(Briefing Room) — Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) praised a backup plan by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to raise the debt ceiling.
“I strongly support Senator McConnell’s efforts to avoid a default on our nation’s debt, and the last-case emergency proposal he outlined yesterday to ensure that Republicans aren’t unduly blamed for failure to raise the debt ceiling,” McCain said in a statement on Wednesday.
McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee, criticized President Obama for warning that unless the debt ceiling is raised, Social Security checks for seniors might not go out on Aug. 3, a day after the Treasury Department projects the government will default unless a deal is reached.
“The President is stoking fears among our seniors by falsely asserting that Republicans’ position on the debt talks endangers their Social Security checks,” McCain continued. “The President’s obvious strategy is to convince Americans that Republicans are to blame for the current impasse and any worst-case scenarios of default.”

McConnell tried to explain this goofy idea to Laura Ingraham today, but didn’t convince me too much. It’s good to throw the whole mess in Obama’s lap, but giving up congressional authority is just dumb.

You are quite correct. Why would anyone willingly give this president any more power to spend anything more money. The “old bulls” need to retire if they don’t have the guts to stop this abrogation of their responsibility. It will be interesting to see if Marco steps up.

those 30 yr in office blue hairs didn’t appoint themselves the office. they were voted in. perhaps even ran against someone who was an actual conservative but as it happens so often those people are deemed “unelectable”. don’t have the right name, the nice hair, the smile, the pedigree, the backing of the party, or the ability to lie to your face. it’s better to have someone with an R next to their name no matter what the cost.
if you’ll vote for them they become electable. we need to stop holding our noses when we go into vote. vote for someone/something not against someone. look where it’s gotten us.
