GOP Rep. Tom Graves Questions Legality of Obama Using an Autopen to Sign Patriot Act Extension…

Silly man, everyone knows laws don’t apply to Barack Obama.

Rep. Tom Graves (R-Ga.) is questioning President Obama’s use of an autopen in signing an extension of the Patriot Act.

In a letter Friday, Graves asks Obama to confirm that he saw the law prior to its autopen signing.

“Mr. President, I write to request your confirmation that S. 990, as passed by Congress, was presented to you prior to the autopen signing, as well as a detailed, written explanation of your Constitutional authority to assign a surrogate the responsibility of signing bills passed into law,” Graves wrote.

Obama signed the bill into law late Thursday night. The autopen was used because the president was in France, meeting with G8 leaders, and the bill’s provisions expired at midnight.

The media had been reporting that the document was to be flown over to him. Guess there were people who knew that was a really stupid idea. So, perhaps this is just to fend everyone off until he returns next week and sign it while he’s in town for a few minutes. I hear he has a few more trips on the agenda.

I would have thought they could have faxed it to him and he could have signed it in real life.

That would have made sense; where’s it written that he has to sign within the borders of the US?

Is that why “they” (?) decided not to fly the document to him? Nothing this dope does makes sense.

This is a waste of time to bring up this kind of an argument and makes the Republicans look petty. Better for the Republican leadership to try – just try for once fighting Obama on the real issues – $14 trillion in deficits, three wars, open southern border, economy in shambles, ignoring the Middle East uprisings, wiping out his own Democrat Party last November, etc.

Are you kidding me? This IS a real issue. A Constitutional one. Besides the fact that Obama is not even a lawful president since he is not a natural born citizen.

But that’s not a “real” issue either, is it. Just a minor technicality. Like actually signing the document instead of some unknown person using a machine to sign his name for him.

Just a technicality. Let’s move on. Nothing to see here.

Gives him plenty of “plausible deniability.” He can say he never authorized someone to use the machine to sign his name on some bill in the near future.

There is no reason for anyone who is paying attention, to not know how dangerous this is. A bill could be forcefully passed through the legislature (like Obamacare) through deceit and trickery by the majority Dems. Then immediately signed into law using this surrogate method while Obama is away from the country. When he comes back to the US he can say never mind, that bill should never have been signed. I didn’t authorize it to become law, it’s not my fault. Heads will roll. But too bad about all you people who have suffered devastating effects because of it. (Mission already accomplished.)

Is this even within the realm of possibility? Then it is extremely dangerous to allow it.

They don’t need to handle this, just give the ammo to one of the many anti PATRIOT ACT groups and let them run with it.

Actually, I think Obama is “losing it” and fast. His handlers have to keep him out of the country and away from possible exposure of his mental incompetence. He’s appearing stoned with eyelids drooping, writing the year 2008, and babbling nonsense.

How is the power behind the throne going to keep their agenda moving forward? They need a surrogate signing mechanism, while they trot Obama out every now and then to prove he’s still “in control.”

I guess by signing a legal document with an auto pen sets a new standard. Maybe I can set these up in some of the office supply places and instead of having to send a signed document via some fast courier service. Think about it , email the document, they print it at the far end, they put it in the auto pen connected electronically and I sign it from afar. Wow, a new legal standard and if the guy that sits in the chair in the Oval Office can do it and call it a law/bill then anyone else can do it too.

Jetstream, I respectfully recognize your argument that this *may be* a real issue, but it absolutely needs to take second fiddle to the list I provided in my first post. We will not throw this American-hating Socialist nightmare out of the White House fighting about the constitutionality of signing with a robo pen or a real pen. The legions of sheep – I mean voters – watching American Idol and Dancing With the Stars don’t even know what a Constitution is. They DO, however, know how much gas/food/clothing costs, that their friends and family members are fighting three wars, and that their mortgages are failing at the rate of 1 in 4.

If an automatic pen can sign for Obama, what do we need Obama for?
