(CNS News) — The Obama administration’s focus on what Americans eat includes Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, who said on Monday that Americans will “adjust” their tastes to the food the government says is best for people to eat.

Beyond just being a might too much “big brother”ish, this will ultimately result in a perfect example of how when government seeks to fix something it perceives as a problem (i.e. too much salt in the American diet), it creates another even bigger problem.
In our highly processed foods culture, where we want to buy everything in a box at the grocery store on demand (as opposed to eating fresh when it’s in season), sodium serves as a preservative. The problem will be that if you reduce the use of sodium in these foods, then that preservative property will need to be replaced by something else.
Cranking up the corn syrup is one possibility, as that is also used for it’s ability to improve shelf life. I’m sure there are other possibilities as well, but none of them will improve the healthiness of food (and some will probably reduce it).
There are probably a number of highly processed, yet marginally edible chemical compounds in development right now just waiting for approval.
I will have some fries with my salt thank you very much.
Look at it this way.
If we eat too much salt, how much should we eat? There is no definitive answer of guideline.
Salt aggravates high blood pressure. If you do not have high blood pressure, then guess what?
If you were red headed and light skinned (a soulless ginger) the sun would be very rough on you, otherwise it is typically not a problem. Replace ginger/high blood pressure and sun/salt.

As a physiological fact, you do adjust your taste. No salt tastes normal if you don’t eat salt for a while, and any salt tastes way too salty.
I see… so millions of years of human evolution which created our tastes and desires for salt in our diet can be overturned by Obama.
