You have touched on a subject dear to my heart. Most of the great films and actors appeared between 1934 and 1959 – exactly 25 years. There have been a handful of top-notch movies outside of those dates but most people would point to the Motion Picture Code Of America, which was in place from 34-59, as the reason for those high quality movies. Films had to have a compelling storyline, not just graphic sex and violence. Actors were looked up to as role models and usually did their best to fill that role. Look at Marlene Dietrich and her devotion to “her boys” (American GIs). Look at Chaplin begging the U.S. to enter WWII. Look at the patriotism of General Jimmy Stewart. All that selflessness and public service ended when The Code was abolished in ’59. Now actors and actresses are publicity whores and drug users, and we’d be hard pressed to name even a single person in the motion picture industry with intellect and integrity.
