NASA Targets Children With “Climate Kids” Global Warming Propaganda Website…

How bad is this website? Here’s a screen grab from a video on it of a polar bear explaining to a fish how humans are destroying his habitat.

Via Climate Quotes:

The climate is changing as it always has. Most climate scientists are unable to conceive of any natural cause for this change, and they claim that human emissions of CO2 are the cause. The evidence of increasing temperature is abundant, the evidence that human emissions are causing this increase is weak. Climate scientists rely on modeling to support their claims. These models are incomplete and inaccurate, but they claim that if you take the average of these incomplete and inaccurate models you will get the correct climate sensitivity. Even then, when you apply this sensitivity to the past it does not work. Unless of course, you factor in aerosols, which is essentially guesswork. Bottom line is this: the reasons behind the changing climate are not well understood (by anyone).

You don’t get that impression from NASA’s ‘Climate Kids‘ website. I told myself I wouldn’t use the word propaganda in this post, but the website is so one-sided and it is so obviously designed to appeal to emotion I don’t know what else to call it. Go ahead and visit before I describe it and see if you agree. I’ll wait.

Alright. In this post I will give you a tour of their site, hitting all the main sections. This is quite a long post with lots of pictures and one video, so take your time reading this one. Let’s first take a look at their ‘Big Questions‘ section. The first big question is What does “global climate change” mean? In the answer, the following two points appear:

The real cause of Global Climate Disruption is Daylight Saving Time! Compare the dates below with weather records; you’ll see the correlation between temperature and the effect of increased hours of daylight as more countries – especially the U.S. – adopted Daylight Saving Time. Britain alone caused irrevocable damage when they instituted Double Summer Time during WW2.

Germany and Austria began saving daylight on April 30, 1916. Other countries immediately adopted this 1916 action: Belgium, Denmark, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Turkey, and Tasmania. Nova Scotia and Manitoba adopted it as well, with Britain following suit three weeks later. In 1917, Australia and Newfoundland began saving daylight.*

(*This is where many researchers place the Post-Industrial beginnings of Global Climate Disruption.)

President Franklin Roosevelt instituted year-round Daylight Saving Time, called “War Time,” from February 9, 1942 to September 30, 1945. From 1945 to 1966, there was no federal law regarding Daylight Saving Time, so states and localities were free to choose whether or not to observe Daylight Saving Time and could choose when it began and ended.*

(*This corresponds with a cooling period in the temperature records)

Congress decided to step in and and to establish one pattern across the country. The Uniform Time Act of 1966, by President Lyndon Johnson, created Daylight Saving Time.*

(*This heralded the beginning of the dizzying spiral of rising temperatures and climatic disasters that have plagued us through the present.)

Save The Planet! Set your clocks on Gaia time! Practice Civil Disobedience by showing up an hour late for work!

This is the kind of crap that makes life really difficult for our youngsters. I have to keep staying on top of what my grandchildren (they live wiht us) learn in school in order to get them to learn to think for themselves and see what is true and what is not or unknown. Earth Day is always such fun. The tough part is when the kids – rightfully so – ask why I am right and the US GOVERNMENT or ESTABLISHED TEACHERS are WRONG. So far we are winning the battle, but if I could homeschool or put them in a better school – I would not hesitate for a minute to do so. Our school is not so bad in comparison to some out there, but it gets tougher all the time. And the stuff referred to in the article – propaganda for sure.

Surely AGW, which of course causes Climate Change (and has, ever since the mantle cooled enough to allow the continental crusts to form), is the sole reason for all observed anolmalies (from weight gain to zits).

Unless we act NOW our continued greedy activities will only futher exacerbate the recurring sunspot cycles that are caused by our climate ignorance, as well as warming on Mars and other planets, the increasing discoveries of more and more black holes (including within our own Snickers….er, um…Milky Way galaxy) and the evidence of more and more Dark Matter which will eventually swallow us all up like a galactic remake of The Blob.

So, vote for ever higher taxes and more and more government control of every aspect of your lives to combat this dire conclusion-in-search-of-a-cause.

    It just might work!

Well, it also might be an abysmal flop, but what the hey, at least we’re doing SOMETHING that will make us feel good, right? And isn’t THAT the primary criterion and final arbiter of any ersatz rational discussion?

Least arctic ice ever. For the love of humanity pull all of your heads out of Reagan’s rear and look around.

NASA isn’t at fault here. Like every agency in the US Govt. these days, it has been taken over by the Liberal mob running our country these days and forced to parrot the liberal line on issues. Obama and the Democrats have politicized our government agencies to a level never seen before. If we succeed in getting Obama and the Democrats out of that control there’s going to be a lot of de-programming necessary to clear out all the liberal ideologues they’ve forced into the system.

Magnitude of Greenland GISP2 ice core data
    http://wattsupwiththat.com/2011/01/24/easterbrook-on-the-magnitude-of-greenland-gisp2-ice-core-data/#more-32351

    Conclusions

Temperature changes recorded in the GISP2 ice core from the Greenland Ice Sheet show that the magnitude of global warming experienced during the past century is insignificant compared to the magnitude of the profound natural climate reversals over the past 25,000 years, which preceded any significant rise of atmospheric CO2. If so many much more intense periods of warming occurred naturally in the past without increase in CO2, why should the mere coincidence of a small period of low magnitude warming this century be blamed on CO2?

GISP2 and Vostok data show a similar historic pattern. A difference give the geographic difference is too be expected.

Unlike Mann’s Hockey Stick which came for a small geographically isolated sample.

I am a long time science teacher of science (30 years, so far). Why is it wrong for a government agency to provide science data, well established science, to our students and teachers? Many of you on this site…use generalities to show your displeasure. “Defund it, propaganda, etc, etc, and etc.

2010 is the hottest year on record. The level of heat storing carbon dioxide is nearly at 390 ppm (up from 280 ppm pre-industrial revolution). There is a melting event in the Arctic ice flow, the Antarctic/Greenland ice sheets and many examples of ice/glacial loss around the globe. The ocean’s pH is dropping due to rapid carbon dioxide absorption.

These facts…may not be convenient to your beliefs/agenda: you are entitled to your opinions, but…not entitled to make up your own facts.

Thank goodness for NASA and their outreach. Do you prefer we give our kids data from Glenn Beck, Bill O’Reilly and Rush Limbaugh? Let’s talk science, not soundbytes. MAYBE…this site should check out the “educational materials” from Chevron, Exxon, American Petroleum Institute….those open minded, science only, “profit doesn’t influence our materials and we don’t need to lie organizations?”

    Climate Depot Editorial

There they go again. The global warming establishment and the media are crowing about 2010 being in a tie for the “hottest year” ever. Everyone from Senator John Kerry to Joe Romm are screaming that this is “proof” the planet is burning up in a Co2 induced hell — and it’s your fault!

It is time for Climate Depot to do a point-by-point rebuttal to the latest round of temperature data nonsense. Let’s begin:

  23. Thanes says:
    January 24, 2011 at 3:13 pm

Also, saying NASA is “targeting” children is inflammatory. Tobacco companies “target” children when selling cigarettes. NASA just seems to want to inform children of the misery they will inherit because of morons like nearly all of you who refuse to understand facts because it runs counter to your political religion. We might only see enough misery for even you people to admit it to your own children, but then again, I’m sure you’ll just blame Clinton.

  24. Thanes says:

Woah, JCM, you completely misunderstand Hansen’ point.

  26. Thanes says:

  27. JCM says:

Hansen is a political HACK. 40 years ago it was the coming ice age, now it’s warming. Hansen showed his card in China when he praised a Commie thug regime as being better.

    I fully understand Hansen’s point.

And it has ZERO do to with climate and science.

  28. Thanes says:
    January 24, 2011 at 3:24 pm

It’s like when Darwinists “target” children when teaching evolution in school. Does that point resonate, or do you people have a problem with Darwin?

  30. Thanes says:
    January 24, 2011 at 3:29 pm

40 years ago there was some minor discussion amongst climate scientists about what, in absence of the CO2 forcing would have been a cooling trend. In 1988 James Hansen described what would happen and we are seeing it now. Hottest decade ever, least arctic ice ever, called it in 1988. Does that carry any weight for you? And what in hell do you mean calling Hansen a political hack?

  31. critical.thinking says:
    January 24, 2011 at 3:29 pm

Do any of you neigh sayers have a background in science? Have any of you actually analyzed the climate change data? Or are you simply regurgitating buzzwords that you hear in politically-biased media?

Let’s present our children with the facts, let them analyze the data and come to their own conclusions. While you are entitled to your own opinions, please don’t force them on your children. Children are exposed to enough biased information in their daily lives, without having their parents beliefs imposed on them. Teach your children to be critical thinkers and they will be able to make up their own minds about important issues, without politically charged influences.

But really, Hansen made a prediction, and that is how you judge science, if it makes predictions and if they turn out to be true. Just let a little logic in? Trust me, the world has a very short memory. If you drop rabid anti-intellectual refusal to deal with global warming, conservatism will not “lose.”

Theory represents the most developed science gets. Theory means something with so much independent confirmation and universal acceptance, and power to explain the observed world around us that it occupies a singular role in Scientific Theory. Not to quibble. And, after his beloved daughter died, he was really more of an Agnostic, rather than an atheist. Not to quibble.

  40. Thanes says:
    January 24, 2011 at 3:56 pm

His prediction holds up. Why do you think we are talking right now about the hottest year ever, hottest decade ever, least arctic ice ever? Because his prediction holds up. His solutions are not “political” but your reaction is. And what exactly is the Medieval warming period have to do with it? If I walk into a room, there’s smoke in the air, a gun in your hand and a dead guy on the floor, it really doesn’t matter if you once had a cousin who died from cancer. This is the same reasoning you are using to place emphasis on the MWP.

  41. Bunker says:

    @JCM

Truth, spreading Ice which has caused the winds to dip lower than it have in quite some time. We were in a warming period and now the earth has switched to a cooling period not due to man influencing it. The earth just does and man can just grab on and hope to survive. Hell back in the ’80s some were even claiming that Global Cooling was going to be so severe due to the abundance of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere that we would have to coat the poles in pitch and melt them to keep from freezing to death.

  42. Thanes says:
    January 24, 2011 at 4:07 pm

Bunker, show me anything in the 80′s from a scientist about that. Regarding what the world does, please read what James Hansen writes about humanity, the paleoclimate data, and the very fortunate coincidence of the last 8000 years of exceptional climate stability and the rise of advanced civilization. Climate instability is something human civilization has not had to deal with, so why would we persist in using a limited fossil fuel for the next hundred years to insure that we have to deal with climate change of unique severity that our species, maybe even genus has not had to deal with, let alone civilization.

It turns out that the climate scientists were the REAL problem all along, not the “evil” right wing neocons . Planet polluting chemicals, created by the trusted scientists made environmentalism necessary in the first place. Scientists are the enemy. Scientists are the very authority and power elite that progressivism should have been fighting all along, not the every day person sentenced to a carbon tax. Academic Scientists not only polluted the planet with their chemicals, they also produced cruise missiles, cancer causing chemicals, land mine technology, nuclear weapons, germ warfare, strip mining technology, deep sea drilling technology and now climate change. Let’s be real liberals again, the real liberals that doubt, question and challenge authority, not the traitors of progressivism who bowed like sheep to politicians promising to lower the seas. Thanes lied in his very first post. There’s no reason to take ANYTHING he says seriously. That’s what happens when the scientific method is replaced with a religious like devotion to dogma.

2010 was not the “Least arctic ice ever” and the only reason we tied for warmest year, is the continuous cooling of previous years’ records. Especially the 1930′s, as Hanson et al has been adjusting these records down for years, in order to proclaim 1998 the warmest evah.

h, what does it matter if a scientific conclusion appears arrogant? We cure pneumonia and even some cancers with science. We flew to the moon, jet across the planets, tame rivers and alter whole ecosystems with science. I’m not really that responsive to an argument to ignore science because “oh I’m just a speck, a miserable worm, a trembling mote withering in the grasp of an angry God, nothing I do will matter.” I think humanity has some good reasons to be arrogant. Like, for example, science.

I did not lie. The VOLUME of sea ice has been falling every year, multiuser ice is at an all time low, and yes, the surface of the ice this melt season was only the third lowest ever recorded. But the amount of ice, the volume, was the least ever. The Northwest passage has been navigated before, yes, over three years by polar explorers in ice breakers. This melt season it was just a wide open highway, took less than ten days.

Your reference is about NYC isn’t to any direct statement or work of Hansen, it is a conversation a journalist, from memory, not even notes, attributes to Hansen more than a decade later. Ever talked to a journalist and then seen how they rephrase you later? From memory? Ten years later? While selling a book?
Also, 1998 was recognized as an unusual event AT THE TIME by climate scientists because of an exceptional El Nino. If you look at the four major temperature indices, you will see 1998 as a spike superimposed on an unmistakable “hockey stick” dominant trend of warming. To say the years after 1998 showed “cooling” is misleading. Oh, but then again, that’s what you do here, isn’t it?

This sort of irrational emotional thinking clears the way for mass murder..

‘”We found that during the short events such as the Black Death and the Ming Dynasty collapse, the forest re-growth wasn’t enough to overcome the emissions from decaying material in the soil,” says Pongratz. “But during the longer-lasting ones like the Mongol invasion and the conquest of the Americas there was enough time for the forests to re-grow and absorb significant amounts of carbon.”

“Today about a quarter of the net primary production on the Earth’s land surface is used by humans in some way, mostly through agriculture,” Pograntz said. “So there is a large potential for our land-use choices to alter the global carbon cycle.”

“In the past we have had a substantial impact on global climate and the carbon cycle, but it was all unintentional,” Pograntz said. “Based on the knowledge we have gained from the past, we are now in a position to make land-use decisions that will diminish our impact on climate and the carbon cycle. We cannot ignore the knowledge we have gained.”

The current rate and scale of climate change are unprecedented in human history, and another study point out that if humanity does not heed the fate of the Greenland Vikings and the Roman Empire, civilization may be doomed to repeat the chaos of collapse.’

The repeated refusal of Warmist “scientists” to make their raw data available to critics is such a breach of scientific protocol that it amounts to a confession in itself.

Note, for instance Phil Jones’ Feb 21, 2005 response to Warwick Hughes’ request for his raw climate data: “We have 25 years or so invested in the work. Why should I make the data available to you, when your aim is to try and find something wrong with it?”

Arguing for man made global warming is only for the brain washed die hards who’s time has come and gone. CO2 was never a pollutant and never drove temps…it’s level always trailed & mirrored rises and falls in average temps. Never was a “greenhouse gas”…such is the propaganda of mystical magical pseudo science. Besides one major volcanic eruption spews more CO2 into the atmosphere than the entire industrial age of man…and then some. Their only angle to begin with was to play on fear & ignorance with localized weather phenomena…while at the same time denying any localized patterns that contradict their hysteria.

    Another Ice Age?
    Monday, Jun. 24, 1974

“As they review the bizarre and unpredictable weather pattern of the past several years, a growing number of scientists are beginning to suspect that many seemingly contradictory meteorological fluctuations are actually part of a global climatic upheaval. However widely the weather varies from place to place and time to time, when meteorologists take an average of temperatures around the globe they find that the atmosphere has been growing gradually cooler for the past three decades. The trend shows no indication of reversing. Climatological Cassandras are becoming increasingly apprehensive, for the weather aberrations they are studying may be the harbinger of another ice age.”

The Greenie message is entirely emotional and devoid of all logic.

They say that polar ice will melt and cause a big sea-level rise. Yet 91% of the world’s glacial ice is in Antarctica, where the average temperature is around minus 40 degrees Celsius. The melting point of ice is zero degrees.

So for the ice to melt on any scale the Antarctic temperature would need to rise by around 40 degrees, which NOBODY is predicting.

The median Greenie prediction is about 4 degrees. So where is the huge sea level rise going to come from? Huh… Thanes? ….Mars?

And the North polar area is mostly sea ice and melting sea ice does not raise the sea level at all.

Yet Warmists constantly hail any sign of Arctic melting. That the melting of floating ice does not raise the water level is known as Archimedes’ principle.

Archimedes demonstrated it around 2,500 years ago.

That Warmists have not yet caught up with that…. and must be just about the most blatant ignorance imaginable.

The whole Warmist scare defies the most basic physics.

Yet at the opening of 2011 we find the following unashamed lying by James Hansen: “We will lose all the ice in the polar ice cap in a couple of decades”.

This is my article above, and I’d like to respond to Thanes comments.

    Thanes:

“Any interest in talking about the hottest year ever, hottest decade ever? Least arctic ice ever?”

Hottest year ever, or at least tied for 2005 at 0.62°C above normal. How much hotter than the next highest year? 2/100′s of a degree. The margin of error on most thermometers is an order of magnitude larger than that, so the whole ‘hottest year’ claim is meaningless, if you value statistics. The term ‘statistically significant’ is not negotiable.

Hottest decade ever? Not by a long shot. You mean hottest decade since recent records have been taken (1880′s or so)? That may be the case, but what does it mean? Since all the ‘record hot’ years (1998, 2005, 2010) were el-nino events, it doesn’t speak to AGW at all. Climate scientists will admit that el-nino isn’t related to CO2 (el-nino was observed long before CO2 has heavily emitted). Plus, the world has been warming for longer than CO2 has been emitted on a large scale, so why is the current warming so alarming?

Least arctic ice ever? How can you make such a claim? We only started using satellite recording in 1979. Surely you don’t think 31 years (out of billions) is long enough to claim the ‘least arctic ice ever’? There is anecdotal evidence of diminished ice in the 1930′s and even earlier. You claim to value data sets, but if this is true, then you understand how invaluable (and potentially misleading) short data sets really are.

It is good to look past the standard talking points to the data, but the data just isn’t very alarming. It certainly doesn’t justify NASA’s misleading website.

Astrophysicist Piers Corbyn on the claim that 2010 was unusually warm….

    http://www.weatheraction.com/displayarticle.asp?a=299&c=5

“The Claim 2010 is ’2nd warmest year on record’ – is delusional, irrelevant & disingenuous – the last gasp of the failed global warming cult”

“The latest claims about World average temperatures by Government Weather organizations around the World such as UK MetOffice, apart from being contrary to the actual experience of the majority of the world population – notably USA, Europe, IndoChina and South America, raise four points.

    1. “The originators of this data are the same people and organizations who were caught fiddling data in the ‘ClimateGate’ affair,” said Piers. “The various whitewash enquiries arranged to cover-up their vandalisation of the scientific method cannot dodge the question:

WHY is there a statistically highly significant systematic inverse relationship between the number of stations they selected for ‘official’ use and the average temperatures resulting? What average temperature would result from the 62% of stations they removed since around the 1960s – which had the coldest temperature averages and the highest number of stations – up to the present decade – which is officially the warmest and has the least number of stations?

Anyone with a brain can see that this systematic connection means that either temperature is magically determined by the number of stations or there has been systematic selecting of data which is best described as data fraud”, said Piers.

“This question requires an international inquiry which is independent of any of the organizations involved in this data creation.

    2. “The experience of EXTREME cold for prolonged periods this year in a number of parts of the world – such as Britain, West Europe, most of the USA and much of South America (to name just a few) and the inane ‘cold is warm’ incantations, show the world average supposed extra warmth (which only exceeds the coldest year of the decade under their figures by 0.12 degree C – less than one quarter of a degree F) – is of no consequence or forecasting value whatsoever to man or beast.

A one quarter of a degree F increase in world average temperatures whether real or fraudulent has no bearing on whether or not a blizzard will hit Connecticut; any more than a world population rise CAUSES more babies to be born in Birmingham” said Piers.

    3. “The innuendo that this supposed ‘warmest year’ is somehow the driver of extreme events is baseless anti-science. It is no accident that the Met Office, BBC and New York Times / Guardian / Independent etc put forward various descriptions of circulation patterns such as La Nina as a cause of the things these phenomena describe and then pop-in that 2010 was the warmest year as if there were a connection.

Why not tell us there is a Royal wedding this year, that would be more interesting. The only connection is their desperation to save their failed cult ideology.

ALL the global warmist predictions since 2000 have failed and the OPPOSITE types of extremes (floods, supercold and blizzards) to their predictions (droughts, warm winters and the end-of-snow) have occurred, so their warmist (or warm is cold) explanations for extreme events are as useless as saying “Wet days cause rain”.

If weather were just entertainment this would not matter but their refusal to accept their total failure forces up energy and food prices through low carbon cult measures and holds back real science which directly prevents governments and authorities from applying useful forecasts which can reduce suffering and save lives.

People have died on UK and Europe’s roads through lack of winter salting due to Met Office failed warmist winter forecasts and Australian floods are worse because the Govt cut dam projects under Green ‘expect droughts’ advice. The Global warming cult ideology is reducing living standards and causing needless suffering and death, and must be stopped.”

    4. The real causes of extreme weather were known and their results predicted: The very extreme weather events around the world last year and this year are caused by solar-lunar DRIVEN ‘sticking’ of the normal motions of the jet streams in the North and South hemisphere and of the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).

“Scientists find ‘drastic’ weather-related Atlantic shifts”

Scientists have pointed to a disruption or shifts in the oscillation as an explanation for moist or harsh winters in Europe, or severe summer droughts such as in Russia, in recent years.

    by Staff Writers
    Geneva (AFP) Jan 4, 2011

Scientists have found evidence of a “drastic” shift since the 1970s in north Atlantic Ocean currents that usually influence weather in the northern hemisphere, Swiss researchers said on Tuesday.
The team of biochemists and oceanographers from Switzerland, Canada and the United States detected changes in deep sea Atlantic corals that indicated the declining influence of the cold northern Labrador Current.
They said in the US National Academy of Science journal PNAS that the change “since the early 1970s is largely unique in the context of the last approximately 1,800 years,” and raised the prospect of a direct link with global warming.
The Labrador Current interacts with the warmer Gulfstream from the south.
They in turn have a complex interaction with a climate pattern, the North Atlantic Oscillation, which has a dominant impact on weather in Europe and North America.
Scientists have pointed to a disruption or shifts in the oscillation as an explanation for moist or harsh winters in Europe, or severe summer droughts such as in Russia, in recent years.
One of the five scientists, Carsten Schubert, of the Swiss Federal Institute of Acquatic Sciences and Technology (EAWAG), underlined that for nearly 2,000 years the sub polar Labrador current off northern Canada and Newfoundland was the dominant force.
However that pattern appeared to have only been repeated occasionally in recent decades.
“Now the southern current has taken over, it’s really a drastic change,” Schubert told AFP, pointing to the evidence of the shift towards warmer water in the northwest Atlantic.
The research was based on nitrogen isotope signatures in 700 year old coral reefs on the ocean floor, which feed on sinking organic particles.
While water pushed by the Gulfstream is salty and rich in nutrients, the colder Arctic waters carried by the Labrador current contain fewer nutrients.
Changes could be dated because of the natural growth rings seen in corals.
“The researchers suspect there is a direct connection between the changes in oceanic currents in the North Atlantic and global warming caused by human activities,” said EAWAG in a statement.

    * As Graham Stringer MP, a member of the Committee, has pointed out: “The Oxburgh panel did not do as our predecessor committee had been promised, investigate the science, but only looked at the integrity of the researchers… This leaves a question mark against whether CRU science is reliable.”
    * Lord Oxburgh’s Science Appraisal Panel may have not been wholly independent (paragraph 32).
    * The review by Lord Oxburgh lacked rigour and diligence (paragraphs 33; 61).
    * The Inquiries failed to investigate the serious allegation relating to the deletion of e-mails in response to an FOI request (89).
    * None of the inquiries have determined if CRU staff actually contacted the journals they discussed threatening. The alleged threatening of the highly respected journal Geophysical Research Letters, arguably the most important incident in this area, has yet to be examined at all. In the first place AGW is a myth. A complete and total myth. Mankind has nothing to do with climates changing, it is all a natural phenomenon that is influenced by ocean currents, winds, sunspot activity and volcanic activity.

You can do your own research to see these factors at work in the natural world, for example in the early 19th century and the late 1880′s.

Love the comments on peer reviewed papers. You have AGW types reviewing papers by other AGW types. Big whoop. That’s not peer review its pure propaganda disguised as science. Try asking these same AGW’rs to review a skeptic’s papers. Watch how fast they are dismissed…

The flawed data of instrumentation is also worth a mention. Locating tempature instrumentation next to places like airport runways, where temps are warmer in the winter, doesn’t make for an accurate reading.

And whatever happened to all the temperature monitors in Siberia? This temp data has conveniently been ignored in the computation of world temps since the fall of the Soviet Union.

Locating carbon instumentation downwind from active volcanos and the generator next to a science station in Antarctic doesn’t cut it either.

    All the data is flawed and is based on a flawed theory, but yet it is prepackaged to match up with a preconcieved assumption not based on empirical data;
but on the socialist ideas of power and control…or in the case of Michael Mann…grant money.

Furthermore don’t get bamboozled by the lab coated cretins and their idea that a theory is anything but a Wild Fucking Guess.

    Theory – WAG
Postulate – Only parttially provable empirically speakig
Fact – Proven with demonstable proofs (observable empirical data)

Oh and here’s a link to the 31,000+ scientists who are against AGW…yes there are climatogolgists in that group:

    http://www.petitionproject.org/signers_by_last_name.php

The problem with AGW propagandists is that they think that everyone is like the mush heads that they preach to on a daily basis. Or that they are dumb enough to believe that laymen and women are unable to think for themselves.

So when they pose their syllogistic fallacies regarding how you view their lies, they assume that the skeptic is a Beck watcher or a FOX TV watcher and attempt to dismiss your counter argument for real empirical data rather than the propaganda of their peer reviewed mawkish screeds.

Those that learned the scientific method in school, don’t need Beck or FOX to do their homework for them.

Hey but when it comes to AGW why bother with facts, when an AGW’r can dazzle the rubes with BS huh?

Just go ask manbearpig whose personal fortune has soared to 500 million; up from just 2 mil in 1999.

Follow the grant money boyz and girlz and you’ll find the real truths behind AGW/Climate Change.

Like I said before…some of you just don’t know or understand science. Humans emit 100 times more CO2 than volcanoes. Pure and simple.

Yes, Antarctica may not melt…but how about the ice in the Cascades, Himalayas, Andes??? Here in Oregon…we need snowpack for our drinking water, for agriculture/irrigation, salmon runs. Pure and simple. Look at facts.

Instead of calling names and cursing…how about facts? Why has Exxon and the American Petroleum Institute spent money to debunk climate change? You are mad at NASA. Look up the leaked memo from a 1998 API meeting and how big oil was going to fund some $5 million to schools/to discredit climate change? Why? They are afraid. Sadly…they have lackies, like many on this list…who shill for them, free of charge, with no facts/all rhetoric.

Follow the grant money? You can’t be serious? Follow the oil donations to politicians like Inhofe who started that bogus list of deniers. Follow the oil subsidies like taxpayers like you and I shell out for what? How about the oil lobbyist money. Follow the grant money? What a funny joke. That money is nothing compared to the dirty oil money. It is nothing compared to the billions in tax breaks/subsidies and tax loopholes. Hell, Exxon didn’t pay corporate income taxes in 2009. Not a dime.

And last…big government science. You mean the science that gave us NASA and computer technology/internet/vaccines…you mean that science? Why are so many of you slaves to the idea of big bad government. Let’s see ….when Bush was president, the undersecretary for the US Forest Service was Mark Rey…a timber lawyer? What was Judge Clarence Thomas…before a Supreme Court guy? Oh…a lawyer for Monsanto. If you took the time to check “who” was heading much of the government…you would see corporate scientists/lawyers/appointees. Wake up and instead of your UN conspiracy theories….look at the our democracy morphing into a corporatist state (with 14th amendment protection as citizens? Really?).

Yes, many of you deniers are just lining up for your servitude as slaves in the new world order of Exxon, Comcast, Monsanto and Dow. “Bread and Circus”….with a little government conspiracy thrown in (Obama is a Muslim, watch out for the new black panthers, ACORN…blah, blah, blah). Climate change is real…it is doing significant ecological and economic damage.

    NASA extremist advocates U.S. decline

Radical greenie James Hansen pushes Chinese war on American economy

James E. Hansen, director of the taxpayer-funded NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies. Last week, Mr. Hansen called on China to lead an international effort to impose fees on carbon-dioxide emissions, then lead the World Trade Organization to allow import fees on goods from any county – with the U.S. being the target – without such fees.

The goal, Hansen states, would be to punish America, causing “continual descent into second-rate and third-rate economic well-being,” until the “fossil-money- ‘democracy’” no longer “rules the roost in Washington.” Mr. Hansen also praised communist Chinese leadership for “tak[ing] the long view … in contrast to the West with its [lamentably] short election cycles.”

His anti-democracy disposition is real. Mr. Hansen supports American courts forcing carbon-dioxide limits on the public without presidential or congressional action.

A year ago, he endorsed “Time’s Up” by Keith Farnish, who argued, “The only way to prevent global ecological collapse and thus ensure the survival of humanity is to rid the world of Industrial Civilization.” The book considers “razing cities to the ground … along with an (almost certainly necessary) element of sabotage.”

John F. Borowski supports James Hansen’s worldview

NOW this has to be the most idiotic lie I’ve seen yet on this whole thread.

Volcanoes = 130 million tonnes [average...but a since major volcanic eruptions are not a consistent yearly occurrence, this number is low]

    Vegetation & Land = 439 million tonnes

    Oceans = 332 million tonnes

    Humans = 29 million tonnes

29 million tonnes of CO2 from humans, compared to roughly over 900 million tonnes naturally from the earth yearly…yet we are supposedly “tipping the natural balance”…and even at that CO2 doesn’t even do what they claim it does.

Idiotic lies? According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the world’s volcanoes, both on land and undersea, generate about 200 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually, while our automotive and industrial activities cause some 24 billion tons of CO2 emissions every year worldwide.

Those peaky things called…facts. And to my biochemist friend…carbon dioxide traps infrared radiation. We have pushed carbon dioxide levels from 280 ppm to nearly 390 ppm. Wouldn’t that mean more stored heat?

I support Hansen’s work indeed. How does that morph into some conspiracy theroy? You guys sure are good at creating fiction. What gives? Capitalism where economic value of nature (not extracted) is zero dollars is voodoo. I know you call them externalities…yet, in the absence of value of nature’s services/not included in extractive capitalism…is a recipe for disaster. Why are species going extinct so quickly? Why is forest cover declining worldwide? Why are synthetic chemicals in the breast milk of our women? There is a hidden cost for capitalism that industry hides. Lastly, if some of you are so stauch defenders of democracy…how can you justify corporate socialism? How can you justify corporations paying no income taxes? How can you justify corporate crimes? Think for yourselves. Think about the future for our children.

You’re off by a factor of 1,000, rev, which our faux science teacher/Democrat Underground/Common Dreams/Every Marxist Website You Can Think Of writer selectively pounced on.

Yes, humans pump 29 gigatons (billion) into the atmosphere. Nature pumps the 439 + 332 BILLION tons. And yes, that’s roughly 3% contributed by humanity. And funny thing is (well maybe not for our faux science teacher) those numbers were at a PRO global warming website.

Absorption of Infrared Radiation by carbon dioxide happens because the carbon-oxygen bonds can stretch or flex at a frequency that allows them to absorb an infrared photon. There are a number of ways in which the molecule can oscillate. One type involves the bonds stretching and contracting like springs. The molecule can absorb an IR photon when this stretching is asymmetric. The alternative is for the bonds to flex as shown in this animation. The flexing movement allows absorption at a longer wavelength.

Okay…not absorb. Oh and yes, the US Geologic Survey is another Marxist, Democratic, socialist group? Many of you need therapy or…you need to stop reading Climate Depot and listening to Rush, Bill and Glenn.

“…The ocean’s pH is dropping due to rapid carbon dioxide absorption….”

Really??? You have zero facts to back up that wild claim…Borowski…
    ********************************
The latest scare is the possible effect of extra CO2 on the world’s oceans, because more CO2 lowers the pH of seawater.

While it is claimed that this makes the water more acidic, this is misleading.

Since seawater has a pH around 8.1, it will take an awful lot of CO2 it to even make the water neutral (pH=7), let alone acidic (pH less than 7).

In fact, ocean acidification is a scientific impossibility.

Henry’s Law mandates that warming oceans will outgas CO2 to the atmosphere (as the UN’s own documents predict it will), making the oceans less acid.

Also, more CO2 would increase calcification rates.

No comprehensive, reliable measurement of worldwide oceanic acid/base balance has ever been carried out: therefore, there is no observational basis for the computer models’ guess that acidification of 0.1 pH units has occurred in recent decades.

What happens…just by chance…if you, Rob, are wrong and climate change is real? Do you have kids? Do you beleive in the precautionary principle?

Rob…remember basic pH. Far from a wild claim. I teach marine science.

http://www.ozcoasts.org.au/indicators/ocean_acid.jsp (good site for you to brush up on your chemistry)

The way pH scales work, a 0.1 drop in pH is actually a 26 percent increase in acidity.

Ocean scientists are seeing just the kind of corrosive effects you would expect from acidification. Last year, for instance, one team reported in the prestigious journal Science that coral growth along Australia’s Great Barrier Reef had declined by 14 percent since 1990 – a “severe and sudden decline” unseen in centuries. Other studies have found that the shells of some “forams” – tiny creatures that are a key part of the marine food chain – are 30 percent lighter today than they were in the past.

These trends give a whole new meaning to the phrase “bad chemistry.” But things could get worse. Thanks to some irrefutable laws of physics and math, researchers have calculated that ocean pH will fall to about 7.8 by the end of the century, if we don’t act soon to curb our carbon dioxide emissions. That is a four-tenths pH drop from pre-industrial levels – or a whopping 150 percent increase in acidity. Our seas haven’t been that acidic in tens of millions of years.

Did you decide…??? Based on what empirical evidence…???

To say that you Greenie’s have settled the “science” is an incredibly crass position to take… since all of your models are flawed and have failed, miserably…??

This little gem from the AAAS…

December 2006, the AAAS adopted an official statement on climate change in which they stated, “The scientific evidence is clear: global climate change caused by human activities is occurring now, and it is a growing threat to society….The pace of change and the evidence of harm have increased markedly over the last five years. The time to control greenhouse gas emissions is now.”

You can not prove that man has influenced in any way… global climate change…

In fact to show how ridiculous you “scientists” are…

    Here’s a gem from the year 2000…

“…According to Dr David Viner, a senior research scientist at the climatic research unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, within a few years winter snowfall will become “a very rare and exciting event”. “Children just aren’t going to know what snow is,” he said….”

    http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/snowfalls-are-now-just-a-thing-of-the-past-724017.html

Eleven years ago… that jackass… a “scientist” made this statement…
who is also a devout Greenie…

    Not very scientific is he…????

What happens…just by chance…if you, Borowski, are wrong and climate change is real? Do you have kids? Do you believe in the precautionary principle?

    Well…???

The “precautionary principle” is a favorite Greenie idea — but isn’t that what George Bush was doing when he invaded Iraq?

Wasn’t that a precaution against Saddam getting or having any WMDs?

So you Greenies all agree with the Iraq intervention?

    If not, why not?

  118. John F. Borowski says:
    January 25, 2011 at 11:42 pm

Yes, I agreed with the invasion of Iraq….based on the data we were told. It was precautionary…until I (and all citizens) saw the data behind the spin. Then, I was disgusted by the lies.

Can you wrap your head around that? Funny thing…I hope climate change is not real. Yet, I see animal migrating back to Oregon sooner each year. I see water shortages we didn’t have 20 years ago. These changes scare me because…I care about our state, our agricultural base, our fisheries. That shoots down your anti-people comments.

Lastly, I will ask one more time…we do you make (many of you) make such idiotic (notice I don’t curse, call you Nazis) assumptions? All the curse words/insults. I was a registered Republican, fiscal conservative, liked T. Roosevelt’s approach to ecological protection. I am a gun owner/pro-life…yet, that probably doesn’t fit nicely into your pigeon hole approach of putting labels on people. I am God fearing and have great respect for people. But, let me tell you, it is hard to respect many of the paper tigers on this list.

I see mass extinction of species looming across the planet. Are you or anyone else going to deny that? I see our forests worldwide (primary forests) butchered. Is anyone going to deny that? Come to Oregon and I will show you 100 years of industrial forestry does to jobs, communities (cut and run), salmon and native forests. I care about workers…I was a steel worker before I became a teacher. But…I will be cursed and accused of “socialistic” behavior by people…who honestly…seem unhinged.

Finally….climate is complex. From the properties of water vapor, to the sun’s variations, to aerosols in the atmosphere: I have always acknowledged the complex science of climate. Data is important in science…not calling people a “retarded communist pig?” Glaciers are melting? Yes? CO2 levels are increasing? Yes? There are both terrestrial/marine shifts in migrations? Yes? Precautionary principle? Yes. I want to be sure that we are not pissing away our kid’s resource base and standard of living.

I favor carbon taxes. Cap and trade is a scam. Global warming/non global warming will be settled by reasoned discussion among scientists and citizens. If global warming is such a joke…why are fossil fuel interests fighting it so hard? No, I am not an expert: yet…I don’t get my data from Marc Morano or Fred Singer (best science money can buy) or will you tell me Rob…that tobacco science is what you want paving the future for your kids and mine?

I want to see us move to sustainable energy sources….even nuclear (if we can store the waste safely). Burning fossil fuels cannot last. Plus…is it not socialist to give massive subsidies to coal, oil and gas interests? That is why…I try to have a decent conversation. I try to give the benefit of the doubt to people I engage in discussion: several people including you, engage in wild talk/insulting terminology. I embrace technology for your information…but, I am not a slave to BAD technology. Let your kids drink from water that has solvents in it from drilling for natural gas or let your family have generations of land ownership destroyed by mountain top removal…then talk to me about “technology.” I see predictable trends here…disagree with “you folks” about climate change…and you are a socialist, greenie, retard, communist. How does that work. I am not afraid to post my name or engage anyone face to face. I don’t hurl insults at anyone or their beliefs hiding behind a computer screen or fake name. I can’t say that for “your side” of the discussion.

So, maybe I have wasted my time. Yet, I learn from people. That takes listening. Try it some time.

‘Global warming’ has become the grand political narrative of the age, replacing Marxism as a dominant force for controlling liberty and human choices. — Prof. P. Stott

Prof. Stott has been critical of terms like ‘climate sceptic’ and ‘climate-change denier’; he believes in a distinction between the science of climate change and what he asserts is the Barthesian myth [14] of global warming [15], saying,

“… the global warming myth harks back to a lost Golden Age of climate stability, or, to employ a more modern term, climate ‘sustainability’. Sadly, the idea of a sustainable climate is an oxymoron. The fact that we have rediscovered climate change at the turn of the Millennium tells us more about ourselves, and about our devices and desires, than about climate. Opponents of global warming are often snidely referred to as ‘climate change deniers’; precisely the opposite is true. Those who question the myth of global warming are passionate believers in climate change – it is the global warmers who deny that climate change is the norm.”

Both NOAA and NASA this month announced that 2010 was tied for the warmest year. The UK Climate Research Unit at East Anglia University proclaimed 2010 the second warmest year since 1850.

But after the incredibly cold and snowy winters in 2008/09 and 2009/10 and so far in 2010/11, those claims are falling on increasingly deaf ears. The public doubt about global warming has been increasing given the Climategate disclosures suggesting scientists have been ‘cooking the books’, especially when earlier promises of warm, snowless mid-latitude winters failed miserably.

Reluctantly, alarmists and their cheerleaders in the media changed their tune and the promise of warm and snowless winters with ‘global warming’ morphed into global warming means cold and snowy winters.

ABC News even said cold and snowy winters would be the new norm because of global warming.

Non sequiturs like that have sadly become ‘the new norm’ in the wacky world of the mainstream media.

To try and stop the bleeding, NOAA and NASA took steps to reduce or eliminate the cooling.

This aggravated what already was an already a bad situation.

CRU data base programmer Ian ‘Harry’ Harris’s frustrated rants in his Climategate log were eye-opening… “[The] hopeless state of their (CRU) data base. No uniform data integrity, it’s just a catalogue of issues that continues to grow as they’re found…There are hundreds if not thousands of pairs of dummy stations…and duplicates… Aarrggghhh! There truly is no end in sight. This whole project is SUCH A MESS. No wonder I needed therapy!!”

Furthermore, in a candid interview on the BBC, CRU’s Director Phil Jones admitted his “surface temperature data are in such disarray they probably cannot be verified or replicated”.

In a Climategate email, Phil Jones acknowledges that CRU mirrors the NOAA data. “Almost all the data we have in the CRU archive is exactly the same as in the Global Historical Climatology Network (GHCN) archive used by the NOAA National Climatic Data Center.”

And NASA uses NOAA data applying their own adjustments. All three data bases suffer from the same flaws.

Dwight Eisenhower in his 1961 Farewell Address to the Nation warned: “The prospect of domination of the nation’s scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present – and is gravely to be regarded.”

NOAA’s Administrator Dr. Jane Lubchenko, when she was president of AAAS in 1999, urged “Urgent and unprecedented environmental and social changes challenge scientists to define a new social contract … a commitment on the part of all scientists to devote their energies and talents to the most pressing problems of the day, in proportion to their importance, in exchange for public funding.”

In other words… whoring yourselves.. for a spot at the government tit…

NOAA and NASA are together receiving nearly a billion dollars in direct government climate research funding and up to $600 million more from the Recovery Act of 2009.

For that they are expected to support environmental, social and political agendas.

In other words… whoring yourselves for political favor

The Congress should be focusing on whether they can trust the global warming scientists in data centers, labs and most universities who have benefited to the tune of over $73 billion in the last two decades.

So is 2010 the warmest year?, the 2000s the warmest decade? … Don’t bet on it!

James Hansen, the head of NASA’s climate unit and one of the worst of the alarmists, said truthfully in 1999:

The U.S. has warmed during the past century, but the warming hardly exceeds year-to-year variability. Indeed, in the U.S. the warmest decade was the 1930s and the warmest year was 1934.

That didn’t get the warmists where they were trying to go, so they have now changed the data by eliminating or drastically reducing the urban heat island effect.

NASA now shows very different data for the period 1880-1999 from what it published in 1999.

You would probably assume that NOAA and NASA have made their raw data available to independent researchers, along with explanations of the adjustments they have made.

But no–those agencies have resisted Freedom of Information Act requests for the original, raw data.

You refuse FOIA requests because your “cooked” data is flawed…

Greenies have an agenda… and your agenda is death…

    so long human hater…

Arctic sea ice set another minimum recording in January

    Doug O’Harra | Feb 3, 2011
The extent of sea ice on the Arctic Ocean just set another minimum record, covering the smallest area during mid-winter seen since satellite monitoring began in 1979.

The polar ice cap covered about 5.23 million square miles last month — 19,300 square miles smaller than the previous minimum record set in January 2006 and about 490,000 square miles below the 1979-2000 average, according to a new analysis by the National Snow and Ice Data Center.

To put those figures in perspective, it’s as though a frozen habitat about as large as California, Oregon, Washington and Nevada combined had turned to slush.

While the extent of frozen ocean near Alaska was above normal, coverage off eastern Canada was meager, especially in Hudson Bay, Hudson Strait and Davis Strait.

“Normally, these areas freeze over by late November, but this year Hudson Bay did not completely freeze over until mid-January,” the NSIDC reported. “The Labrador Sea remains largely ice-free.”

December ice coverage was also the lowest on record for that month. Scientists blame both records on a climate pattern called the Arctic Oscillation.

“Air temperatures over much of the Arctic were (4 to 11 degrees Fahrenheit) above normal in January,” the NSIDC said.

“As in December 2010, the warm temperatures in January came from two sources: unfrozen areas of the ocean continued to release heat to the atmosphere, and the wind patterns (that) brought warm air into the Arctic.”

From The New York Times, 1969

From the 9th century to the 13th century almost no ice was reported there. This was the period- of Norse colonization of’ Iceland and Greenland. Then, conditions worsened and the Norse colonies declined. After the Little Ice Age of 1650 to 1840 the ice began to vanish near Iceland and had almost disappeared when the trend re versed, disastrously crippling Icelandic fisheries last year.
    ####################################################

From The New York Times, 2000

The thick ice that has for ages covered the Arctic Ocean at the pole has turned to water, recent visitors there reported yesterday. At least for the time being, an ice-free patch of ocean about a mile wide has opened at the very top of the world, something that has presumably never before been seen by humans and is more evidence that global warming may be real and already affecting climate. The last time scientists can be certain the pole was awash in water was more than 50 million years ago.

Is it possible that the IPCC is trying to rewrite the history books?

What scientists subverting science for cash.? Oh yeah.. they love the green..
    ###################################################

We have been hearing a lot about how the decline in Arctic ice is following the “steepest slope ever.”

The point is largely meaningless, but we can have some fun with it.

The Bremen Arctic/Antarctic maps are superimposed, showing that ice in the Antarctic is at a record high and growing at the “steepest slope ever.”

You will also note that most of the world’s sea ice is located in the Antarctic. But those are inconvenient truths when trying to frighten people into believing that “the polar ice caps are melting.”

There are several favorite lines of defense when trying to rationalize away the record Antarctic ice.

    1. It is the Ozone Hole – which is also the fault of evil, American SUV drivers. That is a nice guilt trip, but sadly the Ozone Hole doesn’t form until August and is gone by December. Strike one.

    2. The next one is to point out that some regions of the west side of the tiny Antarctic Peninsula have been warming. Never mind that the Antarctic Peninsula is an active volcanic ridge, and that the waters around it have not shown any significant warming. Strike two.

The third favorite line of defense is to argue that “we expected Antarctica to warm more slowly because of the mass of the southern oceans.” Nice try – “slower warming” is not the same as “cooling.” Strike three.

(The AGW view of Antarctica is every bit as irrational as FIFA’s stand that not having instant replays somehow helps the referees’ reputations.)

Climate modelers know sea ice volume decline is tied to positive NAO as we saw from 1980 until a year ago.

The timing of the Cryosat 2 launch with the onset of negative NAO will document the build up of sea ice volume for the next thirty years.

    This is AGW’s worst nightmare.

December/January was the snowiest first two months of winter on record in the northern hemisphere, but NSIDC’s latest newsletter forgot to mention this fact. Their only mention of snow is below.

“…While the Arctic has been warm, cold and stormy weather has affected much of the Northeast U.S. and Europe. Last winter also paired an anomalously warm Arctic with cold and snowy weather for the eastern U.S. and northern Europe. Is there a connection?…”

    They also said :

“…This was the lowest January ice extent recorded since satellite records began in 1979….”

Which does not agree with DMI, who showed January ahead of 2006 – the year which had the highest summer minimum in their database.

As for NSIDC’s claim that the Arctic has been “warm” I’m not sure that -25C would be considered that warm by most people.

Record high snow cover is apparently not an interesting topic for NSIDC.

    I wonder why not?

Perhaps… John “the sky is falling” Borowski can tell us??

    Mean Temperature….-6 °F….-20 °F…..-30 °F
    Min Temperature…….-9 °F….-26 °F….-40 °F

Throughout December of 2010 and early January 2011, Nunavut, northern Quebec and western Greenland set many high temperature records.

In Coral Harbour, a high of 3.3°C in mid-December broke the old record of 1.7°C set in 1963. (BTW…Was that globull warming in 1963??)

The daily minimum temperature on January 6, 2011, was about 30°C warmer than normal.

The unusual warmth was due largely to an unseasonal area of high pressure over Greenland, and very negative values of the Arctic oscillation and North Atlantic oscillation.

By the way… you use Wikipedia…?? Seriously??
    ##################################################

And John you should know my post stated arctic temps… which are -30C

you cite Coral Harbor which is way outside the Arctic Circle..

    ##################################################

    Now the polar bears…. again…

According to a U.S. Senate and Public Works Committee report, the “alarm about the future of polar bear decline is based on speculative computer model predictions many decades in the future. Those predictions are being “challenged by scientists and forecasting experts,” said the report.

Those challenges, supported by facts on the ground, including observations from Inuit hunters in the region, haven’t stopped climate fear-mongers at the U.S. Geological Survey from proclaiming that future sea ice conditions “will result in the loss of approximately two-thirds of the world’s current polar bear population by the mid 21st century.”

Such sky-is-falling rhetoric brings smiles to the Inuit population of Canada’s Nunavut Territory. (Thats the same area you use for your small sample)

They, too, know how to count, and they claim the bear population is stable or on the rise in their own backyard. Polar bears may be on the decline in some areas, but during their frequent visits to Inuit towns and outposts they rarely decline an easy meal from the local dump or a poorly secured garbage can.

Harry Flaherty, chair of the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board in the capital of Iqaluit, says the polar bear population in the region, along the Davis Strait, has doubled during the past 10 years. He questions the official figures, which are based to a large extent on helicopter surveys.

“Scientists do a quick study one to two weeks in a helicopter, and don’t see all the polar bears. We’re getting totally different stories [about the bear numbers] on a daily basis from hunters and harvesters on the ground,” he says.

Dr. Mitchell Taylor, a biologist who has been researching polar bear populations in Canada’s Nunavut Territory for 35 years, seems to agree. “The study estimates from the Iqaluit area agree with those of local hunters, although the accuracy of the counts is doubtful in some areas,” he says.

Gabriel Nirlungayuk, director of wildlife for Nunavut Tuungavik Inc., is another doubter who questions the accuracy of helicopter surveys. “Helicopters have many limitations, including fuel capacity. They can’t go far out into the open water,” he says. But hunters crisscrossing the area by dog team, snowmobile or boat “are seeing polar bears where scientists and helicopters are not traveling.”

Forty years ago, old-timers living in the area around Hudson Bay were lucky to see a polar bear, Nirlungayuk says. “Now there are bears living as far south as James Bay.”

The growing population has become “a real problem,” especially over the last 10 years, he says. During the summer and fall, families enjoying outdoor activities must be on the look-out for bears. Many locals invite along other hunters for protection.

Last year, in Pelly Bay, all the bears that were captured were caught in town, Nirlungayuk says. “You now have polar bears coming into towns, getting into cabins, breaking property and just creating havoc for people up here,” he says.

In the Western Hudson Bay area, where harvest quotas were reduced by 80 percent four years ago, communities are complaining about the number of polar bears. “Now people can look out the window and see as many as 20 polar bears at the ice-flow edge,” Flaherty says.

During a public hearing last September focusing on the polar bear population in the Baffin Bay region, hunters reported more sightings of females with three cubs. The normal litter is one or two. Flaherty, himself a serious hunter, says the abundant food supply – primarily baby ring seals – in the area is responsible for the bigger litters.

The on-the-ground reports, if accurate, seem to contradict the official story of the beleaguered polar bear.

According to the standard theory, warmer temperatures (caused by human CO2 emissions) are shrinking the ice floe, the polar bear’s main hunting ground, forcing populations to compete for a diminishing food supply. Warmer temperatures also are to blame for the loss of thicker “multi-year ice.”

Flaherty and many others disagree with the official story. “We are aware there are changes in the weather, but it is not affecting the daily life of the animals,” he says. “Polar bears hunt in the floe-edge areas, on newly formed ice, and in the fiords in search of baby seals. They don’t hunt in the glaciers [areas of multi-year ice].

“We’re not seeing negative effects on the polar bear population from so-called climate change and receding ice,” he says. He is convinced that some scientists are deliberately “using the polar bear issue to scare people” about global warming, a view widely shared by many Nunavut locals.

It has warmed in the region and, as Taylor confirms, the summer sea-ice boundary has been slowly contracting for the last 30 years and experienced a big decline in 2007 – an event that was widely reported as evidence of anthropogenic (human-caused) global warming.

However, the shrinking sea ice does not affect polar bear numbers uniformly, he emphasizes. “Even in adjacent sub-populations, the impact may vary,” he says. “Every population is ecologically different. Some populations may actually benefit from less sea ice.”

Taylor downplays the theory that CO2 is the culprit responsible for warmer Arctic temperatures.

The IPCC models, he claims, are “multiplying the effect of CO2 to obtain the temperature increases they predict,” a criticism shared by others in the scientific community who have openly accused modelers of data manipulation.

“The idea that these models can make predictions 50 to 100 years into the future seems, frankly, absurd to me.”

Both Nirlungayuk and Flaherty ridicule media claims that the polar bear is threatened or on the verge of extinction.

“Polar bears are very intelligent . . . they have adapted through many climate changes for thousands of years. They are not going to wait around for the ice to freeze to start hunting. They live on more than just seals,” says Nirlungayuk.
Adds Flaherty: “At the end of the day, the King of the North will always be here. When we hear that polar bears are headed towards extinction, we just kind of smile at ourselves.”

1959 in the link above has the closest high to zero in January (-0.6 reached on the 17th and 18th). There a couple other years with highs in the low single digits below zero: Feb 47, 55, 59, Jan 77, and others. The records appear to go back to 1945.

(Reuters) – A North Atlantic current flowing into the Arctic Ocean is warmer than for at least 2,000 years in a sign that global warming is likely to bring ice-free seas around the North Pole in summers, a study showed.

Scientists said that waters at the northern end of the Gulf Stream, between Greenland and the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, averaged 6 degrees Celsius (42.80F) in recent summers, warmer than at natural peaks during Roman or Medieval times.

“The temperature is unprecedented in the past 2,000 years,” lead author Robert Spielhagen of the Academy of Sciences, Humanities and Literature in Mainz, Germany, told Reuters of the study in Friday’s edition of the journal Science.

The summer water temperatures, reconstructed from the makeup of tiny organisms buried in sediments in the Fram strait, have risen from an average 5.2 degrees Celsius (41.36F) from 1890-2007 and about 3.4C (38.12F) in the previous 1,900 years.

The findings were a new sign that human activities were stoking modern warming since temperatures are above past warm periods linked to swings in the sun’s output that enabled, for instance, the Vikings to farm in Greenland in Medieval times.

“We found that modern Fram Strait water temperatures are well outside the natural bounds,” Thomas Marchitto, of the University of Colorado at Boulder, one of the authors, said in a statement.

The Fram strait is the main carrier of ocean heat to the Arctic.

    ICE-FREE OCEAN

The authors wrote that the warming temperatures “are presumably linked to the Arctic amplification of global warming” and that the warming “is most likely another key element in the transition to a future ice-free Arctic Ocean.”

Ice on the Arctic Ocean shrank to its lowest on record in 2007 and many experts expect the ocean will be ice-free in summers in coming decades, a threat to the hunting livelihoods of indigenous peoples and to creatures such as polar bears.

The Arctic is heating up twice as fast as the global average as part of a trend the U.N. panel of climate scientists blames on a build-up of greenhouse gases from mankind’s use of fossil fuels in power plants, factories and cars.

The shrinking of reflective ice and snow in the Arctic region exposes water or ground which are darker colored and so soak up more heat from the sun, amplifying warming.

try teaching adults… its not so easy is it… with all their preconceived notions of this glo-bull warming…they might actually tell you to go pound sand…
your precious ego would be unable to handle the rejection…
…as evidenced by your coercive behavior here on this forum…

    ===============================================
“…I know this Rob….you are afraid of data. I will leave a few seats open for you and your crew…”

*You are out of your mind… I posted data sources that you ignore time and time again. The fact that you won’t discuss it, shows how immature you really are…how closed minded you are to other opinions…

guess what… the science is not settled… although you would like it to be…

you come in here like a bully… pushing your way around… refusing to discuss anything but your convictions that the sky is falling…

*Highly unlikely, that I would subject myself to your narrow mind
    and world view
    =================================================

“I will keep you in my prayers.”

*Please don’t… you are not a priest… and it deeply offends me…

    ====================================================

“you are so afraid of discussion.”

    * Quite the opposite… you repost the same tired data, tainted by by flawed “science”, promulgated by the UN IPCC, Hansen’s NASA, USGS,
tree ring Briffa, Mann’s flawed “hockey stick”… Phil Jones and the email scandal….the BBC..the list is endless…

*it’s madness… all to get a chance at the tit for government funding…$$$

*you “greenies” are sick individuals. So eager to control.
History is littered with your kind… and none of it…is any good.

*you advance a scam that has holes punched all over it. Think swiss cheese…
then you get angry and demand to meet them face to face….

So you can punch me… instead of your keyboard….??

*You haven’t even discussed anything I have posted… you dismiss it out of hand you have engaged in zero discussion yourself… but will project your anger on me..I don’t think so…
    ==================================================

“…January…record low ice in the Arctic….”

*It seems… not everyone agrees with your biased views…

#”According to US Navy PIPS2 maps, the area of thick Arctic ice has more than doubled, and the volume of Arctic ice has increased by 26% – since 2008.”

    =================================================
    This really bothers me…

Why are you so interested in meeting face to face… are you a perv?

Why do you take such a threatening stance towards me…??

I have presented evidence… which you, and your inflated ego choose not to discuss… you are dismissive… and then demand to meet me face to face…
… for what….so you can physically harm me..??

You and your pal James Hansen going to take me out for a little ride??

Spoken like a true coward. I have given data….and you use inflammatory and tough talk. You insult my profession and you cast dispersions on me without knowing me, knowing my work. I just wonder if you would do it face to face? So, you talk about “pervs” and other nonsense, probably because you are afraid to speak face to face. Fine. I figured as much. I don’t have an ego..I have a passion for people and the natural world.

Never once did I engage in the name calling/nasty talk. I just want to know…do you like to hide behind computer screens. I wrote a calm, reasoned post on January 25th. You decided to go back to name calling. Sad.

A man who uses tough talk should be willing to meet those they cast stones at in person. So, I guess you prefer to operate…not like a man.

Lastly, I don’t sweat guys like you and I don’t run and hide because you call me retarded or socialist (why in God’s name you use those terms defies common sense). And…I asked nicely in one post, why do you operate in such a vile realm? Why do you name call? You never answered. Typically of folks like you.

I am a loving father of two, dedicated my life to my community and school and don’t hide behind vile terminology or a computer screen. I will pray for you because I believe in a forgiving God. My neighbor who I have watched numerous times has Down Syndrome. I am sickened by the word “retard.” That is why I will pray for you…that you receive some courage and learn to speak calmly and openly without all the nasty talk. Any time, any place. Never forget that.

    God Bless, John F. Borowski

“…I just wonder if you would do it face to face? So, you talk about “pervs” and other nonsense, probably because you are afraid to speak face to face….”

–Your demands to meet me face to face are odd and disturbing…

–again this is chat forum… if you can’t express yourself here…
–what makes you think you can express yourself… face to face…?
–The only thing a face to face will allow.. is you to assault me.. or worse…

    “…Spoken like a true coward…”

“…probably because you are afraid to speak face to face…”

“…A man who uses tough talk should be willing to meet those they cast stones at in person…”

–Oh yeah sure… and you’re peaceful… about as peaceful as an ALF activist
–at the grand opening of a new ski lodge in Colorado…
–I made my point about you… and you have proven me correct…
    –you’re a violent extremist… thank you

    “…I don’t have an ego…”

–Liar, Liar…Denial is more than a river in Egypt…

–with statements like these…that you have posted…

    “…Like I said before…some of you just don’t know or understand science…”

–what an egotistical snob… I know nothing according to you….
    –and you know everything…? Please John…keep dreaming…
    –Again… not surprising coming from you… that’s all… EGO
–Are you the only one who can decipher this data for us…? No you’re not…
–your allegation that we are dumber than you… has not been missed…

“…Why has Exxon and the American Petroleum Institute spent money to debunk climate change?…”

    –…oohhh…evil conspiracy… Huh.. John?

–But NASA, through James Hansen, is handing out tax payer funded alarmist –and other “greenie” literature to schools advancing your agenda
    –is not troublesome…?

    –Can you say double standard…John?

“…Yes, many of you deniers are just lining up for your servitude as slaves in the new world order of Exxon, Comcast, Monsanto and Dow….”

“…They are afraid. Sadly…they have lackeys, like many on this list…who shill for them, free of charge, with no facts/all rhetoric….?

–more evil right wing conspiracies… you accuse us of being lackeys?
–But John…I thought you were so much better than us.. you’re really not –being judgmental now are you…?

“….These facts…may not be convenient to your beliefs/agenda: you are entitled to your opinions, but…not entitled to make up your own facts….”

–I haven’t made up any facts…. but your facts come from people who have –been caught exaggerating their alarmist claims….
–And thank you for giving me permission to my opinions… and then faulting –me for having a opinion… which conflicts with your views…

    –Can you say egotistical..John?
–Your EGO is threatened and you are lashing out…

“…Common sense….is not as common as I thought. Many blessings in your ignorance….”

    –Haven’t called us names, huh..John?…
    – we are.. ignorant.. slaves… capitalists…exploiters…according to you..
–it sounds very marxist… very extreme…
–environmental extremists have cast these terms about, and now you are…

    “…I support Hansen’s work indeed….”

–Hansen advocates a political solution based on his prediction.
–And personally attacks those who dare question his “science.”
–and guess what John…that’s exactly what you are doing…

“…How can you justify corporations paying no income taxes? How can you justify corporate crimes?…”

–Just over the top conspiracy crap… corporate crimes…?…Seriously?
–And this is what you teach your kids.? That’s scary…just scary….

“…Many of you need therapy or…you need to stop reading Climate Depot..”

–More words meant to smear me from the alarmist in chief…
–Why are you afraid of an alternate news source…?

–Well given your conspiracy theories against government, capitalism… and –the evil corporations.. its not surprising.. If you could shut down these sites.. –you would… So why are you afraid of this information…?
–The cat is out of the bag… your data is flawed and “cooked” to scare people..
–The emperor has no clothes and now you want to shut down information
–and only allow people to have your message…
–oh yeah… that’s perfectly normal behavior…? Must protect your EGO..

“…Plus…is it not socialist to give massive subsidies to coal, oil and gas interests?…”

–Socialist…? You mean like how the government…the same government that –you have just called socialist… gives money to scientists and schools for
–”research”… You mean that kind of socialism…?

“…I favor carbon taxes. I see mass extinction of species looming across the planet. Are you or anyone else going to deny that? I see our forests worldwide (primary forests) butchered…”

–You favor carbon taxes..will you tax yourself.? Mr. carbon based life form..
–carbon forms the basis of our life… and you favor taxing it..? Very odd

    –What a ridiculous premise…carbon taxes…
–Mass extinctions of species are looming? Which species..?

–You’re awfully upset by the forests being “butchered”… I’ve only heard –extremists like ALF describe it that way… Do you support ALF…?

“…Yes, I agreed with the invasion of Iraq….based on the data we were told. It was precautionary…until I (and all citizens) saw the data behind the spin. Then, I was disgusted by the lies…”

–Data behind the spin…?? I’m speechless… you rank right up there with
    –the birther’s… and the truther’s…tinfoil hat time…wow…
–Earth to John… come in please…

    –Which lies were they??? … I need a laugh….

“…Wake up Rob…learn some data/stop practicing all the witty name calling (you are not very good at it)…”

    –I have posted data… a lot of data… from numerous sources…
–you just choose to ignore it…and then ridicule me for not having data…
–that coincides with your fallacy of glo-bull warming…

–The witty name calling must be good… because its the only thing that –bothers you.. and keeps you coming back…

    “…Lastly, I don’t sweat guys like you…”

    –And yet, you are…

Rob you are a coward. Calling some a retard, chicken little is witty? I don’t sweat cowards who hide behind a screen, use insults and are not open to any data other than their own. Blessings, John F. Borowski
