(Raymond Ibrahim) — Muslim “child-marriage” — euphemism for pedophilia — is making headlines again, at least in Arabic media: Dr. Salih bin Fawzan, a prominent cleric and member of Saudi Arabia’s highest religious council, just issued a fatwa asserting that there is no minimum age for marriage, and that girls can be married “even if they are in the cradle.”
Appearing in Saudi papers on July 13, the fatwa complains that “Uninformed interference with Sharia rulings by the press and journalists is on the increase, posing dire consequences to society, including their interference with the question of marriage to small girls who have not reached maturity, and their demand that a minimum age be set for girls to marry.”
Fawzan insists that nowhere does Sharia set an age limit for marrying girls: like countless Muslim scholars before him, he relies on Koran 65:4, which discusses marriage to females who have not yet begun menstruating (i.e., are prepubescent) and the fact that Muhammad, Islam’s role model, married Aisha when she was 6-years-old, “consummating” the marriage — or, in modern parlance, raping her — when she was 9. . . .
Fawzan concludes his fatwa with a warning: “It behooves those who call for setting a minimum age for marriage to fear Allah and not contradict his Sharia, or try to legislate things Allah did not permit. For laws are Allah’s province; and legislation is his excusive right, to be shared by none other. And among these are the rules governing marriage.”

I’d just like to clarify a few things about Islam and the liberal attitude toward it.
Short of extreme tree-hugging hippie Leftists, which are about as crazy as extreme bible-thumping child’s-funeral-picketing Rightists, most liberals do NOT support the atrocities committed in the name of the Muslim prophets or God.
The liberal attitude is that people don’t deserve to die for ignorance or indoctrination, and that rather than approaching these people with hate or violence, we should fight them through peaceful methods, such as continuously showing them a positive example, offering them the tools they need to leave their oppressive way of life and join us in the new millennium, and demonstrations. I’m not saying this is the best way to go about it, but it is the optimistic one.
When one expresses disgust for Islam and how it treats people, what you must not forget is that historically, Christianity was very much like Islam is now. Only a few hundred years ago, child marriages, holy wars, persecution, sacrifices, rituals, and oppressed social castes were just as severe and prevalent. Islam is a younger religion, and has resisted catching up, but it comes from the same roots as other middle-eastern monotheistic faiths.
The Muslims btw, worship the same God as Christians do, they just have totally different ideas about it. And like extremists here, those who take the Koran literally and call for violence are not the voice of the entire culture. There are plenty of moderate and secular Muslims who wish for nothing but to live in peace and comfort within a free society. Putting them all in the same category is like lumping every American in with the WBC or the KKK. Sure, they’re loud, but do they speak for everyone?
It’s because there are so many progressive people who happen to be Muslim, who, believe it or not, are not actively part of any conspiracy to overthrow Christianity, that Liberals are defending Muslim citizens from being bullied or attacked or ostracized in a Christian-dominated society. And the reason why the cry for acceptance is so in your face, is because if, as with any cause, nobody made a big fuss, it would just be ignored, people wouldn’t notice it, and nothing would change.
