Rep. Tim Scott floats impeachment if Obama usurps Congress’ authority on the debt limit

Most likely because he’s a racist.

WASHINGTON — While some have asserted that the debt limit might be unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment, and therefore President Obama does not need congressional approval to raise it, Republicans have been quick to express skepticism over the idea. On Tuesday, a Republican congressman went a step further, saying that if Obama were to use that argument to bypass Congress on the issue, it would be an impeachable offense.

“This president is looking to usurp congressional oversight to find a way to get it done without us. My position is that is an impeachable act from my perspective,” said Rep. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) at a meeting sponsored by the Tea Party group LowCountry 9.12 Project on Tuesday, first reported by Lindsay Street on Summerville Patch.

His comments were met with enthusiastic applause.

“There are a lot of things people say, ‘Are you going to impeach the president over that?’ — No. But this? This is catastrophic,” continued Scott. “This jeopardizes the credibility of our nation if one man can usurp the entire system set up by our founding fathers over something this significant.”

Obama doesn’t appear to be looking at ways to “usurp congressional oversight” on the debt ceiling. During his Twitter town hall on Wednesday, the president was asked whether he would consider invoking the 14th Amendment to pay government obligations if Congress refuses to raise the debt ceiling.

Obama did not rule out such an option, but he did insist that the situation should not get to a place where such drastic measures would be needed.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney has also said he’s not aware of any White House lawyers looking into the issue, although last week, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner mentioned the clause in the 14th Amendment that states U.S. public debt “shall not be questioned.”

On Tuesday, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) told The Huffington Post he thought the whole issue was “silly.” “I think it’s interesting to talk about, but I don’t think it’s sustainable as a legitimate position,” he said.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), meanwhile, has called the 14th Amendment solution “crazy talk.”

The 14th Amendment, which is pretty clear to anyone who reads it without bias, simply states that when the USA owes money, that money will be repaid, without question.
If anything, that brings a sledgehammer down on the current pile of DemRats’ various arguments, because everything they’ve done in the past 40+ years has been to undermine their Constitutional duty, under the very Amendment they’re now trying to hide behind.
Ironically, there might be a future argument made for not repaying much of what Zero has spent, based on the second portion of the debt-related section. Of course, you’d have to prove that the DemRats intended all along to use the debt to destroy the USA, but that wouldn’t be too difficult, considering.
“Section 4. The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. But neither the United States nor any State shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void.”
Also note, only congress is authorized to make these decisions, not the Executive branch (in Section 5).
“Section 5. The Congress shall have power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.”

Tim Scott is a good guy. I’ve been following his stance on issues for several months and by far he stands conservative.

Patriotic Logic: “Tim Scott is a good guy.”

    ———-

I like his style too. I like the mix of personalities we got during the last election.

Some are plain spoken and blunt, and some are as charming as they come (Like Tim Scott). Liberals like to ‘strategize’ by emotional impact alone. They tailor their attacks according to the personality of their opponents. They don’t care about content. They are there for the drama.

It makes things really hard for them when you do the ‘Good Cop/Bad Cop’ thing. Their rhetorical word games don’t work when tone of the conversation keeps changing.

If someone had told us 2 years ago, that a President of the US would ignore: the War Powers Act, the Medicare Reform Act, US Immigration Laws, a US Circuit Court Judge’s order on drilling, US Law in Defense of Marriage, US Law on Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, requests from Congress for documents, requests from Congress regarding info on Czars, etc…… wouldn’t we have said “that’s crazy talk”?

Ya hear, RINOs? Are you listening, squishy Repubics? Now, that’s the way to do it! That’s the way to talk about defending and upholding the Constitution in bold colors, as Ronaldus Magnus advised.

If he keeps up putting it out there, Rep. Scott’s will have a really great future ahead of him.

Katherine – You left out 2 very important things. Emperor Barry is in violation of 2 Federal rulings to halt the implementation of Obamacare, which was deemed un-Constitutional. He deserves to be impeached and be charged with High Crimes and Misdemeanors and bundled off to prison. All of his comrades and illegal czars need to be frog-marched to prison, too.

He has already committed “debt ceiling breaking and spending” offenses by starting the war in Libya without congressional oversight as required by the War Powers Act– adding huge sums to the federal debt that weren’t there before it– therefore, he has ALREADY committed “impeachable offenses” in my book.
