McDonald’s Caves In To Michelle Obama’s Food Police, French Fries In Happy Meals Take A Back Seat To Apple Slices…
Because parents are too stupid to make their own decisions.
(Reuters) — McDonald’s Corp said on Tuesday it will soon tweak its children’s Happy Meals, reducing the French fry portion by more than half and automatically adding apples to the popular meals, after coming under pressure from consumer groups to provide healthier fare.
McDonald’s — which consumer groups say should lower calories, sugar and sodium in its meals for children — said that it would start making the changes in September and that the new Happy Meals would be available in all of its 14,000 U.S. restaurants by the first quarter of 2012.
The world’s largest hamburger chain also said it would reduce sodium, added sugars, saturated fats and calories across its entire U.S. menu by 2020.
“We are going to be casting our gaze more closely on portion management as well as how we can introduce more food groups such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains,” Cindy Goody, McDonald’s senior director of nutrition, said on a webcast.
The new child’s French fry portion will be 1.1 ounces, down from 2.4 ounces previously. The new child’s fry portion has about 100 calories, the company said.
The new apple portion includes a half-cup of peeled fruit and has no added sugar or accompanying dipping sauces.
The move will reduce calorie counts for Happy Meals by about 20 percent. As a result, the new Happy Meals will be well under 600 calories.

This is the market. If you have a good product, people will come. Some people like McDonald’s. Since my family a) keeps kosher, and b) doesn’t like it, we don’t go there. Its our choice.
Your ranting reminds me of some rich liberal who berated a friend of mine in a checkout line– “You should be buying fresh vegtables and meat for your family.” My friend lived over 50 miles away on a reservation and NEEDED the shelf-stable and sadly, processed canned veggies, soups, mixes & etc. to feed her family until the next paycheck when she could get back to the store. (Food deserts are a reality, but that’s a whole ‘nother conversation.)
I’m glad you eat healthy. I do to. BUT– it is our choice and we are able to do it. Some people can’t or won’t, and that’s the burden of a semi-free society. I don’t want the Food Police looking over my shoulder all the time. Neither should you.

McD’s ain’t stupid. There are no target amounts for reduction, and a lot can change by 2020. They’re simply paying lip service to the current administration and buying time. And they know they’ll sell more sides of fries to kids who don’t like apples – so it benefits them for the apples to taste like crap.

It’s an easy choice to make. The new product labeling laws would have meant that McDonalds would have to widen the french fry boxes enough to include a picture of Michelle’s fat butt. (which would have dramatically increased portion size)
It was cheaper in ‘the end’ just to swap out the fries for apple slices.

Show me where I said I supported the law? I don’t. It’s nanny state at its finest and I wish we wouldn’t have to do it. However, these companies have one purpose – profit. They do not care about the long term effects on their consumers and the country. They only see as far as the next quarter. They have no empathy of foresight. I have two youngun’s and we probably go to a fast food joint for lunch once or twice a month. So, for them the fries are a treat. And another thing, those apples in the kid’s meals are nasty, nasty, nasty. They’re peeled and drenched in some metallic-tasting preservative before being bagged and sealed. My youngest even refuses to eat them and she will literally eat anything. They’re disgusting.
I have no sympathy for McDonalds if they’re going to cave to this crap. Did you ever think of telling these marxist food police to mind their own damn business????

I went to the McDonalds website and wrote them about this. I happen to love their Happy Meals. The portion sizes are great and the prices are cheap. I told them to leave the Happy Meals alone, mentioning that the Obamas will be gone in a year and a half and this issue will be forgotten. I also mentioned that it is not the government’s job to get into the business of regulating Happy Meals.
I would suggest that rather than bitch about this, as I did in my earlier post, we write McDonalds and tell them how we feel. (politely)

There is a difference, and not a hard one to distinguish, between proactively killing off and not subsidizing their self-destruction. I thought you were all liassez faire capitalists? Why should we support people too stupid to eat healthy and exercise? Why not reward the productive and fit members of society who add to our success? You are against bailouts for mismanaged corporations but support bailouts for mismanaged lives? You support tax breaks for healthy (e.g. wealth producing) corporations but oppose tax breaks for healthy citizens?
