Dem Rep. John Lewis Claims Having To Show ID Before Voting Is A “Poll Tax”…

The dumbest of the dumb.

A Poll Tax by Another Name — John Lewis, NYT op-ed

Despite decades of progress, this year’s Republican-backed wave of voting restrictions has demonstrated that the fundamental right to vote is still subject to partisan manipulation. The most common new requirement, that citizens obtain and display unexpired government-issued photo identification before entering the voting booth, was advanced in 35 states and passed by Republican legislatures in Alabama, Minnesota, Missouri and nine other states — despite the fact that as many as 25 percent of African-Americans lack acceptable identification.

Having fought for voting rights as a student, I am especially troubled that these laws disproportionately affect young voters. Students at state universities in Wisconsin cannot vote using their current IDs (because the new law requires the cards to have signatures, which those do not). South Carolina prohibits the use of student IDs altogether. Texas also rejects student IDs, but allows voting by those who have a license to carry a concealed handgun. These schemes are clearly crafted to affect not just how we vote, but who votes.

Conservative proponents have argued for photo ID mandates by claiming that widespread voter impersonation exists in America, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. While defending its photo ID law before the Supreme Court, Indiana was unable to cite a single instance of actual voter impersonation at any point in its history. Likewise, in Kansas, there were far more reports of U.F.O. sightings than allegations of voter fraud in the past decade. These theories of systematic fraud are really unfounded fears being exploited to threaten the franchise. . . .

These restrictions purportedly apply to all citizens equally. In reality, we know that they will disproportionately burden African Americans and other racial minorities, yet again. They are poll taxes by another name.

The Weekly Standard has this to say on Lewis’ bizarre claims voter fraud is an “unfounded fear” and as uncommon as “U.F.O. sightings.”

As for Lewis’ insistence that voter impersonation is not a concern, let me help him out here. Earlier this year, ACORN plead guilty to voter registration fraud in Nevada. Here’s an exhaustive list of ACORN employees who’ve run afoul of voter registration laws since 1998, resulting in dozens of arrests and convictions. Here’s an SEIU-affiliated voter registration group that submitted a huge amount of invalid voter registrations in one Texas county. To say concern over voter registration fraud amounts to “unfounded fears” is abject nonsense.

If it is, is Lewis suggesting that everyone does NOT have to pay “their fair share”?

    545 vs. 300,000,000 People
    – By Charlie Reese

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.

Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?

Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?

You and I don’t propose a federal budget. The President does.

You and I don’t have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.

You and I don’t write the tax code, Congress does.

You and I don’t set fiscal policy, Congress does.

You and I don’t control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one President, and nine Supreme Court justices equates to 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.

I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a President to do one cotton-picking thing. I don’t care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator’s responsibility to determine how he votes.

Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party

What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits. The President can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.

The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? John Boehner. He is the leader of the majority party. He and fellow House members, not the President, can approve any budget they want. If the President vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.

It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million cannot replace 545 people who stand convicted — by present facts — of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can’t think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.

If the tax code is unfair, it’s because they want it unfair.

If the budget is in the red, it’s because they want it in the red.

If the Army & Marines are in Iraq and Afghanistan it’s because they want them in Iraq and Afghanistan.

If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it’s because they want it that way.

There are no insoluble government problems.

Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like “the economy”,”inflation,” or “politics” that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.

Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.

They, and they alone, have the power.

They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses.

Provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees.

We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess.

It’s simply him whining about losing the CRIMINAL vote and packaging it as racism.

“25 percent of African-Americans lack acceptable identification” and he named three states in particular:

    http://dmvanswers.com/questions/419/How-much-do-state-ID-cards-cost

    Alabama: $23
Minnesota: $16, $11 for those 65 and up
    Missouri: $11

OK, if he’s implying that 25% of blacks are too poor to afford the $11-23 it costs to get and ID then they would have set up a program years ago to help people pay for them–and they probably have such programs. Hell, taxpayer money going towards getting legal residents free ID cards is the least of my worries.

No, he knows the populations most affected by this law would be minority criminals (who don’t want to register with the government for any reason and would prefer to stay “off the grid” with their fake IDs) or illegals.

The Democrats can get criminals and illegals to be bused in to vote without issue, but make them need an ID, and few will go.

Asking that people identify themselves before engaging in an official state actions is nothing new. The concept in embodied in the 6th Amendment to the US Constitution in the form of the ‘Confrontation Clause’.

Like many American legal practices, the practice can be traced back to English Common Law to “protect the right of cross-examination”. In the same way that every person has the right to face his accuser, every American has the right to confront political ideas with his vote.

When government fails to keep corruption out of the ballot box, it is committing an act of gross negligence against a legitimate voter. Elections have been manipulated before.

    ——

“It is not the manner of the Romans to deliver any man up to die before the accused has met his accusers face-to-face, and has been given a chance to defend himself against the charges.”

No, sir, let’s review what a TAX is: it’s something you guys can’t live without, because without it, YOUR job becomes meaningless. The requirement of showing a valid ID is no where NEAR a “tax” because it is simply good common sense, something which you apparently lack. And requiring it for the purpose of validating legal residents in a given voting precinct is the RESPONSIBLE thing to do, therefore NOT doing it is irresponsible, reckless, and “almost treasonous” since the result of not doing it harms the very thing your and my ancestors fought and died to protect– THE RIGHT TO VOTE.

  30. gastorgrab says:
    August 28, 2011 at 8:26 pm

Just an observation, but if any person who felt disenfranchised by being asked for ID, and filed charges against the state governments, THEY WOULD HAVE TO IDENTIFY THEMSELVES TO THE COURT. A person accused of a crime can still be prosecuted when they refuse to identity themselves, but an accuser who refuses to identity himself has no Constitutional grounds to file charges.

There is no such thing as a ‘general victim’. A person was either victimized, or they weren’t.

The left is stuck in this collective mind-set where they see rights as being based on identity factors. They can’t get it through their heads that all of their rights are INDIVIDUAL rights.

Racial discrimination is a violation of individual rights, not black rights.
    .

Its a shame that some Blacks who fought hard to get to be representatives in Congress have become nothing more than partisan politicians.

To misstate the purpose of a vote ID demonstrates Cummings reason for the objection. He doesn’t care about the integrity of the voting process, only whatever degree of inconvenience showing an ID would impose on a citizen.

As long as Cummings and others cling to the past….they will forever be consigned to living there, unhappy and indifferent to whatever advances
    are made.

One would think that any group having fought for the right to vote, whether it be women or blacks…., that they would be honored to show their identification in order to vote. Why aren’t they proud? Shouldn’t every one be concerned that their vote might be taken and abused?

What exactly do they have to be proud OF?

Highest drop out rates from High Schools nation wide.

Highest incarceration rates on average, nation wide.

Tallest Chinese statue in America, Martin Luther Ming.

John Lewis. THE icon. Dragged out on Lib channels period-
ically, on cue, for his views about “civil-rights”…for 30(?)
years. I, for one, am tired of hearing his story. America
should be tired seeing them prop him up at a microphone
to chastise the Right…he’s aging, losing his faculties a bit,
but I’m tired of hearing about his sainthood status for
50(?) years from getting a baton-bump on the noggin
from a DEMOCRAT, white sheriff on a bridge in Alabama
    an eon ago!

Anything anyone in AMERICA asks or demands from the
    “Afro-American” community is a NO-GO from the get-go!
They have special status…and their race-baiting industry
requires that, as a group, they DON’T EVER capitulate
with WHITEY. If they ever did, their guilt-based special
status would evaporate….and Jackson, Sharpton, Waters,
    Conyers, Cleaver, Watt, Jackson-Lee, …ad infinitum…
would be joining the jobless rolls.

How many times ya watched ‘Cops” with a brother pulled over, no license, no registration, no insurance, with warrants? If there was an ID law, Lewis and the Dems know damn well very few blacks are gonna go to the trouble of getting a voter ID. They might have to give their real name instead of Lil’ Redd, or c-ray or Puff Diddly.

This doofis, pompous, leftist, blowhard fails to realize that not showing ID could also be used as a means to eliminate minority candidates. In the county where I live many whites vote for minority candidates in both parties. This is not the 50′s or the 60′s some of these old politicians are trapped in the past and are unwilling to change, it blows their minds when someone of their own race will think for them selves instead of marching in locked step, and toeing the party line.

Why don’t we allow the race card as an acceptable form of I.D.? It’s free and they use it for everything else.

The John Lewis heir to the throne of “Untouchable on account
of Civil-Rights history” is near-look-alike Elijah “Muhammed”
Cummings from Md. This Heckle & Jeckle tag-team have been
at it for YEARS! Barf-bag alert for me whenever I see their
mugs on TV….usually MSNBC. (I admit to watching this train

Lewis doesn’t care who on planet earth votes in American elections as long as they pull the lever marked ‘D’. He’d be happy to see the gray aliens in the voting booths if they voted Democrat.

I can appreciate the hard times Lewis probably went through, but the country is not Alabama in 1960. These guys are stuck in a time warp plus it gives them political power.

He’s wrong , the voter id law discriminates against lazy idiots of all races. Lewis is just claiming most of them in the name of blacks.

since the people that are elected control how much taxes we pay then only tax payers should be aloud to vote. with 50% of the people not paying taxes what do think they will vote for, more taxes to be paid by the tax payers to support the non payers.

Dems hate picture ID required for voting because it limits theur vote fraud opportunities, plain and simple. In his senility, Lewis has become nothing more than a “pull the string and I’ll accuse someone of racism” doll.

Your argument doesn’t hold up buddy. Let’s face it, you won’t win doing it legitimately. Get an ID with a signature or don’t vote.
