Dem Rep. Jerrold Nadler Says He Hopes Deficit Supercommittee Fails So Military Will Be Gutted…
Spoken like a true liberal.
(OTM) — A Democratic legislator said it would be fine with him if the supercommittee failed to reach agreement and steep, automatic cuts to domestic and defense spending happened.
“I hope that they cannot reach an agreement,” Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) said, according to Capital New York.
Some Democrats have suggested that they might have the upper hand in the negotiations because of the rare opportunity for deep reductions in defense spending — something some Democrats have wished for before.
Nadler said there should be significant cuts to military spending. “I think we should have large military cuts,” Nadler added.
The supercommittee is nearing its Thanksgiving deadline to come up with a deficit-reduction proposal. As part of the deal to raise the federal debt ceiling that President Obama made with Republicans in August, the panel is charged with finding at least $1.2 trillion in deficit savings. If the panel is not able to, an automatic trigger of $1.2 trillion in cuts occurs — half of the $1.2 trillion would be cut from federal domestic spending and half from defense spending.

If it fails, the D’s get a Win on gutting the defense budget, a Win on gutting the medicare budget (they gut it in Obamacare also), a Win on raising the debt ceiling by another trillion, and a Win on getting to blame the Republicans on all of the above. Even better, they don’t even have to get a vote to pass to achieve any of this – they just need to ensure that whatever the committee comes up with fails to pass the House or Senate, either will do.
The R’s get – nothing. Worse than nothing – 3 things happen that they don’t want, and they get blamed for it.
Whoever agreed to it (Boehner, McConnell) got rolled. Harry Reid is an evil genius.
How could they not know the D’s were desperate to cut Medicare, so long as they didn’t get the blame (assuming D’s would fight to prevent the Medicare cuts was the basis of the R agreement on the Supercommittee structure)? Obamacare is funded by taking $500 Billion out of Medicare and an additional $250 Billion out of Medicare Advantage. It even creates a new federal bureaucracy with a single mandate: find more ways to cut Medicare. The D’s want to redirect a massive amount of healthcare spending away from seniors and towards ‘the poor’ (ie. aways from R voters and towards D voters). Their problem is they don’t want to be on record voting for this – they can’t, politically, afford to take the blame.
The national debt will be ~16.5 Trillion by Jan 2013, the defense budget will be hollowed out, Medicare benefits will be a shadow of what it once was (probably necessary, actually).
Plan ahead: Don’t count on Medicare being there for your retirement, at least not with anywhere near the level of benefits it has now. When R’s take control, they’ll likely restore the defense budget. They won’t restore the Medicare benefits.

If you really want to get to Nadler, just close all the military installations in New York. Back when they first started shutting down bases, Pat Schroeder (D-CO) was the biggest anti-military POS in Congress. The minute Fort Carson was put on the list, she dropped to her knees offering BJs to soldiers for a nickle per regiment just to keep the base’s financial impact in her district.
