Key Dem Congressman: We’re Attacking Libya for Their Oil…

Actually, America doesn’t import oil from Libya, we’re not equipped to refine the type of crude they produce, Europe on the other hand relies heavily on it. But hey, why let facts get in the way of an overused argument?

(The Hill) — The United States military action against Libya is motivated by a desire for affordable and accessible oil, a top Democrat on environmental issues said Monday.

Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.), the ranking member of the House Natural Resources Committee, said that he agreed with President Obama’s decision to launch, along with allies, attacks against Libya and its leader, Moammar Gadhafi. But Markey said the attacks were primarily motivated by oil.

“We are in Libya because of oil,” Markey said on MSNBC. “It all goes back to the 5 million barrels of oil we import from OPEC on a daily basis.”

“I think all Americans know why the president made this strike,” he said. “As long as no American soldiers are on the ground . . . then I think it’s a good decision for the president.”

What about the Prezidink making a unilateral decision to commit American military resources, in a non emergency situation, without even discussing it with Congress?

Do you think this good decision for the Prezidink, as you call it, is good for the country?

Or, perhaps you think Obozo is so infallible that whatever he does is good for the country?

    Lawless fraud.

If Europe can’t buy from Libya maybe they will start buying from our suppliers and further raise the price at the pump.

The ONLY reason we are in Libya is for oil.

A lot of people do not understand economics.
Every country in the world uses oil. Some countries can produce their own and some are not, but it doesn’t matter because everyone needs it.
Let’s say France gets all their oil from Libya. If Libya stops producing oil then France will buy oil on the world market and that will drive up the price worldwide (supply and demand). That would drive up the price the US pays for oil even though the US does not import from Libya.
Dilbert even had a comic about how oil is the ultimate fungible commodity.

first, wow, the hypocrisy of this man.

second, Libya produces barely 2 million barrels per day, nothing compared to the saudia arabia and the other ME countries.

Makes me completely rethink all the critism of Bush, many items there I agreed with, makes me think these people are not independent minded but rather like drones in their thinking.

  18. Sundance says:
    March 21, 2011 at 3:20 pm

Quit chasing the oil meme. It’s the narrative the media wants to sell. It is not the reason for France, Italy, UK and overall EU agressive action. Not at all.

Last December, Qaddafi warned EU leaders that their region may “become black because millions want to come to Europe.” As part of a reparation deal (blackmail) with Italy worth $5 billion, Qaddafi agreed in 2008 to tighten border controls. That led to the number of Libyan migrants to Italy falling to fewer than 3,000 in 2010 from a record 37,000 two years earlier. In Malta, the influx dropped from a 2008 high of 84 boats bringing 2,775 people to 2 boats carrying 47 in 2010.

What do you think Qaddafi would/will do to punish europe for their regime betrayal? Besides cutting off their oil (there are plenty of other buyers) he would open the flood gates of African immigration on europe. The Western media will generally not report this ‘gatekeeper’ position (of Qadaffi) because it does not sit well if they have to admit the “open borders” progressive immigration crap is all just so long as it’s not in my back yard.

Since mid-February, almost 225,000 people have fled Libya, with about 115,000 going to Tunisia and 102,000 to Egypt, the Geneva-based United Nations High Commission for Refugees said on March 10. About 2,000 went to Niger and 5,500 to Algeria. The distance between Valletta and Tripoli, 220 miles, is the same as that of Paris and London. That makes Malta, which joined the euro region in 2008, an entry point for those escaping the unrest in Libya.

See what happens to all of the wonderful liberal rhetoric about open immigration policies and caring for your fellow-men when they show up at your doorstep in the millions? Face it, the EU was paying off Kadaffi to keep the insufferable Africans out of the continent. The ultimate elitist xenophobia. Once they realized Quackdaffy was going to export (actually just open the gates) the rif raff the EU went postal….

Gee, I wonder what Oprah Winfrey would think of Obama if she knew the real reason for EU push toward regime change.

Actually, he is partially correct. Look at how the oil prices have risen since this started. This whole thing needs to end. I am sure there is a part of it because Gadhafi is slaughtering his own people.

  24. consumed says:
    March 21, 2011 at 3:29 pm

Well here’s another ‘fact’ for y’all – without the Libya’s oil on the world market, what do you think those Europeans would do? Go without? Yeah, right.

They’d probably do what any other free market capitalist would do – go out and try and cover what they lost. How would they do that, you ask? Probably purchase some of that other oil on the world market, perhaps even the oil we’d like to buy to feed ourselves.

See, we don’t use a lot of oil that we protect. So, you ask, why does the US fight to preserve the world’s access to oil – not just the US’. Probably because we’re sorta inefficient, need a lot, and can’t really handle other countries needing some of our liquid crack.

We’re bombing Libya because it has oil. We’re not bombing Saudi Arabia or Barhrain because they have oil. Pretty much everything we do in that part of the world is because of oil. My only question is why is that so hard for y’all to believe?

  25. BHL says:
    March 21, 2011 at 3:31 pm

Actually, Libya’s crude is the good stuff.. Light, sweet crude. They only produce 1.5M bb/d, but its the sour Saudi stuff that won’t work in a lot of refineries. My neighbor is a oil guy… says the real worry is the instability of Yemen and Bahrain.

  26. Diamond Girl says:
    March 21, 2011 at 3:40 pm

Markey’s a real POS…but this is for oil for France, Italy etc….they should be fighting this, I am totally against this.

We should have taken Kadaffy out years back- the CIA have also used him to help get al Qaeda (info) in Africa etc…we are now in four places, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan and now Libya….give me a break already.

    Enough is enough.

Hell, go after Iran for Starters if you want to go after who slaughters those that protest and are murdered, let alone their fingers in all of this in the middle east, go after Syria, Yemen etc etc.

I’m still waiting for all of that eeeeevil Boooosh Iraqi oil to finally reach our shores to fuel our economy. Yup, ought to start flowing in here any day now.

That WAS the main Libtard-screeched reason, wasn’t it?

  31. V in PA says:

    @ Sickofislam

We will naturally do the same thing in Saudi Arabia. Doesn’t make it right though.

Maybe we should drill our own oil. Use more natural gas. Investigate the safe use of Thorium to replace Uranium and build some of them. Use more coal.

In other words, be more self-sufficient and stay the F%@K out of everyone elses business.

“We are in Libya because of oil,” Markey said on MSNBC.

    “This? In the jar?

    No, it’s not oil.
Why would I put oil into a jar? What’s wrong with you?

I keep my poopies in a jar. I have a room with all the jars. It’s painted blue.

I keep another room for the jars with urine. You don’t want cross-contamination. That would be bad.

    I named all of them.

Don’t be stupid, the jars of poopy, not the jars of urine, you idiot.
Who would name jars of urine?

The names of jars of poopy?
    Pete. They’re all named Pete.”
