Reid Delays 1 A.M. Debt Vote, ABC News Reports Tentative Deal Has Been Reached…

He didn’t have the votes to begin with, so this isn’t much of a surprise.

(LA Times) — Efforts to reach a last-minute deal to stave off a potentially disastrous federal default appeared to make progress late Saturday as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid called off a scheduled 1 a.m. Sunday test vote and declared himself newly “optimistic.”

Reid (D-Nev.) scheduled a new vote for noon Sunday, saying he wanted to give the parties more time to negotiate. Talks were underway at the White House, he said, and progress was being made toward the Democratic demand for a long-term debt limit increase that would carry the government through the end of 2012.

“I’m glad to see this move toward cooperation and compromise,” Reid said. “I hope it bears fruit.”

Take this with a grain of salt.

ABC News has learned that Republicans and the White House have struck a tenative deal to raise the debt ceiling before the Aug. 2 deadline. It’s not done yet, but here is the framework of the tentative deal they have worked out, according to a source familiar with the negotiations:

  • Debt ceiling increase of up to $2.8 trillion
  • Spending cuts of roughly $1 trillion
  • Vote on the Balanced Budget Amendment
  • Special committee to recommend cuts of $1.8 trillion (or whatever it takes to add up to the total of the debt ceiling increase)
  • Committee must make recommendations before Thanksgiving recess
  • If Congress does not approve those cuts by late December, automatic across-the-board cuts go into effect, including cuts to Defense and Medicare.

A senior White House aide pushed back against the idea that a deal was struck.

    @John03

It doesn’t mention the time period over which the cuts would take place.

But it had better not be over 10 years and the cuts had better come from both discretionary and entitlement reform. The cuts to the military had better be regarding waste and abuse and not deep cuts which leaves our country in a hell of a pickle should we need it.

    Everyone needs to chill out!

The balanced budget ammendment…pleez…that’s not a negotiating point. It will shit the bed in the senate.

So here’s the deal. Jest move on. The BOSTON Tea Party in 1773 was a failure. Bunker Hill 1775 Failure.

    Germantown, 1777…failure

and nothing but stalemate and failure…1780 Camden, SC a disaster when my home state had the few victories at this point!

But after 1780, things change. We become so irksome to the British…they finally say screw this! We have the rest of the globe to harass…this just isn’t worth it!

So Tea Partiers…you are all in this for the long haul! The Revolution took 10 years or fight by attrition. Why will this one be any shorter?

We won our independence by making the enemy die of disease quicker than our boys did! As simple as that. They can resupply only by ship! They just couldn’t take it any more. The loss of life to the Americans was far greater than the Brits and their German conscripts combined! Like by almost 4:1 as a total casualties (dead/wounded figure). In fact a turning point may have actually been smallpox vaccinations by the US forces…AMAZING!

So hold in there Tea Party. Read the Art of War. The wise man knows what battles he can and cannot win. This is how all Libbies have gained power over time. So let’s all take a page from the Enema’s book! Strive on People!

Unacceptable. I do not know how many times I have to say this, but any Republican who votes to raise the debt ceiling for any reason is gone in 2012, especially in the House.

Therefore, the only acceptable deal is one with enough immediate cuts that the debt ceiling does not have to be raised.

Barring that, hold the line and shut the government down. Force Obama to make the cuts. You win if you walk away from the table. Cut Cap and Balance was the closest thing you had. This is NONE of the three!

Update II: Via Jeff Dunetz, National Journal’s Major Garrett also gets a similar story from his sources, but the news is a little better:

•2.8 trillion in deficit reduction with $1 trillion locked in through discretionary spending caps over 10 years and the remainder determined by a so-called super committee.
•The Super Committee must report precise deficit-reduction proposals by Thanksgiving.
•The Super Committee would have to propose $1.8 trillion spending cuts to achieve that amount of deficit reduction over 10 years.
•If the Super Committee fails, Congress must send a balanced-budget amendment to the states for ratification. If that doesn’t happen, across-the-board spending cuts would go into effect and could touch Medicare and defense spending.
•No net new tax revenue would be part of the special committee’s deliberations.

This is just a preview. The TP did its best, but until this country is downgraded, and oh it will be, then only will people understand, its not the debt ceiling, IT IS THE DEBT ITSELF!

this is barely slowing the rate of growth of govt, the actual size of gov is untouched.

So, perhaps it will reached 18 trillion next december rather than 17.8 trillion. And with the economy at a standstill, revenues are going down, expenses going up.

This is a very small fight compared to the main event when people realise, the debt ceiling fight is nothing compared to the debt fight. I didn’t realised this until I listened to Ron and Rand Paul on Cavuto’s show on Friday.

A BIG NOTHING! How many times do the rating agencies have to tell them, if they don’t cut spending by 4 trillion in the next few months, the full faith and credit of the USA is CRAP!

More “magic,” gubmint accounting tricks – like calling the already scheduled, winding down of the wars “savings.” These idiots will stand on their heads to avoid doing any real cuts – the bloated, inefficient and wasteful bureaucracy. I could name 100 agencies and commissions that could be shut down 100% and no one would notice except for the whiny gubmint union workers.

The House did it’s job but the Senate is nothing but a bunch of grandstanding bull shitters and smoke blowers. Repeal the 17th Amendment so states can recall Senators who are incompetent and stupid, as was originally drawn up by the Founders. They knew that a bunch of directly elected, gas bags could gum up the works.

What should be done is a budget freeze with a 1% cut/yr until the budget is balanced. All this theatre has been a stop gap until 2012 when the R’s get control of everything again. I’m not saying I have total confidence in them, but they are better than the D’s. The R’s won a small battle, now they’ll have to win the war in 2012.

strangernfict thanks for the info, but if this holds, not only does it get obongo past campaigning, but 280 billion a year in cuts? which will only hold until the next congressional election, this is a slap in the face of the Citizens of this Country who know what needs to be done and are ready to face the consequences,,,,NOW.
Super Committees? This is un-Constitutional. Spending originates in the House and if they DON’T have a budget and just spend as they will, WHAT ARE THE CUTS COMING FROM??? Again, everyone of this Site knows, FROM THE BASE BUDGET WHICH INCREASES ABOUT 8-10% PER YEAR NO MATTER WHAT!!! and a Super Committee on its face takes the power of the purse OUT of Congress.

Another GANG. I can see North Korea from MY window.

We need filibusters and we need them now.

This is all for show as you all know anyway, just look at ZIP’s posts below, the demoncrats are prepping their mindless horde for armed and (un)civil disobedience

Frakking? Terrorists with Bombs strapped on? Playing Russian Roulette with all chambers full? Perversions once again of the Constitution’s 14th Amendment to grab the power of the purse?

I’d say that the obamites are planning to burn the reichstag sometime after they gin up their media attack machine for another ARMAGEDDON sometime after the 1st marker, after Thanksgiving, right around Christmas

ABC is reporting details of a debt talks compromise. After each are my
    thoughts on the item:

A debt ceiling increase of up to $2.1 to $2.4 trillion (depending on
the size of the spending cuts agreed to in the final deal). – Lock it
down and make it the last one. No more.

They have now agreed to spending cuts of roughly $1.2 trillion over 10
years. – Must be real cuts codified in a way that future congresses cannot
simply ignore them. Can this even be done past 2013?

The formation of a special Congressional committee to recommend
further deficit reduction of up to $1.6 trillion (whatever it takes to add
up to the total of the debt ceiling increase). This deficit reduction
could take the form of spending cuts, tax increases or both. – What
doesn’t congress understand about further tax increases?!?!?! Enough with
    the tax increases!

The special committee must make recommendations by late November
(before Congress’ Thanksgiving recess). – Concur.

If Congress does not approve those cuts by December 23, automatic
across-the-board cuts go into effect, including cuts to Defense and
Medicare. This “trigger” is designed to force action on the deficit
reduction committee’s recommendations by making the alternative painful to
both Democrats and Republicans. – Concur.

A vote, in both the House and Senate, on a balanced budget amendment.
    - Concur.

However, if we peel the onion on these, several details stink.

The size of the Medicare cuts is limited and they are designed to be
taken from Medicare providers, not beneficiaries. – I know this will make
me sound like a heartless person, but this has to be equally painful to
both provider and beneficiary. Try getting an Osteopathic Doctor (D.O.)
in/around ########. Obamacare is running doctors out of the business
and further financial burden on doctors, especially family care doctors,
will cause even more to pack up.

The automatic cuts would hit Defense spending harder than Medicare. It
could force congress to face a choice between accepting tax increases (if
that is what the committee recommends) or automatic cuts that would gut
the Pentagon’s budget. – Automatic cuts should be equally distributed.

Finally, unlike the country going to the mall in place of to war these
past 10 years, America is watching what you folks are going right now.
Regardless of the MSM hit pieces and what the DNC/WH hacks are saying,
Americans want cuts now to save America. Do your job or quit and go home.

If these kids are unable to play fair(come to an agreement) they should be put in time out(prison) so that the more mature among us can deal with the issue without the porcine beauty contest.

If these children are unable to do the math what good do we think they are going to be when the literal life or death issue presents itself. Any of us that have paid even cursory attention can understand that the potential for catastrophe arises from many quarters and these folk have convinced themselves that many of us are expendable.

When many of us are expended, whether we consider it or not many of us will be very soon, I hope there are enough of us left healthy enough to retribute what we have received.

Whether we keep going much longer or not, there is only One that we can depend on to supply our need dead or alive: the One that was dead and yet lives and is coming back when the time is right.

We have no more time left to stave off disaster and if congress and the communist president in the white house refuse to make the necessary painful choices in a somewhat controlled fashion, economics 101 will kick in and make those choices for them in a chaotic fashion. Of course this is precisely what Obuttma wants, which is a collapse of the country making the imposition of a communist (not socialist) style government possible and is what we elected the Republicans in 2010 to prevent. Trouble is the Republicans are led by a leadership which has been too long in Washington and is part of the ruling class which buys into the propaganda media crap and refuses to fight for the citizens.

One more thought, notice how the media has managed to insert “defense cuts” into the narrative? Due to the absolutely disastrous foreign policies of this anti-Semitic, totalitarian loving administration the world is a far more dangerous place than three years ago and cutting our military will leave this country in a mortally weakened position. Since the Republicans control the House they had better stop any attempt by Obuttma and the commiecrats to gut our defense. Besides any defense cuts will just be spent on other worthless government programs.

I seriously don’t understand their misunderstanding of what 2010 meant. It was a pivotal moment and it’s only going to come back and haunt those that thought we were only getting our mad-on for that election. The patriots of the Tea Party will start organizing, again, and no, they’ve not lost contact with their newfound friends.

I say, let DC and the rest of the country flounder. If interest rates go to 20% – that may be the only salvation for this country. As long as interest rates are at near zero, someone that can’t afford even that is going to borrow it, then default.
