Pew Poll: By 59% to 27% Margin Egyptians Would Rather be Ruled by Islamic Fundamentalists Over Modernizers…
Plus 82% support stoning adulterers and 54% say suicide bombings can be justified. Oh yeah, this is going to end well.
(Washington Examiner)- Last year the Pew Research Center Global Attitudes Project conducted a survey of opinion in several Muslim countries. The subject was the proper role of Islam in politics and society. One of the countries surveyed was Egypt, and among other discoveries, the Pew researchers found that 84 percent of Egyptians favor the death penalty for people who leave the Muslim religion.
In another survey, Pew found that 90 percent of Egyptians say they believe in freedom of religion. Pew also found that a majority of Egyptians think democracy, with protections of free speech and assembly, is “preferable to any other kind of government.”
How can those attitudes fit together in a democratic post-Mubarak Egypt? It’s no wonder so many people can’t figure out what is next.
The Pew survey found wide streams of opinion in Egypt that seem at the very least inhospitable to democracy. When asked which side they would take in a struggle between “groups who want to modernize the country [and] Islamic fundamentalists,” 59 percent of Egyptians picked the fundamentalists, while 27 percent picked the modernizers. In a country in which the army will likely play a deciding role in selecting the next political leadership, just 32 percent believe in civilian control of the military. And a majority, 54 percent, support making segregation of men and women in the workplace the law throughout Egypt.
There’s more. When asked whether suicide bombing can ever be justified, 54 percent said yes (although most believe such occasions are “rare.”) Eighty-two percent supported stoning for those who commit adultery.

The MB and AQ are heroes in Egypt. And Israel and the US are hated like no other. Unlike the Iranians and Southern Sudanese, these pinheads are running towards Sharia, not away from it. They’ll just end up replacing a dictator with another dictator. Democracy doesn’t do anything but allow Muslims to vote in their masters. See Gaza and Iran for examples. And once we leave Iraq, Iran will become its master also.
That poll is accurate. 30% of the people of Eqypt are illiterate. 40% live on two dollars a day. Unemployment is rife. Food shortages are common. Eqypt is imploding. With a fecless, clueless leadership in DC, the MB knows that it is their time to strike.
The rise of the modern-day Khalifa is in its acendancy. Its going to happen, as western leadership fades into history, Islam will fill the vacuum left by the west and the elections of one clueless western government after another.
Its the beginnings of birth pains. The whore of Babylon is about to give birth. The result will be a world-wide conflagration…possibly nuclear… that begins in and ends in the ME.

anti-neocon: No, you haven’t understood this point, if you think the rest of the poll is encouraging or not so troubling:
To Moslems, Sharia IS the ‘path,’ ‘the way’, the life all should and must live in ‘islam’ (which means in Arabic, literally, ‘submission’ — to ‘allah’ and its self-proclaimed ‘prophet’, Mahomet). Therefore, under ‘islam’, the Sharia IS ‘free’, the judiciary is ‘free’ because ‘islam’ is the path to fullness of life. These Egyptians are not really being inconsistent to their way of thinking, which is islamic. They have an entirely different concept of ‘democracy’ (demos, the mob, the people) and this demos must ‘submit’ to the Sharia as decreed by ‘allah’ and its ‘prophet.’ If you read that article and the major comment just below it, you’ll see that commenter understands Sharia.
I read that as the current government was moving towards a more capitalistic society and less of a nanny-state that this is what was upsetting a lot of folks. So it does not surprise me that a fundamentalist islamic state would appeal to these people. They actually think that they will be taken care of…and I am sure they will…just like communism….and when the money runs out, they will all be equally dirt poor. If there is a fair amount of poverty now, just wait, it will soon be communal.

It’s true. Unfortunately, the majority of the Egyptian people will likely choose new leaders that will use religion to enslave them. It’ll be their choice. Hopefully, they’ll still be able to stand up and call for change and freedom when they get tired of that tyranny, too.
Except Sharia will mandate anyone who opposes the future regime to be put to death, because you cannot challenge the authority of Allah… who somehow (even though he is an unknowable and unattached god) runs countries that have Sharia.
