WASHINGTON — House Assistant Democratic Leader Jim Clyburn objected Thursday to coverage of his views on the impact of President Barack Obama’s race on assessments of his performance in the White House.
In a letter to the editor of The State newspaper in Clyburn’s hometown of Columbia, S.C., the No. 3 House Democrat said an article published Thursday had sensationalized his perspectives on the ties between Obama’s race and his work as president.
“I have always abhorred the word ‘racism,’ ” Clyburn said in the letter. “I never use it. I believe it is a lethal term, and I am offended that my honest responses to a reporter’s clearly designed agenda would be distorted in such a manner.”
The article was published in The State, in other South Carolina newspapers and on dozens of McClatchy and non-McClatchy websites around the country.
There were more than 1,100 comments about the article within 24 hours of its posting on www.mccclatchydc.com and more than 450 comments on www.thestate.com in the same period.
“You know, I’m 70 years old,” the article quoted Clyburn as saying. “And I can tell you; people don’t like to deal with it, but the fact of the matter is, the president’s problems are in large measure because of his skin color.”
Clyburn then described hateful mail, phone calls and faxes he receives as the highest-ranking African-American in Congress. He suggested that Obama receives similar materials.

Is Clyburn arguing that the color of Obama’s skin is the reason why our nation has such high unemployment, low growth, rising inflation, crippling foreclosures, and bank failures? Wow, talk about seeing race in everything!
I tried really hard to understand how Clyburns ‘color of skin’ statement could possibly be taken in any other way. Maybe he meant that Americans prefer a lighter colored President much as someone might say they prefer a blue suit to a brown one.
After realizing I totally wasted my time trying to wrap my mind around his lame spin, I came to the conclusion the messiah’s suit is still empty regardless of what color he or his suit is, and old Jim needs to realize some things you just can’t defend.

How do people like Clyburn get into positions of such high power? I am not sure he things we are dumb asses. I think he is such a dumb ass that he does not even realize it when he makes a dumb ass statement.
I belong to a minority that is based on the color of my skin, and yet people say all the time that they think that this particular minority is ugly, and there are even commercially available products to change the color of my skin.

Do you see how ridiculous it is to make ANY sort of judgment about ANYONE based upon the color of their skin? Whether you make a statement that a person is somehow less valuable, attractive, competent, ethical, intelligent, civilized, etc. because of skin color, or you make a statement that all criticism of that person must be based on holding a belief that the person is somehow worth less because of skin color, you’re being a R A C I S T, Mr. Clyburn.
