Bad Idea: Turkey Sending Three Warships To Eastern Mediterranean To Protect Gaza-Bound Ships From Israeli Navy…

And Israel will send them to the bottom of the Mediterranean if they get out of line.

(JPost) — Turkey is planning to send three warships to the Eastern Mediterranean to defend against Israeli vessels if necessary and ensure freedom of navigation for Turkish ships, Today’s Zaman reported on Monday.

The Turkish ships will provide protection for ships bringing humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and confront Israeli warships outside of Israel’s territorial waters if necessary, according to the report.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan saw “grounds for war” with Israel last year after a deadly raid on a Turkish ship headed for Gaza, according to a transcript of a recent interview.

State news agency Anatolia released late on Sunday what it said was an original Turkish-language transcript of an interview Erdogan gave to Al Jazeera television last week. It included elements not broadcast as well as original wording for sensitive comments that had been transmitted only in Arabic translation.

Among previously unpublished elements, Erdogan said the IDF’s deadly raid last year on a Turkish ship headed for Gaza would have justified going to war: “The attack that took place in international waters did not comply with any international law. In fact, it was grounds for war. However, befitting Turkey’s greatness, we decided to act with patience,” he said.

The transcript in Turkish from Anatolian, apparently provided by Erdogan’s office, also gave the following account of the prime minister’s response to a question on what Turkey would do to ensure free passage for its ships in the Mediterranean.

“Right now, without a doubt, the primary duty of Turkish navy ships is to protect its own ships,” Erdogan said.

Does Israel have submarines? Why can’t the “Palestinians” live peacefully with Israelis like the 1.5 million (20% of total population) Muslim Arabs who are Israeli citizens? The answer of course is Islamist ideology. The “Palestinians” are held captive by the violent jihadists in their midst. Western politicians must realize this fact. Fundamentalist Muslims will NEVER accept the existence of a “Jewish” state.

They’d be there not to be some kind of referees, but as BACKUP for Israeli forces, LAND, AIR and SEA. Palestinian scumbags launch a terrorist attack? They end up running afoul of USN SeALs or Army Rangers (or even Special Forces). Raghead fleet from Turkey coming in? They know they’re heading right into the firepower of cruisers, frigates and our last remaining BATTLESHIP.

Last heard the US has 1 or 2 Carrier groups in the Persian Gulf. I think Obama deployed them there to protect Iran from an Israeli attack.

Of course, once Iran has workable nukes, we will have to withdraw our carrier forces and will not be able to project significant surface naval assets into the Persian Gulf.

Israel has to protect the Leviathan gas fields, send some Dolphins into the Persian Gulf with cruise missiles to take care of Iran’s nuclear factories, and deal with Turkish and Egyptian naval forces.

That’s a lot of trouble for a small navy.

Obama and the US State Department have betrayed Israel. The US has all but guaranteed Iranian nukes and a regional war. Israel cannot depend on the US for resupply. The US may have left Israel with no conventional choices.

Put not your faith in princes.

Many individuals on here are commenting based on cultural stigmas and myth.

Here are some facts for you to consider before making absurd comments:

Many IDF soldiers have worked side by side with the Turks during “Reliant Mermaid” naval exercises (held between the US, Turkey and Israel in the past) and they know first hand the military capabilities of each other.

First and foremost before commenting on the Turkish Republic I highly recommend that you do a quick Google search on the Turkish Navy and the word “MILGEM” before commenting on here.

The Turks have 19 modern guided missile frigates (heavily modernized Oliver Hazard Perry class, MEKO class and MILGEM class), 14 Advanced German-Turkish submarines (Type 209 SSK’s similar to the Israeli Dolphin class), 7 Corvettes and 104 Fast attack craft.

All Turkish Navy frigates have Mk-41 VLS launch systems with the ability to fire NATO standard Evolved Sea Sparrow missiles (ESSM) against incoming airborne threats (such as combat aircraft and anti-ship missiles). They also have the ability to fire SM-1 missiles.

All Turkish naval surface combatants also operate AGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles and Anti-submarine helicopters (Sikorsky SH-60) which are commonly known as “Submarine Hunter-killers”.

These are not toys but highly lethal highly advanced weapons that only a handful of NATO members possess.

Turkish Naval assets can neutralize any airborne threat such as the F-16 and F-15 in the IAF inventory far beyond visual range and with almost 95% accuracy.

All Turkish military assets have their own cryptology and counter-electronic jamming capabilities which prevent any external electronic interference. Accordingly, one cannot successfully use electronic warfare techniques against these systems to neutralize them.

The missiles in the Turkish inventory in addition to GPS guidance use INS and have Terrain Referenced Navigation, Automatic Target Recognition Imaging Infrared Seekers and TERCOM features, thus making them operational even in the event that the USA disables the GPS satellite network.

The Turks also have indigenous Link 16/22 equivalent data exchange systems making them part of a handful of countries which have a true network centric armed force.

There are plenty of armchair generals out there, but just ask the military professionals before you comment. I know that the Turks lack in many regards but I also know one of their core strengths that is there military, which happens to be the world’s sixth (6th) largest and NATO’s second largest after the US armed forces.

They have been armed to the teeth against soviet aggression and have always been ready against a Russian attack. Their army alone with 4,500 tanks and 6,500 APC’s dwarfs all its neighbors armies combined.

Unfortunately, the lives of innocent 18-22 year old Israeli and Turkish conscripts are on the line here. These “mine is bigger than yours” comments are just absurd and irrelevant. Get a grip and come to reality.

Oliver reminds us that Turkey is not the stereotypical Islamic shit-hole. For decades, it was a secular state, existing on the outskirts of Europe, involved in Europe and Middle Eastern politics and economics. Its government and economy are heavily influenced by European models. It is a member of NATO for a reason, and even petitioned to be a member of the European Union. In many regards, Turkey and Israel are similar.

This is not like Iraq sending some gun-boat into the Mediterranean…these are highly advanced weapons.

@Simon- Not quite. The Turks have no shortage of scientists or universities. German academics of Turkish ethnicity are also very active in Turkey. The Turks develop a vast majority of their military technology and are becoming less reliant on us. Although not widely known by the lay person many NATO member countries use some form of Turkish designed and produced military systems. One of their biggest achievements is the MILGEM class stealth corvette/frigates and the Altay tank. The moral of the story is that ToT is not a one way highway. We are also benefiting from the Turks in some way shape and form.
Turkey also has a very robust and industrialized economy. They are now the second fastest growing economy in the world. There stature is growing exponentially and we cannot afford to loose them.

@mrteachersir- The mistake we make is that we write off and disregard all Muslims as dumb barbarians suffering from religious mania. The reality is that a vast majority of the non-arab Muslims do not fit this stereotype (Turkey, Azerbeijan, Kazakstan, Indonesia etc). They are decent people with no desire for conflict. Turkey has been beside us during the Korean war, cold war, 9/11, Kosovo, Afghanistan etc They are in NATO for a reason. Turkey is an indispensable ally in the Islamic world for us.

  40. ThomNJ says:

OK – here is my two cents – though this may or may not be relevant. Lots of Turks also live in Germany, and one of the key issues to rising islamic fundamentalism in Germany relates to Germany’s laws against another nation providing religious education. The Turks were peaceful in Germany, and then the country started having problems with some fundamentalists after Germany told Turkey that it could no longer provide korans and religious training literature to the Turks there. That void was filled by the Saudis. Not the Saudi government directly, but recall that the Saudi royals made a deal to stay in power long ago with the religious fundamentalists. The royal family rules the governmet, and the clerics rule the religious aspects. The school of islam, so to speak, stepped in to Germany and started pushing the fundamentalism – and they met the legal requirements by not being a “country”. In a way, Germany shot it self in the foot. (Just as we have here in the USA). Sorry for the rather hurried explanation, but I have no doubt that some of this fundamentalism filtered backwards into Turkey as well. This might also have something to do with the rise in fundamentalism and somewhat of a reversal of the secular state within Turkey.

    Just a thought.

  41. mrteachersir says:
    September 13, 2011 at 8:30 am

@Oliver: Therein lies the problem we are facing: Turkey WAS an indispensible ally in the Islamic world to Israel as well, as was Egypt (well, at least they could count on Egypt not bombing them…). Now, as Turkey becomes an Islamic nation (as a opposed to a nation of Muslims), Turkey ceases to be an ally to Israel and strains its relationship with us. This strain was evident in 2003, when we sought approval to use Turkish airspace in our efforts to unseat Saddam, but were denied (unlike ten years earlier).

  46. Oliver says:
    September 13, 2011 at 11:47 pm

@Templar223 – It is about time that you inform your “boss” about the Nuclear capability that the Turks also have which is not widely known.
    (1) Turkey has a nuclear weapons sharing treaty with Pakistan. Accordingly, it has access to Pakistani nuclear weapons.
    (2) Turkey is part of the NATO nuclear sharing agreement. As such it has 90 B-61 nuclear warheads stationed on its soil in Adana, Turkey. 40 of these are under direct Turkish command.
    (3) Even if for sum reason Turkey cannot use the B-61 warheads (due to source codes etc) Turkey can effectively use the fissile weapons grade uranium contained in these weapons to create a “weaker” form of dirty nuclear bomb. Turkey has J-600T ballistic missiles in its inventory developed together with the Peoples Republic of China which can deliver these “dirty bombs” to Tel Aviv at short notice. The Turks also has higly specialised Stand-off cruise missiles (Google “SOM Missile”).
I repeat we are not dealing with a 3rd world country here but rather a successor state to a former empire who has been at the forefront of European politics for the past 600 years. A state which has the world’s 6th largest military. A country which is home to the 3rd holliest sites in Islam (Destructon of these holly sites alone is enough to trigger war on a large scale). We need to step in and mediate between the Turks and Israeli’s there is alot at stake here.

The Israeli government has to simply choose between the two following options:

    (1) Loose the ego, apologize to Turkey for something that they believe they are not responsible for, suffer some form of embarrassment and eventually resume relations with its former ally. As far as I recall all Turkey is asking for is an apology for the 9 dead.

    (2) Do not apologize to Turkey, fuel the rift between the two countries and eventually go to war. Be responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of 18-22 year old conscripts from both sides.

    My view:
People apologize on a daily basis when they accidently shoulder barge someone or when they collide with someone and knock their coffee down when they walk in their path because their head faces the ground when the other walks. Going to war because your ego does not allow you to apologize is a little absurd. Human life is not that cheap. Just apologize and neutralize the excuse the Turks have to isolate you.
