Crazy: Thanks To Obama’s Radical Environmental Regulations Electricity Rates Expected To Jump 40% – 60%…

Should do wonders for the economy.

(Chicago Tribune) — Consumers could see their electricity bills jump an estimated 40 to 60 percent in the next few years.

The reason: Pending environmental regulations will make coal-fired generating plants, which produce about half the nation’s electricity, more expensive to operate. Many are expected to be shuttered.

The increases are expected to begin to appear in 2014, and policymakers already are scrambling to find cheap and reliable alternative power sources. If they are unsuccessful, consumers can expect further increases as more expensive forms of generation take on a greater share of the electricity load.

“Each generator will have to decide for itself whether the investment required to meet environmental requirements can be justified based on its projection of market prices and the cost of its capital. In any case, those costs will be passed through to consumers,” said Mark Pruitt, director of the Illinois Power Agency, which procures electricity for Illinois.

American Electric Power, one of the country’s largest coal-burning electricity generators, said Thursday it will retire nearly a quarter of its coal-fueled generating capacity and that it will spend up to $8 billion to retrofit remaining units to meet regulations that start taking effect in 2014. Those moves will have an impact.

“The sudden increase in electricity rates and impacts on state economies will be significant at a time when people and states are still struggling,” AEP Chairman and CEO Michael G. Morris said.

They are closing coal-fueled electric power plants in Ohio, a couple not too far from me, and in Googling for the story I noticed it’s happening in other states too.

Reason? The EPA regulations on coal-fired power plants.

This, of course means, a shortage in power during extreme times (more stress on existing grids down the line), higher prices to consumers … and lost jobs from these closing plants.

    Obama is an evil bastard.

    The EPA MUST be abolished.

I plan to call them on tomorrow and let them know i don’t want one of these meters. I’ve heard so bad stories in these new meters. My husband said chances are there is nothing i can do about it. At least i can let them know my displeasure with the whole situation.

They installed a smart meter on my house last summer. I watched my electricity bill go up about 15%. With these meters, they can do “peak hours”, which are a higher rate during the heat of summer day. You know, when the air conditioner is going. Then at night, when it cools off and you don’t need it, you get the off-peak” lower rate.

Hi we’re from the government we’re here to help!

The Straight Dope: Why don’t we ditch nukes and coal?
    Cecil Adams

In 2002 the global energy consumption rate was 13.5 terawatts. What will it be in 2050? If everybody were to burn through the juice at the current U.S. rate, we’d need 102 terawatts — seven times as much. Chances of our producing that: zero.
Where will it come from? A 2006 paper by MIT chemistry professor Daniel Nocera entitled “On the Future of Global Energy, Nocera runs through some possibilities:

First, biomass. If we devote all the arable land on earth to energy production rather than food crops and presumably just don’t eat, we could generate 7 to 10 terawatts.
Next, wind. If we build wind farms on 100 percent of the sufficiently windy land, we could produce 2.1 terawatts.
Third, hydroelectric. If we dam all the remaining rivers, we could come up with 0.7 to 2 additional terawatts.
Finally, nuclear. I know you don’t like nukes, Randvek, but the professor’s evident aim was to tote up all power sources that aren’t net emitters of greenhouse gases. He thinks we could produce 8 terawatts by constructing 8,000 nuclear power plants, which would mean one new plant every two days for the next 40 years.

Total: around 18 to 22 terawatts. In other words, if we squeeze out every available watt of alternative energy on the planet, and build nukes at an impossibly aggressive rate, we’ll barely keep up with the energy needed to support even a modest standard of living for the world’s people.

In reality, we’ll need to find additional energy somewhere. Nocera’s solution is to push for a technological breakthrough in solar power, currently a relatively trivial contributor to the world energy mix. Good luck, seriously. Barring that, however, we’re stuck with more coal, oil, and gas, and you know the problems with those.

My point isn’t that the situation is hopeless, although it certainly gives one pause. All I’m saying is we need to dispense with the illusory notion of “alternative” energy, which suggests we’ll get to be choosy about energy sources. Sorry, not going to happen. We’ll have to use them all.

There is going to have to be some serious suffering before people start getting a real clue. Until the states ban together to stop all this nonsense it is going to continue irregardless of who holds the administration or congress. Congress, for that matter, is culpable in making themselves irrelevant. Until the people of the states start allowing their state legislatures and governors to turn down federal money/subsidies, yes even though we pay into it, can states start telling the feds to take a flying f’ing leap.
