Boehner: “Read My Lips — We Are Going to Cut Spending”

For some reason, invoking George Herbert Bush’s notorious line fails to induce confidence.

(CNNMoney) — House Republicans on Thursday continued on their mission to cut billions of dollars from the current year’s budget. “When we say we are going to cut spending, read my lips: We are going to cut spending,” said House Speaker John Boehner on Thursday. He added that the House wouldn’t pass a budget that doesn’t cut spending, fueling new speculation of a possible government shutdown when current stop-gap funding measures run out March 4.

Republicans have vowed to cull $60 billion from the fiscal 2011 budget, in their first big opportunity to make good on campaign promises to rid Washington of mounting deficits and government spending. . . .

Lawmakers also on Thursday defunded the Federal Communications Commission’s efforts to enact new so-called “Net neutrality” rules, which give the agency regulatory power over Internet service providers. Republican lawmakers also agreed to cut funding to eight “czars,” or top presidential or federal agency advisers who aren’t confirmed by the Senate, including the pay czar charged with watching executive compensation at TARP-funded banks. . . .

    They’re full of sh*t.

Read Paul Krugman’s column in the NYT today. For once, I have to say I agree with that guy.

The Republican House is prancing around declaring that they’re going to reign in spending by cutting the WIC program and Liheap when we all know that it’s healthcare.

To be frank, we need the “death panels” to stop all the Medicare/Medicaid spending on ridiculous procedures that allow doctors and health care providers to bilk us out of billions each year.

We don.t need death panels what we need is medicaid reigned in I worked as an ER nurse for 17 years. People on Medicaid abuse the system so bad. They go to the ER for things that any normal person would not go to the Dr for. There have been maany days I went to work not feeling well and these people come in and it is all I can do not to tell them to Get Out Of My ER

It is sad when the best they can do is 60 billion cut from a 1400 billion deficit. So the very best the fiscal conservatives can accomplish is not even as aggressive as the presidents budget. There is something so amazing about the air in dc that it destroys all conservative goals.

    Its called “special interests”…

and is exactly how these politicians become wealthy beyond what they are
    paid by us, the taxpayers…

the politicians have a vested interest in defending these “special interests”
because of all the money they make from it…

I’ve been getting disillusioned for a while – I am figuring that NO ONE seems to have the guts to do what is necessary, and that is to put ALL the cards on the table and just get. it. on. We are in serious trouble, and we need serious resolutions. The Republicans need to put on the table things like elimination of departments like the EPA, Education, Energy, BATFE – drop funding of EVERY community organization and special interest group – like la raza for example (let them look for community donations) – SEVERE cut backs to near elimination of foreign aid (for backwards countries focus on business development; so they can learn to grow on their own – handouts don’t work), eliminate all subsidies (if it can’t exist on its own – it shouldn’t exist) – it is absolutely time to take on an entirely new tack in slashing the budget to the bone, downsizing the federal government and re-ordering priorities……

The cuts are mostly pretty easy. It’s the political will and resolve that is difficult. but it won’t happen; since everyone inside the beltway is more concerned with personal power and maintaining their little fiefdoms.

On the States level we need a clean sweep on welfare abuses, in the capital city of my state 49% receive either total or some kind of welfare.

The nick name is “the city with the golden doors”.

The new governor is an ex RINO turned independent, he was voted in by the minorities and…family name recognition, we don’t have a prayer.

He just rescinded the e-verify of the the previous governor.

If they aren’t confirmed by the Senate, fire them. Why do we need 30+ czars anyway. Start with Kenneth Feinberg and Kevin Jennings.

    I agree Weasel Meister.
Doesn’t make me feel warm and fuzzy inside but cold and dead. Worried that he is going to follow in George H Bushes’ footsteps and not give us the cuts needed.

Never repeat a slogan or phrase that failed and use it to try instill confidence in the American Public.

    @malp1022

Call the “death panels”, call them “medicare/medicaid service reviewers”, call them whatever. The bottom line is that someone other than the doctor and patient, someone charged with saving money, will have to make decisions about what Medicare/Medicaid will pay for. And no one really likes that idea, but what else can you do?

Used to like Boehner, want to see him replaced now. He plants his feet in quicksand and always looks surprised when he starts sinking. It’s a lot easier to say what you mean, and mean what you say….and stick to it. The budget is no longer negociable.

You guys are amazing. I should never doubt the pessimism of conservatives. THEY HAVEN’T DONE ANYTHING YET. The only reason they are able to cut anything is because of Pelosi’s abdication on doing a budget and the CR being defeated in the Senate lame duck. We are on the right track.

They will propose $100 billion in cuts with the voters’ backing, Obama will balk, and the government will shut down. Do you have any idea what kind of CUT a government shut down is? (Hint: it’s a lot.) Not to mention the fact that Paul Ryan hasn’t even unveiled his FY 2012 budget.

Everyone needs to CHILL. Let’s be optimistic from where we have come since January 2009 and just stay on our leaders to do what they were elected to do.

You people make me sick. The first thing you do is throw your own best hopes over the side. Boo fricken Hoo. Boehner is doing nothing but cutting. He said this is just the beginning. He is in the face of Obama and the Dems. Governors across the country are opting out of Obama care. Sending back the money for high speed rail. Ohio and Wisconson are taking on the Unions big time but your not satified! All you do is sit on your ass and piss and moan because the Republicans aren’t doing enough or they aren’t doing something fast enough. The government is a juggernaut and you can’t stop it on a dime. If you did you could screw things up also.

Did you ever stop to think maybe he used Bush’s “read my lips because he knows the standard he will be held to and expects to be. Boehner’s rich. Unlike most politicians he was rich before he went to Washinton. He doesn’t need this shit. He does it because he is a decent man. Is he perfect? Are you? I wouldn’t blame him if he said the Hell with it and went home for all the appreciation he gets.

He told his fellow Republican congressman to keep their noses clean or get out. The married shirtless Congressman Lee of Craigs List fame was handled swiftly and discretely. You piss me off. I need a drink.

House votes to deny funds to Planned parenthood. Not enough
House votes to defund Czars. Not enough.

Vacous arguement consists of the Senate will stop them so it’s only for show. What the heck do you want them to do not pass this stuff since it’s only for show?
