Report: Obama’s Secret Talks With The Taliban Heating Up, Involves Transferring Gitmo Prisoners To Afghanistan…

(Reuters) — After 10 months of secret dialogue with Afghanistan’s Taliban insurgents, senior U.S. officials say the talks have reached a critical juncture and they will soon know whether a breakthrough is possible, leading to peace talks whose ultimate goal is to end the Afghan war.
As part of the accelerating, high-stakes diplomacy, Reuters has learned, the United States is considering the transfer of an unspecified number of Taliban prisoners from the Guantanamo Bay military prison into Afghan government custody.
It has asked representatives of the Taliban to match that confidence-building measure with some of their own. Those could include a denunciation of international terrorism and a public willingness to enter formal political talks with the government headed by Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
The officials acknowledged that the Afghanistan diplomacy, which has reached a delicate stage in recent weeks, remains a long shot. Among the complications: U.S. troops are drawing down and will be mostly gone by the end of 2014, potentially reducing the incentive for the Taliban to negotiate.
Still, the senior officials, all of whom insisted on anonymity to share new details of the mostly secret effort, suggested it has been a much larger piece of President Barack Obama’s Afghanistan policy than is publicly known.
U.S. officials have held about half a dozen meetings with their insurgent contacts, mostly in Germany and Doha with representatives of Mullah Omar, leader of the Taliban’s Quetta Shura, the officials said.

The bright spot is this will free up a lot of space in Gitmo for Obama and a lot of other folks in his administration should anybody grow enough balls to send theme there after the next election.
We should execute the Taliban prisoners before sending them to Afghanistan. They are enemy combatants.

All I can say is the friggin’ Taliban better snap their asses around and sign the deal pronto! Obama needs another box checked off on his “to do” list before the next election, and if he loses, the Taliban will face an administration that might not have a serial bum-nuzzler running it.

The Taliban and Al-queda are very loosely organized now. Whoever these US officials are negotiating with do not represent all of the Taliban and no agreement will be considered binding. They are not a legitimate government that we can deal with. This is not the final days of WW2 and they are not the last of the German generals holding out in the Bavarian Alps. What the hell is wrong with these people? I thought they were supposed to be the smartest administration evah but they don’t have a clue about who they are dealing with. The only way to negotiate with them is from a position of power and the threat of violent bloody death in the night. Even the rumors of American troops in the area should make them crap their pants.

The book excerpt on Amazon or Google Books will give a good perspective about this mash-pit which is Afghanistan from Alexander the Great to the Taliban/ISI.

Obama was raised a Muslim, spent time in Pakistan and was sponsored by a Saudi Prince. Hillary spent the 1990s in the WH watching Muslim aggression and treachery all over the Globe. Both know without a shred of doubt that the only “peace” possible with the Taliban is after their destruction with overwhelming force and that treating them like anything but barbaric terrorists only guarantees they will continue to kill and butcher at will. Thank God that moron George W isn’t still President; He would probably want to actually beat the Taliban instead of giving them what they want….what a simpleton.
Of course domestic politics has nothing to do with Barry’s foreign capitulation. I don’t know why he hasn’t yet proposed giving Alaska back to the Russians while he is still in power.

Westie, I agree it is folly to enter into a ground war in Afghanistan. Hindsight is 20/20: After invading, routing AQ and the Taliban, we could have put overwhelming force into play, utterly destroyed their strongholds and then simply left and let their opposition sort it out knowing that we could reach over the horizon anytime a threat presented itself. We chose not to do that. When we had OBL cornered and our special forces on the ground found themselves suddenly held at gunpoint by their former Muslim “allies”, there should have been 100,000 troops on the ground starting within hours to tell our “allies” to walk away or die and then finish the job and show we meant business. Nation building is simply friendly forced occupation that only works when the Occupied Country has been utterly destroyed or occupied for decades. Not having limited direct military objectives is a mistake—historically speaking–there is no rational reason to make especially in a War that has been going on for 1400 years.
Kill them or be killed by them . . . . easy choice to make if common sense is applied here . Something about common sense lizard tongues will never comprehend . Stupids negotiating with savages , yeah right , show me the history .
Why not drop them off at the Mexican border?
