According to this, this photo is from the annual MLK observance in Columbia, South Carolina, which is held on the north side steps of the statehouse. On those steps sits a large statue of George Washington. You know, the father of our country.

In the second picture, the speaker is the ‘Reverend’ William Barber, the President of the North Carolina NAACP. I don’t know why he was race-baiting for SC. This guy is a blight on my local school district in NC where they are moving from a diversity-based system to neighborhood schools.
One of the the local radio stations refer to him as the ‘Buffet Slayer’. I am not surprised to see that he is involved in this. What a shame to the honor of our first President!

An enormous monument to MLK is currently being erected on the National Mall in…dare I say it… Washington, DC.
Upon its completion, when that first MLK day rolls around, will the monuments to Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln, within sight of the 20 foot stone statue of MLK, need to be “disappeared”?

Actually, the slave trade was abolished in the British Empire in 1807, a good 58 years before the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.
Still, George Washington is a heroic, integral figure in your history and deserves more respect than he seems to be getting there.
Help me understand this: Black people get upset if their kids have to go to school on MLK, Jr. Day for a snow make-up day BUT wasn’t MLK a huge proponent of education and was highly educated himself? Sheeett, there is absolutely no reason for them to cover up the statue. If they were really concerned with protection, they could have roped off the area and/or moved their meeting elsewhere.
Actually the slave trade was made illegal in the US in 1808. That made import of slaves illegal but did not force the south to abandon the practice, a practice by the way carried on from the beginning of time and not considered unusual or inhumane until the spiritual awakening of late 1790 and early 1800. Without this revival of awakening if you will, abolishing slavery would have taken longer, until it was economically an advantage to hire free men instead of slaves. As most on this site already know, the ME and Africa continued that practice long into the 20th century.
I think Washington would prefer NOT to be associated with these freaks.

As a ‘black’ Christian American 65 year old pastor, I apologize for the defacing of the George Washington statue. I remember the 60′s very well and never want to go back there. Some healing of our nation has taken place, but this ‘sets us back.’ It sadden me to see this happen. I love this country and speak up for it as often as I can. I know if this hurt me, it hurt you also….I speak only for myself. I love everyone and know that healing will never happen in our country if these acts continue to happen.

Washington treated his people pretty well considering, and actually allowed them to participate in….FREE MARKET TRADE, by allowing the “slaves” to grow gardens to suppliment what rations Big George allocated, and any left overs the slave had they could sell in the local market for pocket money for themselves. These were not people who chose to emigrate from Africa. The forefathers were way ahead of their time, but they were far from perfect. They believed that some humans were meant to serve others. I can see why they would do such a thing.
