NY Times On Debt Deal: “Nearly Complete Capitulation To The Hostage-Taking Demands Of Republican Extremists”…

A preview of what’s to come tomorrow, courtesy of The NY Times, which just posted this editorial.

(NY Times) — There is little to like about the tentative agreement between Congressional leaders and the White House except that it happened at all. The deal would avert a catastrophic government default, immediately and probably through the end of 2012. The rest of it is a nearly complete capitulation to the hostage-taking demands of Republican extremists. It will hurt programs for the middle class and poor, and hinder an economic recovery.

It is not yet set in stone, and there may still be time to make it better. But in the end, most Democrats will have no choice but to swallow their fury, accept the deal, and, we hope, fight harder the next time.

For weeks, ever since House Republicans said they would not raise the nation’s debt ceiling without huge spending cuts, Democrats have held out for a few basic principles. There must be new tax revenues in the mix so that the wealthy bear a share of the burden and Medicare cannot be affected.

“For weeks, ever since House Republicans said they would not raise the nation’s debt ceiling without huge spending cuts,……”

But they settled for measly cuts amortized over 10 years that don’t amount to a fart in a hurricane.

“The predictable results of this are as follows:

    (1) There will be more angry White people.

    (2) The political class will lose more of its legitimacy.

    (3) Washington and the Republican establishment will take another haircut in their authority.

    (4) As the economy continues to deteriorate, the Tea Party will experience a second wave of growth, as the perception will increase that Washington does nothing but spend money while lecturing the country.

    (5) Undoubtedly, as we head further down the slope to the bottomless pit of national decline, the taxpaying class will become ever more resentful of having to pay for the tax consuming class.

    (6) To the extent Obama caved, the Left will be furious with him, and their disenchantment with him will only grow from here.

    (7) The GOP will fracture on its right; the Democrats will fracture on their left.

    (8) Look for black people and illegal aliens to act out in some way.

    (9) The states will continue to their long term drift away from the policies of the federal government.”

Seems to me that the long coming political confrontation between Patriot and Tory is dawning. Perhaps it’s time to quote perhaps my favorite founder, Mister Samual Adams-

No people will tamely surrender their Liberties, nor can any be easily subdued, when knowledge is diffused and Virtue is preserved. On the Contrary, when People are universally ignorant, and debauched in their Manners, they will sink under their own weight without the Aid of foreign Invaders.
Source: letter to James Warren, 4 November 1775.

    and now

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Lemme see if I’ve got this straight: According to the Times, the deal features the following points:

    1. Repubs agreed to raise the debt “ceiling” by a massive $2.8 Trillion, which is more than the Dems had even asked for;

    2. The Repubs agreed to do this all in one swoop, which takes it off the table as a pro-GOP, anti-Dem issue for the 2012 elections;

    3. The Dems *ostensibly* agreed to cut a Trillion, or $1.2, or $1.7, or eleventy trillion dollars from future budgets–depending on which paragraph you read–but the cuts are to be at some vague future date, and NO PENALTY WILL ADHERE

  54. sf says:
    August 1, 2011 at 2:56 am

[ham-fingered a mystery key] …will adhere to any Dem if the cuts aren’t made on schedule.

Is this what the Times is bitching and moaning about? Geez, seems to me that the Repubs–as we all predicted–caved in on every point save one: No tax increases. Yeah, that’s fine, but I would far rather have only given the Dems a small bump in the ceiling, so we could debate this *endlessly* in June, July, August of 2012.

Lord, I hope House republicans will kill this–but I doubt they can.

Let’s think about these numbers a second, keeping in mind that our ‘budget’ for 2011 is around $3.8 TRILLION.

We’ve been told the government receives about $200B/month in revenues, or $1.2 Trillion for 6 months. Obama’s debt increase lifeline is $900 Billion, which they estimate he’ll burn through in 6 months.

That means that in 6 months they’ll have spent $2.1 Trillion dollars, or at the rate of $4.2 Trillion/year.

That’s only an increase of 10%/ per anum!

Let’s all take a cue from Pres Reagan. Cheery optimism, belief in America and determination are what work. So I’d like to see us Tea Partiers (and I am one) take a victory lap, celebrate what we have accomplished and plan our next moves.

Read today’s WSJ editorial “Barack Obama the Pessimist”.

“By that Reagan standard, Mr Obama has been a singular failure. The crippling truth of the Obama presidency is the pessimism of the man, the low expectations he has for this republic. He had not come forth to awaken this country to its stirring first principles, but to manage its decline at home and abroad.”

We know we are better than that. We know he’ll be gone in 2012 because we will make it happen. Americans don’t like pessimists.

We are not powerless, people. We’ve just been told we are for so long that we’ve started to believe the worms. Time to stand up and take our power back. Government by the people, for the people worked just fine for a long time, and Communism and Socialism never did, no matter how much our lazy European neighbors want us to think it did.

Barack Obama is insignificant. He is nothing but a hired drive by shooter doing his best to destroy whats good about our country because he has some psychotic problems probably stemming from his childhood that encourage his seething hatred. But he isn’t brilliant. He isn’t cultured. He doesn’t even have the benefit of being a nice guy. And please, spare me on the threats of violence if he is removed from office.
