University of Montana to Teach Islamic Law Next Semester…
I’ll go out on a limb and say liberal academia will whitewash the true nature of Sharia law.
MONTANA — Earlier this semester, Jeff Renz, a law professor at The University of Montana, appeared on a conservative radio show to discuss the myths and realities of Islamic law. Accompanying him to Missoula’s KVGO studio were UM professor Mehrdad Kia and Robert Seidenschwarz, president of the World Affairs Council of Montana.
According to Renz, the talk stirred up a fair amount of debate.
“It was an interesting conversation,” he said. “A lot of the myths were repeated and we talked about those as well as a lot of the accuracies that are negative.”
The appearance was a launching pad for Renz, who plans to expand the conversation this fall semester by teaching an Islamic law class at UM.
This development adds UM to the growing number of American universities offering classes on Islamic law, ranging from the University of Minnesota to Yale. Islamic law, also known as Shariah law, guides the daily behavior and actions of Muslims while influencing the legal code of Islamic countries.
The three-credit class, ANTY 491, will meet three times a week and is open to UM undergraduate, graduate and law students. Renz said the course will examine the development of Islam along with the four principles of Islamic jurisprudence and will address the challenges of applying Sharia law in the 21st century.
Renz said Shariah law is not monolithic and that legal codes vary from one Muslim country to another and are often intertwined with tribal law.
“The most important thing they’ll learn is that what people perceive to be Islamic law is really local and national law rationalized, and falsely rationalized, by reference to the Quran,” he said.

I remember when Montana was full of cowboys and Indians – from history books.
Now it’s full of cowboys, Indians, Muslims and lefty lunatics bent on destroying America.
Sick freaks.
Let’s see. For starters, I’m sure the beheadings, the stonings and the requirement that four men be present at the rape of a woman for her to stand a chance of securing a conviction will definitely be ignored.
A college class teaching fairy tales. Sounds like a good way to spend your money.
Too many freaking Californians have moved there. I should know, I grew up in Montana and went to school at the U of M: Missoula. It is the Berkeley of the Northwest. The school is a Liberal Mecca in what use to be a consistently Conservative state. That is obviously changing. This sickens me, but does not surprise me. I had a class from professor Mehrdad Kia and recall and anti-Israel bent to the subject matter. I just hope they don’t mess with their football program, that is one of the last few bright spots there. Go Griz!
They want to study the worst abomination and mostruosity that exists on the planet as if it were something that should be considered and had any value…Stupid Prick.
Here’s my post with links back to here. I also have a picture of myself on campus from 2008:

I always thought that Montana would be the last state to fall. But the good news is a new TV show:
“Sharia Law And Order”.
“A lot of the myths” ???? WTF????
What myths?
NAME ONE.
Great! Are we gonna have a fieldtrip to “chop shop square” to see Sharia in action? !
has anyone besides me noticed that just like communism, which was also responsible for the repression of billions and the murder of hundreds of millions,
the explanation and rationalization from followers and groupies is always along the lines of,
“it has just never been implenemted in its pure form” and when it looks bad, its not the content of the ideology that is breeding the evil that followers are responsible for, its just that the culprit is an outlier not really a good example, and he’s doing it wrong, but amongst themselves they own it and think the bloodshed is great and for the greater good…
UofM sucks. They always have, and always will. I got a degree there in the 90′s that has been as useless as tits on a man. What a waste of money–and it was a science degree! Not some damned basket weaving fine arts bullshit degree either.
They’ll do anything to pull that Sowdi money in….
You are giving Montana a bad rap. From where I live when I drive around there are still people wearing revolvers in town. Ain’t no Muslims either. But yes, Western Montana has changed. Damn!
I wonder if they will include the fact that non-muslims have all the rights of animals under Sharia? (In other words, no rights at all. I bet they will omit that.)
We have to adopt Sharia Law to see what’s in it.
When do they get to the part where you drive over childrens’ hands for stealing? How can I get myself accredited as a lecturer? I’ve got some great video for my students, most of it from LiveLeak.
Vermont used to be a great place to live when it was almost all republican, then a bunch of sneaky liberal democrat outsiders moved in and ruined it. Why couldn’t they stay where they came from and not ruin this once great place. Now I have to find a nice place to move to where common sense reigns. Any ideas?
from the link, a post suggesting inviting the most evil muslims from overseas to really teach shariah…

I have studied Islamic jurisprudence, and attended a seminar course in a western univ as well. I think it would be pertinent to invite Islamic law scholars from the Muslim world to speak on imp issues, instead of relying on just one professor or some non Muslim profs to disseminate such technically complex topic, which in any case cannot be fully covered in one course as there are four Fiqhs that define Islamic law.
@Zip, where’s the islamic cesspool now then?
Islam may not be ‘monolithic’ but they tend to have agreement on a couple of things, e.g.:
a) Apostasy from Islam is punishable by death (i.e no freedom of religion)
b) Women do not have equal rights to men
c) Non-muslims are treated as second class citizens to muslims
d) The Quar’an is immutable and cannot be changed
Some muslims try to whitewash these, such as claiming that they would support a ‘moratorium’ on the death penalty but no sane muslim would dare claim that Sharia does not require it.
Questions should be asked of these Sharia experts, on such as the issues above.
@joerice
i hear Idaho is nice.
whores. selling out the US for foreign students. they can get all the input on islamic law at any islamic shit hole they came from.
Even if what they were saying were true (and it isn’t) – what would it matter? Look at how Sharia is actually practiced wherever it is in force. Perhaps the good professor should go and try to reason with those chopping off the heads and explain to them that they are misinterpreting the “sacred” text. But no, you won’t see that, because he knows full well his head will be next.
Somebody needs to be roped and dragged thru town “cowboy” style
I would not at all be opposed to this, assuming they were about honest course content – “Know thy enemy” and all that.
But if it’s going to be presented in a ‘whitewashed, dumbed down’ version w/ the intent of promoting acceptance, well time to de-fund that frikkin’ school.
“…that what people perceive to be Islamic law is really local and national law rationalized, and falsely rationalized, by reference to the Quran”……
sounds like a plan for 1/2-truths in defense of Islam — like arguing female genital mutilation (FGM) is not Islamic, but local; headcoverings are not Islamic, but cultural; etc.
The laws of SATAN.
““A lot of the myths” ???? WTF????
What myths?
NAME ONE.”
‘Shariah law promotes justice.’
Oh, you meant the myths AGAINST it. Dunno.
Islam in itself, is a myth.
Don’t blame it on the native Montanans. Blame it on all the Californians who moved there in the past 20 years along with their granola and liberal ideas….
“And make mention of Mary in the Scripture, when she had withdrawn from her people to a chamber looking East, And had chosen seclusion from them. Then We sent unto her Our Spirit and it assumed for her the likeness of a perfect man. She said: Lo! I seek refuge in the Beneficent One from thee, if thou art Allah-fearing. He said: I am only a messenger of thy Lord, that I may bestow on thee a faultless son. She said: How can I have a son when no mortal hath touched me, neither have I been unchaste? He said: So (it will be). Thy Lord saith: It is easy for Me. And (it will be) that We may make of him a revelation for mankind and a mercy from Us, and it is a thing ordained. And she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a far place. And the pangs of childbirth drove her unto the trunk of the palm-tree. She said: Oh, would that I had died ere this and had become a thing of naught, forgotten! Then (one) cried unto her from below her, saying: Grieve not! Thy Lord hath placed a rivulet beneath thee, And shake the trunk of the palm-tree toward thee, thou wilt cause ripe dates to fall upon thee. So eat and drink and be consoled. And if thou meetest any mortal, say: Lo! I have vowed a fast unto the Beneficent, and may not speak this day to any mortal. Then she brought him to her own folk, carrying him. They said: O Mary! Thou hast come with an amazing thing. O sister of Aaron! Thy father was not a wicked man nor was thy mother a harlot. Then she pointed to him. They said: How can we talk to one who is in the cradle, a young boy? He spake: Lo! I am the slave of Allah. He hath given me the Scripture and hath appointed me a Prophet, And hath made me blessed wheresoever I may be, and hath enjoined upon me prayer and almsgiving so long as I remain alive, And (hath made me) dutiful toward her who bore me, and hath not made me arrogant, unblest. Peace on me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the day I shall be raised alive! Such was Jesus, son of Mary: (this is) a statement of the truth concerning which they doubt. It befitteth not (the Majesty of) Allah that He should take unto Himself a son. Glory be to Him! When He decreeth a thing, He saith unto it only: Be! and it is. And lo! Allah is my Lord and your Lord. So serve Him. That is the right path.” (The Noble Qur’an 19:19-36)
“O ye who believe! Be Allah’s helpers, even as Jesus son of Mary said unto the disciples: Who are my helpers for Allah? They said: We are Allah’s helpers. And a party of the Children of Israel believed, while a party disbelieved. Then We strengthened those who believed against their foe, and they became the uppermost.” (The Noble Qur’an 61:14)
