My time as a news and current affairs anchor at the BBC was characterised by weak leadership and poor direction from the top, but hand in hand with this went the steady growth of political correctness.

Indeed, it was almost certainly the Corporation’s unchallengeable PC culture that made strong leadership impossible.

Leadership — one person being in charge, trusting his or her own judgment, taking a decision and telling others what to do— was shied away from in favour of endless meetings of a dozen or more people trying to arrive at some sort of consensus.

At the newsroom level it became impossible to discipline someone for basic journalistic mistakes — wrong dates, times and numbers, inaccurate on-screen captions and basic political or geographical facts — for fear of giving offence. You’d never see anyone, to use a technical term, get a b*****king.
There’d be whispers about them. They might even get a black mark at the annual appraisal with their line manager. Sometimes, they might even be promoted to a position in which they could do less harm.
But what really concerned me was when the culture of political correctness began to influence what appeared on the screen. Soon after I started on News 24 in 2003, the aircraft carrier Ark Royal returned from the Gulf to a traditional welcome from families and friends at Portsmouth. TV reporters closed in to interview crew members, the vast majority of whom were men.

Lebanon’s President Michel Suleiman appointed Hezbollah-backed Najib Mikati to lead the country’s government, seen by supporters of caretaker prime minister Saad Hariri’s Western-backed Future Movement as a power grab by the Iranian-backed Shiite movement.

The appointment was made on a so-called “Day of Rage,” announced by supporters of Hariri.

Only in the warped mind of a liberal would Manning be considered a “patriot.”

(Daily Caller)- While much of America views Bradley Manning, the private first class who has been accused of leaking secret documents to WikiLeaks, as a traitor, he does have some defenders who consider him nothing less than a patriot.

“He was trying to help the country,” said Kevin Zeese, a member of the steering committee of the Bradley Manning Support Network.

Zeese tells the story of Manning as a loss of innocence tale. The story of Manning, he says, is about “a guy who believes in America,” enlists in the army, and gets to Iraq only to discover that the country has, in Zeese’s words, “gone off track.” If he doesn’t do anything, Zeese said, imagining Manning’s decision-making process, he’d be “complicit.”

“So instead he decides to get evidence out to the media,” Zeese continues. Zeese went on to point out that he could have sold the classified files for a lot of money to unfriendly nations. “That’s what traitors would do.”

“Real political leadership,” Zeese explained, “would acknowledge Manning for these actions and use it as an opportunity to begin a debate on what kind of foreign policy the U.S. should have.”

“He’s a patriot. Not a traitor,” Zeese proclaimed.

Furthering the love-fest, MSNBC host Dylan Ratigan implicitly compared Manning to human rights activists on Monday, saying during a discussion about Manning’s situation: “They love to make movies about Nelson Mandela in South Africa.”

“He’s the guy who should be in the gallery when Obama gives his State of the Union speech,” said Zeese, “as a guy who really took risks to make our country better.”

It sounds as though Manning, who is currently being held in solitary confinement at Quantico Marine Corps base in Virginia, has come to be seen as something of a folk hero. But Zeese shrugs off such a description.

“I like the word patriot better than hero,” he said via e-mail. “If he did what he is accused of he took risks with his personal liberty, knew he risked prosecution in order to make sure the American people knew the truth about U.S. foreign policy.”

(Reuters) – A powerful roadside bomb killed nine civilians and wounded two others in Thailand’s restive deep south on Tuesday, an attack blamed on separatist insurgents, police said.

The victims were all Buddhists and were travelling in a pickup truck to hunt wild pigs when the bomb exploded in Yala, one of three predominantly Muslim provinces plagued by violence since a separatist rebellion resurfaced seven years ago.

The incident was the second major attack in six days and will be a blow to the government and security forces, which say violence has reduced significantly in recent months, citing tighter security and successful public relation campaigns.

Four soldiers were killed and at least five others wounded on Wednesday when rebels armed with grenades and assault rifles stormed an army outpost in Narathiwat. Thai media said at least 20 rifles were stolen in the raid.

Police said Tuesday’s bomb was planted in the road and detonated remotely by cellphone, destroying the truck. Roadside blasts are common in the rubber-rich region, but military and police patrols are usually the targets.

(News Core)- The Moscow airport blast that killed 35 people and wounded more than 100 others may have involved a female suicide bomber from Russia’s predominantly Muslim North Caucasus, Russian news agency RIA Novosti quoted a security source as saying Tuesday.

“The explosion occurred the moment the presumed female suicide bomber opened her bag,” the state-run agency quoted the unnamed security official as saying.

“The terrorist was accompanied by a man. He was standing beside her and [the blast] tore off his head,” it added.

(CNSNews.com) – Statistics compiled over the past decade show that the number of abortions in the United States has dropped precipitously since the early 1980s, but the procedure still remains a prevalent form of birth control in this country and around the world.

According to the U.S .Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, there were 846,181 abortions in the U.S. in 2006, the latest year for which government records are available.

The pro-abortion rights Alan Guttmacher Institute reports that there have been nearly 50 million abortions performed since 1973, the year the Supreme Court issued the Roe v. Wade decision ushering in legal abortion nationwide.

In 2008, Guttmacher says, there were 1.2 million “legally terminated pregnancies” in the United States, based on reports complied from state and local health agencies — down from 1.3 million the year previous.

According to Guttmacher, 35 percent of all U.S. women will have had an abortion by age 45.

Guttmacher also reports that 93 percent of all abortions occur for “social reasons” such as a mother’s decision that the child is unwanted or “inconvenient.”

There is a specter haunting the U.S. It is “one of the things that keeps me up at night,” Attorney General Eric Holder said last month. North Carolina Representative Sue Myrick, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, has warned President Obama that “there is no doubt” the problem has become “a global threat.” The incoming chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, Peter King, plans to convene hearings next month on the danger “that threatens the security of us all.”

In the wake of the Tucson, Ariz., tragedy, you might think that such high-profile alarm would center on the shortcomings of America’s mental-health system or the inadequacy of the country’s gun laws. You would be mistaken. Instead, some members of the political class remain fixated on what they regard as a greater national emergency: the purported rise of “homegrown” Islamic terrorists. They point to a string of examples of jihadist activity by U.S. citizens of Muslim faith: the Somali-born Portland, Ore., man who tried to detonate a dud car bomb planted by the FBI at a December tree-lighting ceremony; last summer’s failed Times Square bombing by a naturalized Pakistani; the 14 men charged last August with providing support to Islamist militants in Somalia.

And then there’s Anwar al-Awlaki, the Yemen-based Internet imam late of Falls Church, Va., who intelligence officials say now acts as a regional commander for al-Qaeda, with the charge of recruiting impressionable American Muslims to take up arms against their country. In the eyes of some, al-Awlaki and his ilk represent the vanguard of an even more sinister trend: the growing “radicalization” of the estimated 5 million Muslims living in the U.S. “Radicalization is taking place inside America,” Myrick wrote in her letter to Obama. “The strikingly accelerated rate of American Muslims arrested for involvement in terrorist activities since May 2009 makes this fact self-evident.”

Actually, it doesn’t. Though acts of violent extremism by U.S. Muslims appear to have grown, their potency has not. American Muslims remain more moderate, diverse and integrated than the Muslim populations in any other Western society. Despite the efforts of al-Qaeda propagandists like al-Awlaki, the evidence of even modest sympathy for the enemy existing inside the U.S. is minuscule. The paranoia about homegrown terrorism thus vastly overstates al-Qaeda’s strength and reflects our leaders’ inability to make honest assessments about the true threats to America’s security.

Was Genghis Khan history’s greenest conqueror? — Mother Nature Network

Genghis Khan’s Mongol invasion in the 13th and 14th centuries was so vast that it may have been the first instance in history of a single culture causing man-made climate change, according to new research out of the Carnegie Institution’s Department of Global Ecology, reports Mongabay.com.

Unlike modern day climate change, however, the Mongol invasion actually cooled the planet, effectively scrubbing around 700 million tons of carbon from the atmosphere.

So how exactly did Genghis Khan, one of history’s cruelest conquerors, earn such a glowing environmental report card? The reality may be a bit difficult for today’s environmentalists to stomach, but Khan did it the same way he built his empire — with a high body count.

Over the course of the century and a half run of the Mongol Empire, about 22 percent of the world’s total land area had been conquered and an estimated 40 million people were slaughtered by the horse-driven, bow-wielding hordes. Depopulation over such a large swathe of land meant that countless numbers of cultivated fields eventually returned to forests.

In other words, one effect of Genghis Khan’s unrelenting invasion was widespread reforestation, and the re-growth of those forests meant that more carbon could be absorbed from the atmosphere.

“It’s a common misconception that the human impact on climate began with the large-scale burning of coal and oil in the industrial era,” said Julia Pongratz, who headed the Carnegie Institution research project. “Actually, humans started to influence the environment thousands of years ago by changing the vegetation cover of the Earth’s landscapes when we cleared forests for agriculture.”

Pongratz’s study, which was completed with the help of her Carnegie colleague Ken Caldeira, as well as with German colleagues at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, measured the carbon impact of a number of historical events besides just the Mongol invasion, including the Black Death in Europe, the fall of China’s Ming Dynasty and the conquest of the Americas.

What all of these events share in common is the widespread return of forests after a period of massive depopulation, but the longevity of the Mongol invasion made it stand out as having the biggest impact on the world’s climate.

“We found that during the short events such as the Black Death and the Ming Dynasty collapse, the forest re-growth wasn’t enough to overcome the emissions from decaying material in the soil,” explained Pongratz. “But during the longer-lasting ones like the Mongol invasion . . . there was enough time for the forests to re-grow and absorb significant amounts of carbon.”

At the White House State Dinner for Chinese President Hu Jintao, pianist Lang Lang played, among other ditties, the song “My Motherland

My Motherland was written for the 1956 Chinese war film “Battle on Shangganling Mountain,” about the Korean War, in which the People’s Republic of China soldiers are the heroes and the bad guys are Americans

Though there was no lyrical accompaniment when Lang Lang performed the song last week, one lyric translates as “When friends are here, there is fine wine /But if the wolves (or jackals) come /What greets it is the hunting rifle.”

…White House spokesman Tommy Vietor told ABC News that “any suggestion that this was an insult to the United States is just flat wrong. As Lang Lang has stated before, he plays this song regularly because it is one of his favorite Chinese melodies, which is very widely known and popular in China for its melody. Lang Lang played the song without lyrics or reference to any political themes during the entertainment portion of the State Dinner. He simply stated the song’s title and noted it was well known in China.”

(NY Times)- Since the government took over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, taxpayers have spent more than $160 million defending the mortgage finance companies and their former top executives in civil lawsuits accusing them of fraud. The cost was a closely guarded secret until last week, when the companies and their regulator produced an accounting at the request of Congress.

The bulk of those expenditures — $132 million — went to defend Fannie Mae and its officials in various securities suits and government investigations into accounting irregularities that occurred years before the subprime lending crisis erupted. The legal payments show no sign of abating.

Documents reviewed by The New York Times indicate that taxpayers have paid $24.2 million to law firms defending three of Fannie’s former top executives: Franklin D. Raines, its former chief executive; Timothy Howard, its former chief financial officer; and Leanne Spencer, the former controller.

Late last year, Randy Neugebauer, Republican of Texas and now chairman of the oversight subcommittee of the House Financial Services Committee, requested the figures from the Federal Housing Finance Agency. It is the regulator charged with overseeing the mortgage finance companies and acts as their conservator, trying to preserve the company’s assets on behalf of taxpayers.

“One of the things I feel very strongly about is we need to be doing everything we can to minimize any further exposure to the taxpayers associated with these companies,” Mr. Neugebauer said in an interview last week.

JOS, Nigeria (AP)– Authorities say machete-wielding attackers have killed six people in two attacks on Christian villages in central Nigeria.

The attacks occurred Sunday night south of Jos with attackers armed with machetes and firearms targeting two Christian villages.

Violence between Christians and Muslims has claimed more than 500 lives over the last year in Jos and surrounding areas.

Officials say the raid was in retaliation for a New Year’s Eve attack on a van full of Muslims returning from a wedding that left at least eight people dead.

For the record: Profiling for terrorists is bad. Profiling for illegal immigrants is bad. Profiling for Obama’s citizenship status is good.
