afterward. That tackler, he said, was next in line to greet Giffords.
“It’s heroic,” Villec said.” I’m at a loss for words to describe the courage it takes to do a thing like that.”

From what I am hearing, the shooter fired randomly. For all we know, he has mental problems and it was a crime of opportunity. He just happened to be there while the event was going on.
Same thing happened in the US after the OKC bombing. I was living in OKC at the time and there were lots of family that called to check in with me that were ready to blame Arabs/Muslims. Turned out to be McVeigh. Homegrown.

I will recommend an excellent book by Jayna Davis called ‘The Third Terrorist’…it is excellent.

Eyewitness account is reporting the shooter was a white male in his 20s. People in the crowd tackled him and held him until police arrived, and he is in custody.

I remember a few years ago when I was flying home, I engaged this young man seated next to me in conversation, even though he looked like a “fringe character”. As he told me, his father had abandoned his mother, himself, and his sibling(s). He was “living in a commune” (get it? communism) and he was a radical leftist. He lived in either New Mexico or Arizona, I can’t recall right now. But he was a political RADICAL by his own admission.

My original comment was not very clear. The guy Sheppie was interviewing talked about it being an automatic weapon. I heard around 18 shots were heard/counted as being fired. A double stack clip holds that many rounds in some handguns.
Full auto would mean a Glock 19, UZI, AK, M16, etc. All those weapons are legal, but you need to be specially licensed.
Like I said, this is going to get totally out of control. The spinmeisters, from ALL news orgs., are going to have an orgy over this to the detriment of the country.

This country is about having the ability to express one’s opinion without the fear of suffering violent reprisals. I am from the Tucson area and live in Congresswoman, Gabrielle Giffords’ district. I worked like a dog for her elections when she was in the Arizona House, surrounded by rightwing nutcases. When Arizona re-districted in 2002, a seat opened up and she was right smack in the middle of it. So was I because I live in Oro Valley, Arizona, which is at the heart of that – then – new CD. I was one of several people to talk her into running and pledging complete loyalty and pledging to raise as much money as possible for her.
She ended up running for the first time against a fellow AZ House member, Randy Graf who was a rightwing whacko who advocated guns in bars and was the “Russell Pearce before Russell Pearce” vis-a-vis border issues. With a LOT of hard work and plenty of money, Gabby won. Easier than thought, too. I never like to throw money in people’s faces, but i have given Gabrielle Giffords THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of dollars in both good times and bad times for me financially.
Fast forward to this election season. A weirdo asshole named Jesse Kelly who advocated ELIMINATING Social Security and was a tea bagger favorite got the GOP nom to run against her. I am gay and had been married and my spouse left me January 15, 2010. I shot myself in the mouth in a serious suicide attempt, because of that. Barely surviving, I spent two months in the hospital and still have some paralysis. I did receive a severance from my employer, as i had been laid off in December, 2009. That may have been part of the reason my spouse left me.
Anyway, after months of physical and mental rehab, I got back into the political scene and started working for Gabby once again. I raised over $100,000 for her and maxed her out myself out of my severance, even though i still don’t have work and could not qualify for state aid because of my severance.
She wins her re-election and told me she was still a supporter of Speaker Pelosi at her victory party. We talked about how Nancy Pelosi was a successful woman and accomplished oh so much in just four years as Speaker.

Just read some of this, not all. Don’t have the time. But I do want to point out that many of us have been saying that once things reach ‘the tipping point’, there would be assassinations and it would be from the Left claiming it came from the Right.
Perhaps I can give someone the benefit of my experience. Having been through the anti-war riots in 1970 when Nixon invaded Cambodia and the kids in colleges all around the country went nuts, I learned three very, very important lessons.
First, never believe any rumor. Four students were shot and killed at Kent State that day. The rumor mill had it at 7 students.
Second, we all learned that our “beloved” gooberment was willing to throw all, and I mean ALL, its resources at the students and the anti-war movement. (The stories I could tell.)
Third, and most importantly, there was some guy at my school who was on the podium 24/7 demanding that the students riot and destroy everything in their way. At my school, all we saw was some tear gas and a lot of noise, though. No violence but this guy was relentless.
Well, I was pretty well connected in those days so I knew a LOT of stuff most people didn’t know. Turns out, 6 months later, we found out that this guy worked for the U.S. Government as an agent provocateur whose sole job was to whip up the crowd so that the Goobers could identify who were the ones behind the riots. The buy, whose name was Greg ‘Something’ had claimed he was a student at my school but as it turned out, he never had attended and was nowhere to be found after things calmed down.
All of which leads ME to think that this was staged by Ocaca’s agents.
Here we have a dupe who killed an anti-Obama legislator in a border state at a critical time during Ocaca’s implementation of his dictatorship, creating chaos and confusion, anger and fear. It’s the perfect setup. And the Left is so fucking stupid and emotional, ignorant and just itching for a fight, the Ocaca agents likely figure they have nothing to lose and everything to gain since the MSM will cover this up completely and also blame it on the Right.
Notice, they’ve started the blame game even before this poor woman even died.
Nope. No matter what anyone says, and based on my many years experience with our corrupt gooberment, I personally am convinced at this point that it’s a setup from start to finish. Find a guy who’s nuts. Convince him to shoot. Make it possible to do it. Get him there one way or another and their plan is complete.
Just so you nutty asses on the Left start with the accusations that I’m the one crazy, I have over 40 years experience with this kind of things and I know a LOT of people on BOTH sides of these situations, both in country and overseas. Speaking of which, I was just listing to myself all the numbers we carry with us today and asking myself why the government wants ever more intrusive tracking devices in our lives. The answer is obvious to any moron. Control.
Think about it. We have a social security number, telephone number, drivers license, auto license plate numbers, TollTag numbers that can track our daily movements with ease, file numbers of all kinds, court case numbers, invoice numbers, credit/debit card numbers, buying club numbers like Costco and Sam’s Club, birth date numbers, IP numbers, Facebook and other social network ID numbers, email addresses and numbers, if you have had an implant, the serial numbers are recorded INSIDE your body, serial numbers on the equipment like computers and printers we own, cell phone chip numbers, RFID numbers on the food and clothes we buy and on and on and on.
If goobers wanted to track this murderer, they’d have him captured by now and completely scrubbed his background and whereabouts so that ONLY what THEY wanted known could be found. For example, if you have a credit card, all that is necessary to steal your information is simply walk by you with an electronic device that can read the card in your wallet. There are shields you can buy to prevent this, of course, but how many have them.
Satellites can track your physical moves. And of course, wire taps and cell phone taps are used constantly to track anyone who the state – read that “Obama” – wants to follow. Enemy of the State here we are.
How long before tracking chips are embeded in all our bodies?

Whenever a tangential connection between the gunman and the Left is reported, many commentators here blow it completely out of proportion, but whenever a connection between the gunman and the Right is reported, they write it off as media bias, or as Lefty attempt to discredit the Right. Apparently, even the OK-city bombing was a Leftist plot! Wow — the people saying that really are crazy!!!
Be that as it may, all the evidence coming out says that the truth is a lot more complicated and doesn’t fit into the rigid binary of Left vs. Right that is presumed in the silly comments made above.
The shooter was clearly emotionally unstable (his rants about “conscience dreaming,” etc.). Moreover, he wasn’t very bright, but he imagined himself to be so, as his YouTube postings demonstrate: he consistently makes bad grammar mistakes that any ESL student would know to avoid, but he accuses everyone in District 8 of being “illiterate.” In spite of his bad grammar, he repeatedly puts his statements in the form of syllogisms (i.e. “If A, then B. But B; therefore A”), which suggests that he was trying to ape a kind of false logical-rigor that he must have seen in college or in a book. And he discounts the opinions of others as not only “illiterate” but also as resulting from “brainwashing.” Most of his favorite books (which includes pro-Left and pro-Right tracts, depending on how you want to spin it) have a common theme: they assume the perspective of a someone who sees society for what it is, while everyone else in the society has the wool pulled over their eyes. All in all, it seems like he’s overcompensating for his lack of intelligence by trying to put on airs of beings smart and discounting the opinions of others, who he thinks are all “illiterate” and “brainwashed” anyway — in short, he was a paranoid idiot with delusions of personal grandeur.
As for his politics, the information coming out shows that they were all over the map, as you would expect from a stupid, mentally unstable person. His friends report that he was kind of a “libertarian” type who was socially liberal (source: http://twitter.com/caitieparker). In this vein, he was arrested on a drug charge and seemed to hold some pretty atheist views. But on the other hand, Fox news reported that he may have some connection to the American Renaissance, a hate group on the Right (source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lJ02SC2nLY). He tried to join the military (hardly common among people on the Left), but was turned down. And his rantings on YouTube are filled with anti-government paranoia, pretty typical for the Right, as well as weird thoughts about the gold standard, which is advocated by Austrian economics types like Rand Paul. Similarly, the shooter’s rantings about “conscience dreaming” and the government’s “controlling grammar” are very reminiscent of David Icke, an idiosyncratic but predominantly Right-wing speaker.
Wherever this guy’s views are on the political spectrum, everyone on this message board needs to tone it down with all the conspiracy and media bias crap. This is a tragedy that transcends ideology and party affiliation.
