Flashback: Laura Bush Forced to Cancel White House Poetry Event After Leftists Freak out…
Michelle Obama is honoring a poet/rapper who glorifies cop-killing while Laura Bush tries to hold an event dedicated to Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman and the ensuing outrage forces the event to be cancelled. Anyone else see a problem here?
(March 6, 2003) — Leading American poets presented about 15,000 anti-war poems to Congress yesterday as writers, academics and students rallied to oppose President George W Bush’s policy on Iraq.
The literary movement against military action was born of a “kind of nausea” one poet and publisher felt at a recent invitation to the White House.
Sam Hamill was so disgusted at being asked to take part in a symposium on “Poetry and the American Voice”, chaired by Laura Bush, the First Lady, that he launched an online collection of anti-war verse.
He was one of the four big name poets handing over the resulting anthology to sympathetic congressmen yesterday. Others were two Pulitzer prize winners, WS Merwin and Jorie Graham, and Terry Tempest Williams.
The White House event, scheduled for last month and dedicated to the works of Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman, was cancelled when some on the guest list indicated that they wanted to discuss Iraq as well.
Mr Hamill’s campaign has galvanised liberal intellectuals and attracted support from a range of poets and writers, professionals and dilettantes.
Not all poets are anti-war, however. Angered by publicity given to poets taking a stance against military action, Charles Weatherford, a Michigan management consultant, has created a website dedicated to pro-war verse.
The Poets for the War site has attracted up to 70 amateur wordsmiths, offering such refreshing lines as: “Take down Saddam like a sack of taters, pay no attention to screamers and traitors.
“Our goal is to support the troops and oppose terrorism,” Mr Weatherford said.
In London, 10,000 poems, including verse by Harold Pinter, Benjamin Zephaniah and Andrew Motion, the Poet Laureate, were handed to Downing Street.
