Herman Cain: Don’t Call Me “African-American . . . I’m A Black Man In America”

Of all the hyphenated labels we put on people now African-American is the most absurd, the truth is many blacks can trace their lineage in America further back than whites.

(Bloomberg) — Herman Cain, the beguilingly personable pizza mogul and Tea Party sweetheart who is showing well in the so-far uncompelling Republican presidential nomination campaign, threw a flag early in an interview I conducted with him last week. I had made the dire mistake of referring to him as African-American.

“I am an American. Black. Conservative,” he said, punctuating each aspect of his self-identity. “I don’t use African-American, because I’m American, I’m black and I’m conservative. I don’t like people trying to label me. African- American is socially acceptable for some people, but I am not some people.”

What is it about the word “African” that the candidate doesn’t particularly appreciate?

“Most of the ancestors that I can trace were born here in the United States of America,” he said, hitting those last four words with a hammer. “And then it goes back to slavery. And I’m sure my ancestors go all the way back to Africa, but I feel more of an affinity for America than I do for Africa. I’m a black man in America.”

“And I’m sure my ancestors go all the way back to Africa….”

    ———-

If you go back far enough, EVERYONE’S ancestors can be traced to east Africa.

There is only one human gene pool.

Good for Cain, and usually true, except for obama, who is a true African-American.

I like this man more all the time. I am so sick of people putting duel labels on their nationality. Especially when they put the other hyphenated name before American. If you like the first name better then go back there. This goes for all of the Mexicans, Jews, Muzzies… Even the American Indians call themselves just that. But hey, they were here first.

I have friends that are African Americans and are White, and for some reason, they didn’t get financial aid in college. One was told that if he marked that box again, he would be disqualified to ever apply again.

Blacks have seriously been here longer than most whites. I love this man. These are not the voices the Democrats want to hear, but it is the voice of equality and brotherhood and I’m loving to hear it.

Dirtclod…thanks for the link. I have never heard Cain’s stance on guns. I did like the author’s list of questions. Every politician should have to answer them.

It is refreshing that he is an American as opposed to Afro-American. I hate that B.S. The guy doesn’t have a chance of winning. I like most of what he says, I just can’t see him as president or being able to beat obama.

Herman Cain is a refreshing change from Obama, and I would be proud to vote for him. Actually, I will grit my teeth and vote for anybody over Obama, but I would be proud to vote for Herman, West, Palin or Bolton.

I hope this logic catches on, considering they are serious about wanting equal treatment.
As long as they insist on segregating themselves with a hyphen, they’ll resemble a cat trying to cover up shit on a marble floor.

Personally I have always loathed that term to describe blacks.

It’s horribly inaccurate , and patronizing. If a black man from Jamaica migrates to the US he will be called “African-American”

Now I was never that good at Geography but Jamaica was NOT in Africa last time I looked at a map!!

I tip my hat to Mr. Cain, thank you sir for telling it like it is !!!

    CAIN ’12!!!!

Doesn’t matter where we are from, what color we are, or what we believe we are all just a bunch of humans who all have one destination, a grave, unless we have met the One that made us all possible and the One that made a way for One such as He to hang with ones such as us.
