(TheDC) — Life was simpler in the fictional town of Mayberry, N.C., where “The Andy Griffith Show” was set, and images of Sheriff Andy Taylor and his son Opie evoke a more prosperous America. But did the mystique of that setting include a 90 percent tax rate on the wealthy?
On MSNBC Wednesday, appearing from the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., director and producer Ron Howard said he would be open to the wealthy paying more taxes.
“Well, to be honest, I remember on the ‘Andy Griffith Show’ when income taxes for the upper levels were as much as 90 percent,” Howard said. “And that’s the era that we often look back to with great nostalgia and it was a time of tremendous growth. So you know, I’m not averse to paying some taxes to try to help the country grow and help the economy grow.”

In fact, it was during this period in our nation’s history that the tax code became infamous for special language slipped into legislation by congressmen and senators to protect individuals and closely held companies from paying these high rates of taxation. Of course, no favors or money actually changed hands to accomplish these special favors. As I recall, Senator Albert Gore, Sr. was practically owned by Armand Hammer and his Occidental Petroleum Company. That’s how Albert Gore, Jr. got his interest in the zinc mine in Tennessee that paid him a handsome royalty for decades. Oh yes, let’s return to the good old days of Andy and Opie and Barney Fife. In the meantime, anyone who feels guilty about their low rate of taxation is free to write a check, especially if they really like the way their money is being wasted by this administration.

I will agree with him about being nostalgic about those days, but it certainly wasn’t taxes.
It was an era when you could let your child watch tv without surpervision, because of the filth they might find.

What he fails to mention is that when the top tax rate was 94%, the lowest tax rate was 42%. Seems that all the folks wanting to increase taxes on the “rich” don’t want to face the fact that there was a commensurate with a tax increase on the poor. THAT’S what I call spreading the sacrifice.
