Obama: If I Lose Reelection, Government Will Tell People “You’re On Your Own”…

Is that a threat or a promise?

(ABC News) — At a million-dollar San Francisco fundraiser today, President Obama warned his recession-battered supporters that if he loses the 2012 election it could herald a new, painful era of self-reliance in America.

“The one thing that we absolutely know for sure is that if we don’t work even harder than we did in 2008, then we’re going to have a government that tells the American people, ‘you are on your own,’” Obama told a crowd of 200 donors over lunch at the W Hotel.

“If you get sick, you’re on your own. If you can’t afford college, you’re on your own. If you don’t like that some corporation is polluting your air or the air that your child breathes, then you’re on your own,” he said. “That’s not the America I believe in. It’s not the America you believe in.”

Obama and Democrats have been emphasizing what they see as the costly consequences of the Republicans’ agenda in an effort to stir up support, in part by touching on emotional nerves.

Last week, Obama supporters pounced on comments by Republican presidential frontrunner Mitt Romney that the solution to the nation’s housing crisis is “don’t try and stop the foreclosure process. Let it run its course and hit the bottom.”

Today, Obama cast Republicans’ hands-off approach as harmful to middle class families, who he says deserve government help.

“I reject an argument that says we’ve got to roll back protections that ban hidden fees by credit card companies, or rules that keep our kids from being exposed to mercury, or laws that prevent the health insurance industry from exploiting people who are sick,” Obama said. “And I reject the idea that somehow if we strip away collective bargaining rights, that we’ll be somehow better off.

“You’re on your own” is the quintessential American virtue. It means you alone are responsible for your destiny. You have all the freedom and all the power to make yourself whatever you want to be, and government will not stand in your way.

This is the opposite of the Democrat vision, which compounds regulation upon regulation until only the rich can make money, because the non-rich cannot start new businesses due to the expense of regulatory compliance.

In the Democrat world, you need a lawyer to tell you where to step and when to breath, lest you be sued for all you’ve got.

That is not the America of our birthright, and when Obama is out, we will expose the lies of the statist party and show America that only way to improve your lot in live is to live free.

I’m kinda of stunned that this is the argument they and he are planning to make. No one is saying not to have resonable regulations to keep the air clean, protect consumers, etc.

But the EPA is now making rules to justify its own existance, the Dodd-Frank bill only strenghtens big banks and hurts small local banks, and the bill was not to protect consumers, it was to take over another industry, same with healthcare. People like me, independents, wanted resonable protections, however we don’t want the govt to dictate how a industry works, etc, the healthcare bil should have allowed cross state competiions like car insurance, instead, the fed govt has now taken over that industry, and making everyone buy what they tell them to buy.

Americans are never on their own, but the misguided attempt to replace charity and neighbors with the government must come to an end. Charity and help have consequences, these are some of the strongest ties that bind a community together and make it strong enough to weather any storm. But this only works up to the point where you know the person you are receiving charity from or giving charity to. The moment it becomes impersonal the ties are severed, and over time the foundation of that community becomes too week to hold together. A little bit of government is good, too much is poison, and we are far into the poison part of the spectrum.

    fuster aka custer:

I notice that you are at the typical behavior. On some other thread you were talking about lawyers. The issue about the lawyers is that over the years there has become more & more trial lawyers that do not act on behalf of the overall American good. Furthermore, it goes back to the ever expanding over-reach of government.

I was hoping there would be a place of reasoning that you would understand, but more & more observation simply tells me that you may have a lot of head knowledge but your better common sense is lost.

Hickster, there are NOT more and more trial lawyers that do not act for the public good.

there are many lawyers in the US and there have always been many lawyers in the US and it’s not true that more of them are selfish now than in the past.

lawyers were just as sleazy when my father-in-law went to law school and just as sleazy when I did,

“…or rules that keep our kids from being exposed to mercury,…”

Yet here we are being forced by that very government to buy mercury light bulbs. Without a clue as how they’re going to clean up all the mercury that ends up in the landfills and seeps into our ground water because people don’t know or will not dispose of them properly.

    Hypocrite in so many ways.

O is almost unbelieveable – repeating something doesn’t make it true – time for him to leave us “on our own” – please God.

God bless America, our troops, Israel, and fellow humans.

56 Signers of the Declaration of Independence

    19 ‘lawyers’

and really, f(ruitcake)uster, what difference does it make? I mean, that was over 100 years ago, at least, they didn’t even talk or write so that we could understand them way back then

    responding to ZIP’s post

This divisive rhetoric is historic for a President. We should never let a President talk like this. We should impeach this man for trying to overthrow our government.

Being “on your own” is something the Nothing Man has never had to experience. His entire fraudulent persona is the work of others. The Nothing Man on his own has never accomplished or created anything. He simply cannot comprehend how anybody can accomplish their goals and get through life on their own.

If I did not harbor so much hatred for him I could almost feel sorry for him, for he is truly a Nothing Man.

“You’re on your own” is the quintessential American virtue. It means you alone are responsible for your destiny. You have all the freedom and all the power to make yourself whatever you want to be, and government will not stand in your way.

Quintessential American myth is more like it. I don’t understand how anyone over the age of 12, at the outside, can continue to believe this.

“You’re on your own.” Funny, he says it like it’s a bad thing.

I remember clearly the exhilaration I felt during my second year of engineering school when my dear sainted mother, upset that I had failed to drive from where I was employed as a student engineer to visit her over a Memorial Day weekend, sat me down for a heart-to-heart about life. When she saw I was adamant about not automatically adapting to her schedule, she announced that I would henceforth be on my own. She said it like it would be a bad thing, too. Funny, I think she knew right away that she had miscalculated. So, yeah, I finished school ON MY OWN, became a professional engineer ON MY OWN, qualified for a graduate fellowship and earned a masters in management ON MY OWN … Well, you get the idea. Of course, “on my own” includes lots of help and guidance from my Lord and Savior who gets all the glory. But, sorry Barry, no help from the gub’mint.

@KathyKattenburg: what part of self-reliance, self-determination, or individual liberty do you not understand? Or are you willing to trade away your freedom for … what?

Sorry, Michael, I don’t believe you did all that totally on your own with no help from anyone except your Lord and Savior. No one gets through life totally on their own with no help from anyone.

what part of self-reliance, self-determination, or individual liberty do you not understand? Or are you willing to trade away your freedom for … what?

Part of self-reliance is knowing where to turn and who to turn to for help — which obviously means that there must BE sources of help. I have overcome enormous obstacles, tragedies, and struggles in my life, but I have not done it entirely on my own, and I couldn’t have done it entirely on my own. It’s just not humanly possible to stand entirely on your own with no help from anyone. There are too many things in life over which we have no or very little control. I think you probably already know this, but you and others who talk about “self-reliance” and “self-determination” as if it means you’re moving through life and through the world with all powers and all control and all autonomy, simply discount all the ways in which you need help and seek help and get help.
