Next month his beloved Virginia Military Institute will be convening a celebration commemorating the 1300th anniversary of the invasion and occupation of Spain under the Muslim warlord Tariq ibn Ziyad in 711 A.D. The March 23–25 celebration entitled “711–2011: East Meets West” and organized by VMI’s Center for Leadership and Ethics, is scheduled to feature standard Muslim apologists Reza Aslan and Akbar Ahmed. VMI Superintendent Gen. J.H. Binford Peay has even filmed an invitation to the celebration.
No word if VMI’s World War II commemoration will be entitled “Germany meets Poland, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Belgium, France, Norway, The Netherlands and Russia”.
Event organizers describe the event as follows:
We celebrate the 1300th anniversary of Tariq ibn Ziyad’s crossing of the Straits of Gibraltar, setting into motion the fusion between two worlds. The agenda will tell the vital story of the achievements when Muslims, Christians, and Jews thrived side by side in Western Europe, building a society that lit the Dark Ages. Experts will discuss how to transform education, promote tolerance, political reform, and advance human development so that we can emulate the spirit and triumphs of the early years.
Reza Aslan is scheduled to speak on a panel entitled “‘Al-Andalus’ — an ageless Model of Tolerance”, but it is doubtful that Aslan and his co-panelists will be discussing the widespread persecution of Christians and Jews under Muslim rule that led to the establishment of an entirely new class of Roman Catholic martyrs, “the Cordoba martyrs”, or the 1066 massacre of Jews and crucifixion their leader Joseph ha-Nagid in “tolerant” Cordoba.

I’m a VMI grad and a Veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan. I contacted VMI with my objection to this “celebration” and I spoke to a Navy Captain on the staff. Apparently there has been a lot of feedback from VMI Alumni on this subject and outrage at this celereation they are promoting.
She agreed that the term “celebrate” should not have been used as a description but that this was a discussion of the movement of Islam into Europe and the good and bad associated with it. This will be an open discussion of both points of view which in itself isn’t a bad thing and could be educational if it is open and honest.
As for some of the name calling from some on this blog I think that is uncalled for. VMI has a proud tradition that no other military school in the world can compare to with such Alumni as George C. Marshall, George S. Patton, Chesty Puller and countless others who have served this country proudly and some like me who continue to serve. One thing I have always been proud of as a VMI Alumni is the stance my school has taken on principal. VMI fought the admittance of females based on principal, stood up to the ACLU when they came at them for having prayer in the chow hall and they continue to enforce one of the strongest honor codes in the country. If there is one school that has not given in to PC it’s VMI.
Yesterday I reported on an upcoming conference at the Virginia Military Institute celebrating the Islamic invasion and brutal 781-year occupation of Spain entitled “711-2011: East meets West“. Apparently stung by our report and a deluge of angry callers this morning, VMI is furiously scrubbing the “celebration” language from all the event materials and trying to portray this as a military and academic event to irate callers, who are reportedly being told that it never was a “celebration” and that Big Peace has deliberately misconstrued the event.
But if this event was never intended as a “celebration” of the invasion and brutal (one could rightfully claim genocidal) occupation of Spain by Tariq ibn Ziyad, as the school is now claiming, why was the event listed as a “celebration”? Yesterday, the event announcement on VMI’s website read:

Peay is a smart man and he would not do anything bad for VMI. The problem is ignorant people like Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer. Yes, they are some bad people who happen to be Muslim and we should fight them. But accept the good and reject the bad.

You are all so far off base. Al-Andalus –under Islamic rule–was the golden age of Jewish culture and civilization. Please folks, read your history books. Were it not for the Arabs in Al-Andalus translating and assimilating Greek knowledge, you would not have had the European Renaissance… or any of the achievements that came from that period. Al-Andalus was when Muslims, Christians and Jews lived in peaceful harmony. That is something to celebrate!!! Come on folks, get past these present day smear campaigns that hurt everyone.
