Palin: “Hells no, I would not vote to increase that debt ceiling”
As usual, she’s right. Except for the grammar thing.
(The Hill) — Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) on Friday doubled down on her opposition to raising the nation’s debt ceiling.
“Hells no. I would not vote to increase that debt ceiling,” she said during an interview on Fox News, where she is a paid contributor.
Palin, a potential GOP presidential candidate, has long been opposed to raising the nation’s $14.3 trillion debt limit.
But she indicated Friday she is willing to go further than Republican leaders in Congress and some other GOP presidential candidates, who are demanding that spending reforms be attached to a vote to raise the debt ceiling.
“It turns my stomach to hear this assumption articulated that we have to, despite the fact that we are raking in the federal government $6 billion a day,” she said. “Take that money and service our debt first and pay down some of that debt. Make sure that we are showing the international financial markets and our lenders that we’re serious about getting our debt and our deficit problems under control.”
The debate over the debt limit is expected to kick into full gear next week when Congress returns from the spring recess. GOP presidential candidates could pressure Republican leaders in Congress to hold out for major concessions from Democrats, who want a “clean” vote to raise the borrowing limit.
Palin said that raising it would show that the government is not serious about fixing its fiscal woes.
“Otherwise it just shows the American public that we aren’t serious, yet we are still going to incur more debt.”

So you vote against raising the debt ceiling and then what exactly? You think the government deficit will be magically done away with in the short period before the debt limit is hit? Or we hit the debt limit and then default? Or do you plan to argue that we must stop paying something else in order to pay the interest, and what things will you suggest not paying? How likely are you to get your way on that fight versus the catastrophic default scenario?
You can play with fire if you want, I just wish you weren’t doing it in a planet sized puddle of gasoline. On the plus side wallstreet wants the debt ceiling raised and they are the GOP for most intents and purposes. Palin can posture but the republican establishment knows who holds the leash.
Raising the debt limit each time its approached is like having no debt limit at all. They’ve never refused to raise it in the past, do why not try something new?

By way of contrast…earlier this week, Rep West said he would support raising the debt ceiling with certain conditions. Still love them both, but that’s what he said. Palin has been consistently HELL NO on this, and offering specific steps to fund our obligations.

I agree hell no, we are borrowing 45 cents of every dollar we spend and our debt is nearing half of our GDP meaning almost half of our total yearly production of every good and service produced in the country is paid out against debt interest, we are too near the point of no return, and may already be too far gone.

Why would any sane person consider this before you actually have a plan in place for addressing this mountain of debt over the long term?
Paul Ryan has some ideas and graphs, he doesn’t have any policies put into motion by law.
At the moment, you’re a country that can’t pay off your mortgage, have no plans to address your future repayments, but before getting a plan for addressing that to keep your bank happy, you’re going to shut down your operations just to ensure you don’t increase your limit this year.
The last increase was 2009. So after threatening to shut down operations over an annual budget, you’re now doing so over a debt limit that’s reliably revised every couple of years. That says little else other than “I can’t manage my finances”.
If you want to say “let’s shut down the government over this” your next sentence needs to explain how your foreign creditors are supposed to take you seriously as a debt risk, and needs to be delivered very, very quickly.
On the other hand, why you would consider this before putting in place policies to address your long-term debt problem cannot be explained. You’re just declaring you’re both a short term debt risk and still a long term one. You won’t need 3 guesses how that is viewed.

Forgive me for being unclear, but that would be the first step in the plan. Cut all spending save essential services only, including paying debts.
Again, forgive for lacking your financial acumen, but I do not know the US budget like I know my own. However, the same principles should apply — no debt and pay as you go.

That’s 180 degrees backwards. What’s the point in not raising the debt ceiling when you have no plans to reduce debt.
You were already set to blow the limit. Then the House just passed a budget that adds 1.5 trillion to the debt this year and 6 trillion over the decade, and no plans to balance it.
How can you look at that and say you can’t see any reason why your current amount of debt is the largest you will ever have? That doesn’t involve economic acumen, it’s just maths.

It’s 14 trillion dollars. If you want to cut your way to servicing the interest on that debt, then you’re talking about stopping the pay checks for so many people that a hell of a lot of them will be wearing camo in overseas countries when they find out.
Reason just published their “hey don’t sweat the debt ceiling” policy recommendation that lays out a best case scenario that you’ve got 5 months. By September, there aren’t even any hypothetical scenarios where you don’t default.
Let’s be clear. If we were talking about the military instead of the economy, we would be discussing should we take most of our nukes, point them at ourselves, threaten to fire them until July, at which point they will fire themselves sometime between then and September.
