House Republicans Say They Will Shut Down Gov’t by Voting Against Spending Bill Unless Planned Parenthood Is Defunded…

Heroes.

(TPM) — A pro-life leader in the House says he and many other Republicans will vote against legislation to fund the government through September if a series of anti-abortion riders, which already passed the House, aren’t included in the final bill.

“I’m going to push so hard to make sure those are all in there,” Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) told The Takeaway. “You can’t back off, from a human rights perspective. If you do so you facilitate the demise of hundreds of thousands of children.”

Smith said several Republicans would defect on the spending bill if the abortion riders are removed. He focused specifically on one amendment, authored by Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), eliminating federal funds for Planned Parenthood.

You people are legitimately disgraceful. Defund NPR/PBS? Why?

I guess thats ok but subsidizing for a bunch of dumb rednecks to drive 500 times in a circle so other dumb rednecks can oogle at it for 10 hours is a good use of money for this country.

Also, unless anyone here is close to a millionaire, the loss of collective bargaining or public/private employees will most likely lead to further detrimental legislation that will affect you. Does no one here have a small concept such as ‘foresight’.

The words ‘legitmately’ and ‘disgraceful’ are self-explanatory. Personally, I mean it to show that you are a homegrown embarassment, incapable of rational thought processes, easily riled and mobilized while supremely ignorant of any view that doesn’t align with the fabricated, unreliable sexist religious texts.

Further, I find that most people who use Judeo-Christian biblical text to warrant validity to their arguments against abortion aren’t very knowledgeable in the book they tout as supreme law. Nor are they aware of its history in being put together. Further, most people just pick a few lines and hot-topic passages to support their argument and ignore the rest.

Lastly, from a Scientific (that’s a word) perspective, a fetus is not a human being. It’s a fetus. There is potential that it may be a human one day. There is also potential that it is miscarried, or a myriad of other options.

    March 4, 2011 at 2:55 pm

    Uncivil & right,

Do you actually believe that companies are not makign enough to keep employees? In the years since the financial collapse, small private business have been faltering or unable to get off the ground (due to no-one lending) and major corporations, financial institutions and big business have recorded record profits. Not record profits since 2008. Ever. Record profits ever. The wealth gap in this country is at its largest since the 1920′s (we remember what happened then, right?). The upper 1% owns over 34% of the wealth.

Businesses are making money. Money, however, is going to a smaller and more lucrative few.

Also, the whole point of unions and public service was that you weren’t paid as high as the private sector. You earned less, lived more modestly but at least you had an end-date until retirement. At least you could own a home, and put food on the table and go to the doctor. And if the plutocratic elite wanted to strip you off that, you had bargaining power. This isn’t a republican or democrat issue, liberal/conservative. This is those in charge and the little guys. It’s the evaporating middle class and the newly-emerging new poor trying to keep their heads above water.

  20. KWilliams says:
    March 4, 2011 at 3:07 pm

    Rob,

So what about the dozens if not hundreds of fertilized eggs that a women flushes out of her body in her lifetime. That is technically the beginning of a fetus carrying both male and female DNA, through copulation? Not every fertilized egg, future fetus, future human ‘nests’.

Also, thats faulty logic. It is carried by a human. Doesn’t make it human. It’s not human. It has the potential to become a human being. But fetuses can not survive outside of the female body until the 3rd trimester. That doesn’t define ‘a human’. It’s a fetus.

  21. Rob says:
    March 4, 2011 at 3:08 pm

Leftists almost all seem to favor abortion. Why?

The key to understanding that is simple.

When Leftists get into absolute power as they often did in the 20th Century

we soon see what their “compassion” really adds up to.

From Stalin to Pol Pot, Leftists showed that they do not care about human life at all. Leftists murdered millions.

So what are a few unborn babies to them? A mere bagatelle!

I myself think it is patently obvious that abortion is murder.

A baby that would survive if born premature is destroyed by an abortionist…

….and we are told that no crime has been committed!

    Absurd.

    Dear Rob,

Dude! I’m sort of at a loss. Yea, I guess I’m ‘progressive’, but its a tad insulting comparing me to Stalin…..and Pol Pot (who was not at all progressive. In fact he murdered anyone who was educated in Cambodia).

“I myself think it is patently obvious that abortion is murder.” Fair enough. I may ask you though, what do you do that makes ‘Your’ opinion any more justifiable than anyone elses. Especially a woman, who in her first trimester wants to rid herself of a fetus. What do you do, good sir, that gives you the authoritative clout to declare that and then demand it be so.

It’s unsavory, its not what I lobby for if I got a female pregnant. Thats my personal choice. Ultimately, Roe and Planned Parenthood and a ton of other cases explain WHY it is not murder. If you are interested, those cases can be easily found online. The legal opinion, written by O’Connor is not that difficult to get through.

Further, one more irony. Leftists, or me want absolute power? Seems to me that most ‘leftists’ are perfectly capable of disagreeing with a woman’s choice, but controlled enough not to attempt to DICTATE to her what she should be doing with her uterus. That seems like *you* want absolute control, of a woman’s body and a woman’s independant choice.

  24. KWilliams says:
    March 4, 2011 at 3:17 pm

Also, that thing about fertilized eggs being flushed away during a woman’s period is true, and was partly in jest. I don’t through that forward for any legitimate argument.

I think actually that George Carlin said that first. He also said, “Isn’t it ironic that most of hte people against abortion, are people you wouldn’t want to f*ck in the first place.” Once again, thats a joke. It’s funny though.

    Mr. Retired Army Officer,

NPR and PBS, although viewed as having a liberal slant is incredibly beneficial and diverse in what they offer. True, maybe the warbler documentary doesn’t appeal to you. Fair enough. Similarly, federal funding only provides around 1/4 of the revenue to keep them afloat. The rest comes from ‘Viewers like You.’

I think its fair to say the defunding these stations are not related to the budget, since I pointed out earlier, the same Congress wanted and kept tax-payer money to be given to NASCAR, which provides zero value its almost staggering. In thel ong run, it won’t matter since it won’t be defunded anyway. It’s just another attack against things that are perceived as ‘liberal’. Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, NOVA and Frontline aren’t liberal. They aren’t conservative either. They are educational entertainment.

  35. KWilliams says:

That isn’t productive to discourse and conversation.

Armed Forces advertising is needed in NASCAR to help with enlistment which is low most likely because of the current administrations outstanding support of the military.

  37. KWilliams says:
    March 4, 2011 at 3:40 pm

There’s a thing called ROTC, which goes to campuses to recruit educated youngsters. Also, tv advertisements that are designed to lure young men and women to sign a contract with the armed forces. A multi-million dollar emblem on a racing piece of steel isn’t doing much.

  38. KWilliams says:
    March 4, 2011 at 3:41 pm

Also, I’m pretty sure recruitment is low because young people don’t want to go to war. Not because they weren’t tipped off about the military opportunities by Dale Ernheardt, Jr.

Well Mike R., well have to agree to disagree. I still doubt nascar ad’s do anything for enlistment rates. Further, I’ve only heard of 2 schools not allowing ROTC, and one of them just allowed them back after 14 years. Fact of the matter is that people don’t want to go to war. They don’t believe in this war. Iraq is in shambles. Afganhistan pulsates the same neverending vibes as Vietnam.

    Um Mr. Uncivil,

Thats not what I meant by plutocractic elite. Yea, some unions are too powerful, but when you are talking about teachers educating your children, and policemen and firemen as integrel members of our community, I side with them. I side with Wisconsin blue-collar workers. I don’t side with a scumbag governer grovelling at the heels of the Koch brothers who doled out 140m in corporate handouts before attempting to strip collective bargaining rights from a group of people who already said they’d pay more into their benefits.

  43. mike r. says:
    March 4, 2011 at 3:58 pm

Even if ROTC is allowed on every campus in America there is still low enlistment.Somehow we must do something to encourage people to enlist and help relieve our soldiers, some who have done many tours.

  44. Beth says:

    To KWlliams–

Arguing that because miscarriages occur, it’s okay to abort a fetus (which has all the DNA it needs to mature from embryo to fetus to newborn to child to teenager to adult to senior citizen) is like saying that because people die natural deaths it’s okay to murder someone.

  45. KWilliams says:
    March 4, 2011 at 4:02 pm

    Mike,

What part of American citizens do not want to sign up for war isn’t really clear? The country is in two unpopular, stagnant wars. Unless, people wanna kick off the draft again (which I’m sure many here wouldn’t mind), no amount of advertisements are going to change things.

The youth generation these days are fairly well-informed. After the initial 9/11 attacks for a few years, enlistment peaked. It’s been on a very steady decline for the past 5 years. The wars themselves, Wikileaks, Abu Ghraib are monumental issues which a few dollars thrown at NASCAR events with taxpayer money isn’t going to fix.

I’d say the most patriotic thing to be done would be to recall many of these men and women home. Bring them home to their families and save the 1 MILLION dollars a year it costs to keep each soldier overseas.

  46. mike r. says:
    March 4, 2011 at 4:14 pm

Might not fix it but it sure can’t hurt. Any benefit at all helps America. How does funding to planned parenthood help America? Abortion would still be legal as far I can tell.

  47. KWilliams says:
    March 4, 2011 at 4:20 pm

Even if abortion is not federally funded, it still won’t be illegal. To make it illegal it would have to be overturned by the Supreme Court, which it won’t. Especially since it is barred from being brought before them again (cases and controversy doctrine). All it will do is make it harder for a woman to afford an abortion. It won’t change much of everything outside of creating a burden on woman.

How does abortion help America? Well it takes children that would most likely be in need of government help out of the equation. It creates a relax on the welfare, ebt and other social programs. It allows a woman to continue or education or job and be a productive member of society. Plus in many inner city areas, Planned Parenthood is a place where people can go to learn about and acquire contraceptives and safe sex practices, thereby preventing many women from having to choose an abortion later down the line.

  48. Rob says:

  50. mike r. says:

  51. Beth says:
    March 4, 2011 at 4:40 pm

    @KWilliams
    How is a relax created?

Never mind. I know what you mean. If all those unwanted poor babies are aborted they don’t need WIC, etc. Hmmm…. Sounds like eugenics to me.

Let’s agree that poor people need education, job opportunities, and access to primary health care. Access to abortion is another thing altogether.

Those of us who see abortion as murder should not have to pay for it with our tax dollars. Even if efforts to remove tax support for Planned Parenthood succeed, more needs to be done.

In the days when slavery was legal, I’m sure slave owners said to abolitionists, “If you don’t like slavery, don’t buy one.”

On the day Robert E. Lee surrendered to U.S. Grant slave owners did not concede that owning slaves was immoral, but making slavery illegal helped advance the idea that it was immoral.

@KWilliams; you sure ramble on and on and on. How about answering one simple questions (succinctly, please).

Why should we, who believe abortion is murder (regardless of what you think), be forced to pay for such murder?

If you want to murder babies (and yes, we believe fetus’s are human babies) do so on your own time and with your own money. You can take it up with your maker when the time comes.

  53. KWilliams says:
    March 4, 2011 at 4:45 pm

    Mr. Mike R.

Of course, I want social programs in order to safeguard people in need from physical, financial, mental bankruptcy and ruin. I also would like a balanced budget, and trillions of dollars of debt out of Chinas hands, and probably a lot of the things everyone wants before we were all pitted against each other.

Just because I advocate social programs doesn’t mean that I advocate the abuse or the burdening of those programs. They should be in place to help people who need it. They shouldn’t to be over extended or abused or used as a fallback plan.

Yea, ‘out of the equation’ is a bit crude, but you get what I am saying. It prvents potential children who would be born into a cyclical pattern of poverty from being born. Abortion also allows women who want to obtain an education or pursue a career the freedom to do that if an accidental pregnancy occurs.

What’s an accidental pregnancy? No birth control method is 100% effective. If you copulate, even using birth control, you take the risk of the woman becoming pregnant. If you aren’t prepared for that outcome, don’t have sex.

  56. mike r. says:
    March 4, 2011 at 4:51 pm

    Sb,

Who is the great one? To be personal for a second. I read the NYT, Wa Post, Huffpo everyday. I work a job that allows that. I come here once in a blue moon to see what the Faaaaaaar other end is doing, how they are framing things, and to better understand the national politics that bewilder me everyday. I’ve been visiting here since the elections and most time leave disgusted.

As for your question, I believe that Planned Parenthood just be government funded for the same reason that I believe any social program deserves to be. It is in place to aid people who can’t help themselves. With any social program there will be people who take advantage of the system, but this is the very small minority (as infuriating as it may be to read about). Very succintly, Planned Parenthood is necessary because it helps young women who are in a vulnerable and desperate place, who are not in a position to help themselves. Like I mentioned before, most of the pro-life people I know, myself included, would not choose an abortion if our girlfriends/wives became pregnant unexpectedly. However, we understand that the option should be there for women who are in need.

  58. KWilliams says:
    March 4, 2011 at 4:54 pm

    Beth,

Is this the 1800′s. When has abstinence in the History Of Time (literally, I’m open to any time frame of human existence) been taught and obeyed. Youthful people, just like we were once, are going to engage in sex. Even protected its not 100% fail proof. That is a faulty argument for whether abortion should be funded or not? Let alone legal.

  59. KWilliams says:

Plus if you agree with the term ‘potential children’ then you agree with the word ‘potential’, which means that it is NOT yet a child. If its not a child, its not a human being at that moment. Right? Its a fetus. Therefore, its technically not murder in a legal, statutory sense.

Finally. I feel like someone is representing me in our govt. I cannot wait to vote the clown we have as president out and take his AG with him. It is unfortunate I am not able to vote in Nevada and San Fran to get rid of thoes jesters too.
I am so thankful we have Palin, Bachmann, Haley, Walker and Christy. One of thoes should be able to beat the current president.

Fair enough, MikeR.. Attempts to defund Planned Parenthood will happen, but it’ll never be illegal. Learn about the SCOTUS rulings and how it can’t be brought before the court again.

It’s just another attempt by the ignorant in this country to bring us back to the dark ages.

    @KWilliams

    K– Logic is logic, whether it’s 2011 or 1865.

Smokers are prohibited from smoking in restaurants. Why? Because second hand smoke has been determined to be a health hazard to non-smokers. One perosn’s behavior has ramifications for other people. A person smoking in a public space is now seen as a malefactor.

We live in a society convinced that sexual behavior has no ramifications for anyone other than those involved in specific and particular sexual acts. But sexual behavior does have implications for other people, most immediately the child conceived.

Why would you argue that a moral stance (promoting abstinence) needs to be predicated primarily on efficacy? Just because people lie, and always have, doesn’t make lying okay.

I’ll never forget the conversation recounted from a guy whose wife was friends with a moonbat lib, who was militant about abortion “rights.”

When the moonbat finally married and was pregnant, she was reveling in her condition — until my friend looked at her and said, “So, is YOUR baby going to be born alive?” She turned into a blubbering puddle.

    Sometimes, the lightbulb goes on.

    KWilliams,

Does a fetal baby have a unique DNA sequence from conception forward?

Science is on Life’s side dipshit. lol.

and if it wasn’t for communist meddling in America, the amount of people in need of a ‘hand out’ in perpetuity would be near non-existent.
    Why?

Because private charity, by necessity, encourages the low to take a ‘hand up’ instead of a hand out.
Private charity demands people change their behavior for the better, thus helping to perpetuate charity ‘forward’.

Government charity’s only purpose is to employ professional regreessives who must keep a flock poor to continue making a salary.

Many ‘non-profit’ charity corporations exist for the same reason. Employment for the shepherds of the dependent.

Taking children out of the equation helps America? How about responsibility for ones actions. It’s a life, now put your big boy pants on and deal with it!

Arguing that a fetus is or is not a human life is fine. It is NOT, however, the government’s business. NONE of it. The government should not be involved in funding any of it NOR should the government be involved in preventing it. When every fetus has a social security number it can become the government’s business. This has become way too big an issue when it doesn’t belong there.

“It has the potential to become a human being. But fetuses can not survive outside of the female body until the 3rd trimester”

this has been bothering me for days. this sentence ^ is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.

just because a fetus can not survive outside a mother’s body does not give anyone the justification to end it’s development= murder

Humans gestation takes between 37 and 42 weeks. this is because humans are a higher, more developed LIFE FORM then say, a dormouse; Humans have a complex cerebral cortex…

I just wish more humans would use theirs.
