Good Grief: Superman to Renounce His American Citizenship at the UN…

Finally, the left has a superhero they can call their own (other than Obama).

(Comics Alliance) — After recently undertaking a journey to walk — not fly — across the United States in the “Grounded” storyline and reconnect with the country and everyday Americans, Superman appears to be taking another step that could have major implications for his national identity: in Action Comics #900 Superman announces that he is going to give up his U.S. citizenship. Despite very literally being an alien immigrant, Superman has long been seen as a patriotic symbol of “truth, justice, and the American way,” from his embrace of traditional American ideals to the iconic red and blue of his costume.

What it means to stand for the “American way” is an increasingly complicated thing, however, both in the real world and in superhero comics, whose storylines have increasingly seemed to mirror current events and deal with moral and political complexities rather than simple black and white morality.

The key scene takes place in “The Incident,” a short story in Action Comics #900 written by David S. Goyer with art by Miguel Sepulveda. In it, Superman consults with the President’s national security advisor, who is incensed that Superman appeared in Tehran to non-violently support the protesters demonstrating against the Iranian regime, no doubt an analogue for the recent real-life protests in the Middle East. However, since Superman is viewed as an American icon in the DC Universe as well as our own, the Iranian government has construed his actions as the will of the American President, and indeed, an act of war.

Superman replies that it was foolish to think that his actions would not reflect politically on the American government, and that he therefore plans to renounce his American citizenship at the United Nations the next day — and to continue working as a superhero from a more global than national perspective. From a “realistic” standpoint it makes sense; it would indeed be impossible for a nigh-omnipotent being ideologically aligned with America to intercede against injustice beyond American borders without creating enormous political fallout for the U.S. government.

I suspect the Saudis have bought up a lot of the comics industry, in order to prepare the way for their revolting “The 99″ series.

They don’t want the competition (and, anyway, wasn’t the Man of Steel created by Joooooos?)

Even Superman wants nothing to do with Obama. We will all be renouncing our citizenships before Obama is done with us.

My interest in comics ended when Captain America was killed off. Screw the stupid artists that work so hard to come up with story lines that are so blatantly Anti-American.

What ever happened to Superman beating the shit out of evil? He’s non-violently protesting against the Iranian government? What kind of hippie shit is this? I honestly can’t believe comics have fallen to this level. Wow.

What’s the difference between Superman and 0bama?

Well, one is praised as a superhero with seemingly endless powers and whom people believe can do no wrong, even though can’t so much as prove he was born in America, and the other…oh, wait…

It’s pathetic yet comical the how the left leaves no stone unturned when it comes to putting the United States down. Yet, they get offended if you question their patriotism. How can you question the patriotism of those who have none?

This is why I stopped buying / reading / collecting comics.
The writers cant keep their hands off of anything. Next thing you know, Batman will actually be gay (now you know why he refers to the batcave with Robin all the time) Wonderwoman will become pro abortion, Superman will run for office as a democrat and push Obamacare, and admit hes communist (thats why his cape is red!)
    Good Lord.

At least Superman was on the correct side in Iran..

gotta give the writers reality props on that one…

it’s not like they don’t have a point about how America is run either..

Like many others, I grew up with Superman. He was the epitomy of what was right and good in the world. Although I was in my 40s during the 911 attacks, I remember symbolically wondering where Superman was in that hour of need.

So many good, wholesome and reassuring symbols and ideals have been taken away from us by scum who have done so for no other reason than to impose destructive morals and lifestyles. Superman left us a long time ago. This is only another attempt to stick it in our face. Hopefully, if right prevails over evil, this comic book company will fail, or the rights will be sold and Superman will return to take his rightful place.

The comic publisher is trying to make a reference to the 2008 campaign pic of Obama where he was posing next to a statue of Superman.

They are purposely trying to associate Superman with Obama.

In the following issue, Superman is thrown into a Kryptonite cage in Guantanamo Bay by evil President Greg W. Bosh, where he is freed by his fellow prisoners/freedom fighters. Superman converts to Islam and dedicates his life to fighting imperialists, Crusaders, and JOOOOOOOS.
