Vogue Editor Anna Wintour Now One Of Obama’s Top Fundraisers…
(Politico) — From her front row seat at the fall and spring fashion shows, a nod or frown from Anna Wintour can make or break what comes down the runway and send tremors through the fashion industry.
As one of President Barack Obama’s most successful fundraisers, the Vogue editor memorably played as a controlling ice queen by Meryl Streep in “The Devil Wears Prada,” exerts her influence in another way.
In the run-up to the 2012 election, the British-born Wintour is part of an elite group of 27 Obama supporters who have used their connections to each solicit $500,000 for the president’s re-election campaign. In less than a year of making fundraising calls and hosting a string of dinner parties, Wintour has more than tripled the $100,000-plus she helped raise for the campaign in 2008.
The fashion matriarch’s support for Obama is not a complete positive for the Obama campaign. On the one hand, Wintour, who was named the 69th most powerful woman in the world this week by Forbes, brings a certain panache to a campaign that promises to reach the billion dollar mark. On the other, she highlights Obama’s celebrity ties at a time when the administration is tackling a down economy.
Last year, before Wintour, 61, hosted a fundraiser at her Greenwich Village home, the Republican National Committee sent out an e-mail with the subject line “The President Wears Prada.” In their press release, they blasted Obama for his “elitist disconnect from the American people.”

Shame for Vogue. When Palin wins the Presidency think of all those circulation generating Vogue covers of Palin the Magazine will be missing out on. Like Newsweek’s Tina Brown, another British Obama loving editor, Wintour will be beggging Palin to up their circulation & sit for a Vogue cover shoot.

Okay, so against the weaselzippers tide I stick up for Anna Wintour, sort of. Outside of the 10-year-old thing, which already had its untoward precedent anyways with Brooke Shields in Pretty Baby from 1978. Even though glamour – Wintour’s business – is basically a deceit-based process to make something appear better than it really is, and Vogue magazine is all about fashion glamour, admit it: Life would be a drab and dreary rut without at least some measure of glamour, fashion or otherwise.
Doesn’t really matter how much money Wintour or others raise for the crown prince of politics glamour, Obama. After almost three years of him being no better than Bush it’s all their money down the drain, he’s so not re-elected.
And why dump on Wintour for Obama if you’re going to praise pretty boy Perry? Or prefer the more down home glamour of Palin or Bachmann?
Because those three are YOUR preferred versions of glamour?
Stuff that.
And when you dump on Wintour maybe keep in mind that Wintour wouldn’t be where she is doing what she’s doing without millions of ordinary women over the years wanting a little fashion glamour in their lives.
Here’s to hoping that nobody in the private sector goes bankrupt and out of business during and after the Obama plague. And to hoping that we can do better than Perry, Bachmann or Palin in 2012.
