Moochtastic! Queen Michelle Flashes Her $42,150 Diamond Cuffs

(HoustonCultureMap.com) — That was no ordinary bling on the wrist of First Lady Michelle Obama at the DNC fundraiser in New York Tuesday night. Those fancy diamond cuffs were the creation of 23-year-old Katie Decker, whose namesake jewelry line has been making a serious splash since her graduation from Texas A&M two years ago.
The native Houstonian is over the moon with the fab pub that photos of the first lady in Katie Decker are already providing. Michelle Obama’s stylist picked up the bracelets at Katie’s showroom in Fragments in Soho. You can see more photos of the Obamas from the evening here by checking out the Gotham Hall event.
If you’ve been saving your nickels and dimes, the cuffs are available locally at Judith Ann Jewels. The First Lady wore Katie’s Lotus cuff priced at $15,000 with 2.9 carats of diamonds, her Gothic cuff at $15,350 with 2.17 carats in diamonds and the Quatrefoil bracelet at $11,800 with 1.73 carats in diamonds.
As Katie continues her rise in the ranks of jewelry design she has participated in Couture, the trade show for jewelery designers, in Las Vegas and has now been accepted for the Centurion Jewelry Show in Scottsdale, Ariz.

True Story: Not too long ago, while wlaking through my woods looking for deer skulls, whcih “somehow” end up on my property, often, I found a 7th century, brass/ silver & glass pastettes, florettes and whatnots, cuff style bracelet, had it looked at and certified as authentic and donated it to a museum here…heres the email from the museum I gave it too…

From the pictures, it looks to me as if this bracelet comes from the
Aures region of Algeria. The curious clasp, which doesn’t close, is
typical of this region, and not found anywhere else that I know of.
The heavy form and cast decoration of lozenges and rosettes, and the
kind of flash round the clasp, are also typical of Aures. You can see
examples of very similar bracelets in any book which covers this
region. Examples include:
Bijoux Berberes d’Algerie, Henriette Camps-Fabrer, pp 50 and 111
Bijoux et Bijoutiers de l’Aures, Tatiana Benfoughal, pp 168-170, 172
These examples are all made of silver alloy, and are often set with
red or green glass pastes. If your bracelet is from Aures, it is very
unlikely to be made of gold, which was not approved by the tribal
people there. Like all jewellery made for the conservative taates of
tribal peoples, the design and patterns are very old, maybe dating
back to pre-Islamic times. These is a lot more about the traditions
and practice of silversmithing in Aures in both the books I mentioned,
although they are written in French.

The bracelets are very pretty—but what a ripoff!
2.9 carats of diamonds—in aggregate—for fifteen thousand dollars? Those are chips, for crying out loud, not full-cut stones, except (maybe) for the stones in the center of the quatrefoils.
The designs, based on Gothic tracery, are very nice; but there’s not a lot of gold in them, and whether they are castings or stampings, they are mass-produced.
Figure the jeweler is making anywhere from five to seven thousand dollars profit on these items.
That’s five to seven thousand per bracelet, of course.
Who’s paying for this? Why aren’t any of the spineless Refuglicans challenging this kind of crap?
