Obama Says “I Absolutely Believe China’s Peaceful Rise Is Good For The World, And It’s Good For America”…
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao vowed closer cooperation on Wednesday on critical issues ranging from increasing trade between the world’s two largest economies to fighting terrorism.
But they also stood fast on differences, especially over human rights.
Obama acknowledged that differences on rights were “an occasional source of tension between our two governments.”
He said at a joint news conference with Hu at the White House, “We have some core views as Americans about the universality of certain rights: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly.”
Obama said he drove that home forcefully in his discussions with the Chinese leader, but “that doesn’t prevent us from cooperating in these other critical areas.”
Hu, speaking through a translator, said both countries should “respect each other’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and development interests.”
Obama said, “I absolutely believe China’s peaceful rise is good for the world, and it’s good for America.”

The number is actually hard to nail down. Because so much of the Chinese economy is in fact owned by the PLA.
Full disclosure on PLA owned and operated companies is also available. Those companies make a profit which shows up as GDP but not as military spending.

Thanks. I don’t generally disagree with that critique, but I think you miss my point. I am a firm believer in markets and competition (or as the narrator uses “price & efficiency”) as the best inspiration for innovation. The critique, however, just jumps over non-monetary environmental and societal factors which is what I have problems with.
The narrator’s logic that mining has been happening since Roman times means it is ok. That ignores the exponential growth of mining and people.
Narrator jumps on the deforestation issue like a rabid dog and ignores that old growth forests are gone. When that happens, species die. Possibly beneficial species. New species don’t emerge at the rate others die.
Narrator claims that 200 years ago, if you drank water from a river you would get sick. Sure, maybe from giardia, but not from chemicals. He also claims they are cleaner now than 40 years ago. They are cleaner now because our government/EPA laid a major regulation smackdown on industry. He just argued for regulation!!!
Further, Narrator claims that if we weren’t feeding half the population they would be dead. While that is true, if there wasn’t colonization, getting third world countries hooked on Western goods and replacing their subsistence agriculture land with cash crops for export, they would be feeding themselves.
Finally, the narrator doesn’t take into account that large amounts of our goods, whether or not we have room to get rid of them, are being produced in sweat shops or by exploiting other human beings. And fuck it, I refuse to accept that is just how the world works.
In sum, the problem with the market approach is that it is a market approach. It doesn’t take into account any humanity or general pollution. In my opinion the economics idea of rational decision making is not the end all be all of existence. Sure free markets will work, but there has to be a sweeping, fundamental paradigm shift over business and industry and essentially what defines human success (P.S. a shift like this doesn’t come through regulation either – regulation is merely a band aid).
