Obama Uses “Autopen” Machine to Sign Patriot Act in Washington… While He’s 3,700 Miles Away in Bed in a French Hotel…

Plausible deniability?

(Daily Mail) — President Obama, or rather a machine impersonating his signature, signed the controversial Patriot Act only minutes before the midnight deadline, extending anti-terrorism measures enacted in the wake of 9/11.

Mr Obama did not sign the act personally as he was 3,725 miles and six time zones away in France at a meeting of G8 world leaders, so a presidential autopen was used instead.

The White House said the President had approved use of the autopen, a machine which holds a pen and signs his actual signature.

Mr Obama was awoken at 5:45am in his hotel room in Deauville, France, so that he could review and approve the bill and authorise his signature, with only minutes to go before the deadline passed in the U.S.

An autocrat using an Autopen Machine

    Makes perfect sense.

I wonder why all the news reports were saying the actual bill was going to be flown to France for him to sign? Why couldn’t the document have been faxed?

Did obama say anything about the Patriot Act during the last election? As I recall, one of his main promises as president, the reason the left supposedly voted for him was he would bring the troops home during his first term.

A bill is not a contract. It’s not covered by contract law.

What piece of legislation enables a president to do this? What empowers the ‘Autopen device’ as a legitimate extension of the executive branch?

Are we certain that the president still doesn’t have to physically sign the document?

It’s appropriate for him to use an autopen that “signs his actual signature.” After all, he has a Teleprompter that thinks his actual thoughts and speaks his actual words.

Auto pin for an absentee auto p-resident.
Can we get a hold of this pin and use it to defund every obama policy every signed??

It needs to be replaced with the Auto Impeachment Machine, so he can sign his ass out of office.

With the auto pin we no longer require obama to actually be in the same country or state to sign documents the last part of his job as P-resident and the only one he had to do in person in office in Washington for a night or two .. Now he will never stop vacationing.

Anyone else think this is Obama’s way of distancing himself from the Patriot Act that he (and other Dems) despised while Bush was in office, but now seem to embrace since there’s a (D) in the White House?

  13. John Difool says:
    May 27, 2011 at 10:30 am

    @JenBee

Dem’s always embrace the very tyranny they accuse Republicans of when they are in office. They were up in arms over net-neutrality while Bush was in office and the GOP controlled both houses of government. Now they are doing their very best to enact some form of it and have no problems whatsoever with Bill Clinton saying the ‘Orwellian’ that the government should form a ” Ministry of Truth”.

At any rate whatever stringent controls they try to enact while they have power rest assured as soon as the Republicans take over they will wail and gnash their teeth that they are being oppressed and their rights are being infringed upon and that the very apparatchiks they put in place should be done away with.

Yeah I suppose he should have used a Quill too! Get over it… I work remotely from home and deal with people all over he world via Web Conferencing, Email, phone and various other means.. As long as there is an Audit trail I find this perfectly acceptable. I suppose the President should also be in the white house if he needs to call a nuclear response to an attack? No he has a device for that too and you all sleep better knowing that the football exists… Yeah the President can do more than one thing…. I

just don’t understand the fascination with everyone looking for trivial (and already know) things to vent their hatred of Obama against. You don’t have to like him, but this is really a waste of time. If Obama can improve the technical capabilities of the Executive Branch and bring it up to speed – why not?

Seems to me the president is making the rules up as he goes along, bypassing the Congress at every possible opportunity.

Unconstitutional, but we are all getting inured to that, so wwhy stand on ceremony.

    Article 1, Section 7

Every bill which shall have passed the House of Representatives and the Senate, shall, before it become a law, be presented to the President of the United States: If he approve he shall sign it.

TOTUS should be combined with autopen, and for good measure hook it up to an ATM and put it on wheels. You could then roll it around and it can blab, sign bills, and dispense money, that pretty much covers it.
No embarrassing bowing or notecards to carry around.

So if he must sign every bill by hand does he also have to Walk down Pennsylvania Ave to return every veto’ed bill to congress?

“If he does not approve, he must return the bill, unsigned, within ten days, excluding Sundays, to the house of the United States Congress in which it originated, while the Congress is in session.”

Of course he doesn’t have to walk the bill back to congress… This makes a lot more sense than spending taxpayer money to fly the bill to him. Think about it.
