N.C. Dem Gov. Beverly Perdue: Hey, Let’s “Suspend” Elections Until We Fix America…

(New Observer) — Speaking to a Cary rotary club today, N.C. Gov. Bev Perdue suggested suspending Congressional elections for two years so that Congress can focus on economic recovery and not the next election.
“I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won’t hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover. I really hope that someone can agree with me on that,” Perdue said. “You want people who don’t worry about the next election.”
The comment — which came during a discussion of the economy — perked more than a few ears. It’s unclear whether Perdue, a Democrat, is serious — but her tone was level and she asked others to support her on the idea.

The first was former Obama budget guru Peter Orszag, who argued yesterday in TNR that Congress should rely more heavily on independent commissions (like IPAB!) and automatic “triggers” of the sort that are guiding the Super Committee’s work on deficit reduction. His idea is much milder than Perdue’s — those commissions and triggers would, after all, be set by Congress itself, and therefore could be undone by Congress if need be — but the fact that you have former White House advisors and current Democratic governors now chattering idly about how to insulate Congress from angry voters is not, shall we say, a happy trend. Sorry but, Bev’s press secretary, Chris Mackey’s, sad attempt to spin this as hyperbole isn’t cutting it. Her statement was in context both inthe forum in which she was speaking and with the political climate within the liberal, Democrat aparatchiks. Her last blurb of “I really hope someone can agree with on that.” puts the lie to any claim that this was hyperbole. The Dems KNOW they are in trouble come 2012 and everyone of them, no doubt, are thinking the same thing as Bev actually stated. I am from NC. Perdue is a worse Governor in our history. She will be a one-term Governor. In NC, our unemployment and taxes are so high. It is so corrupt.
