Food Stamps: The Safety Net That Deserves Its Name — The Nation
. . . Ryan’s proposal, and the House budget that grew out of it, were defeated, but not without winning the support of almost every Republican in the House. And now there’s the sudden surge of Republican presidential front-runner Newt Gingrich, which can only portend ill for food stamps. Gingrich has been lobbing anti-SNAP bombs for months, but his most infamous, issued in May and repeated in December, was his slam calling Obama the “food stamp president” — a declaration of barely coded racism that harked back to decades of racially inspired attacks on food stamps, most notably Reagan’s slur about “strapping young bucks” dining out on T-bone steaks. Equally troubling, Jeff Sessions, an Alabama Republican with a record of racebaiting, led a charge in the Senate this past fall to “reform” food stamps by restricting eligibility and undoing a planned $9 billion budget increase, supposedly to crack down on fraud and government excess. (Notably, food stamp errors have reached record lows in recent years: only 2.7 percent of program costs in 2009, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities reported.)
The deep racism at the heart of conservative food stamp critiques offers at least one clue as to why the Obama administration has been unable or unwilling to champion SNAP as a valuable recession antidote: as the nation’s first African-American president, Obama is vulnerable to racist innuendo, which his opponents are only too happy to exploit. Just two months after Gingrich made his “food stamp president” comment, another would-be president, Rick Santorum, picked up the theme, accusing Obama, absurdly, of “pushing more people on food stamps.”

Most people who get food stamps aren’t black. The Nation is racist for making the association.
We all know the progressives want as many people to be on assistance as possible, and if they are targeting one particular race that makes it all the more despicable. But that says more about the traditional racism within the progressive movement than it does about its freedom loving critics.
I think it’s so sad that Christopher Hitchens died when he did, for two reasons.
First, he was intimately familiar with Iraq and all of the issues associated with it, and here we are just having left and who knows what might happen next.
We could really have used his insight.
And secondly, Hitch was as much of an “expert” on North Korea as just about any “Western” person could be – having sneaked into North Korea on assignment to see what REALLY goes on there.

How is this possible when it’s a fact that white folks make up the vast majority of people currently on food stamps?
The food stamp population breaks down like this: 42 percent white, 32 percent black, and 22 percent Latino.
What Gingrich is pointing out is that 15% of Americans now rely on food stamps — the highest percentage of the population ever to do so.
So when Gingrich calls Obama “The Food Stamp President”, it simply means that this is what Obama’s economic policies have wrought.
Gingrich also added the fact that he wants to be “The Paycheck President”.

I’ sure that everyone here can use google. From various government welfare reporting studies, based on the last US cesus:
The average household size of food stamp recipient households is 2.3 persons and the average gross monthly income is $640. Children make up 51% of food stamp recipients, and 65% of them reside in single parent households. In total, 79% of food stamp benefits are awarded to households with minor children.
41% of recipients are white. Whites make up ~53% and are therefore slightly under-represented. 36% of recipients are Black, Blacks make up 15% of the population and therefore are over-represented 2.5x. 18% of recipients are Hispanic. Hispanics make up 14% of the population; the proportion of Hispanic recipients is slightly over-represented. 3% of recipients are Asian. Asians make up 0.4% of the population and are there fore 10x over-represented. 2% of recipients are Native American. Native Americans make up slightly less than 1% of the population, are therefore are over represented 2x.
These are the facts. How you interpret them is something else. For instance they suggest (to me) a substantial level of real poverty in Black, Asian and Native American populations compared to white and Hispanic populations.

Any criticism of Obama —> racism.
I recall a couple of years ago standing in line at the Safeway behind a nice looking middle aged white lady. She saw a friend in the store and called her over to tell her about her recent Caribbean vacation cruise. When she got to the head of the line, she paid for her purchases with food stamps. No wonder she could afford to take a Caribbean cruise. I was buying my own groceries and hers too.
And just yesterday I was shopping at Publix. I was talking to the checkout clerk and she told me about all the customers who use food stamps for their food and cash for their liquor, cigarettes and lottery tickets. Nearly all the customers at this particular store happen to be white. Fuck them and fuck the Nation.
I don’t think we’ll ever be a nation without “safety nets”. Still, we can’t ignore the fact that an ever increasing percentage of Americans are jumping on the “Cloward-Pivin” bandwagon leaving an ever decreasing number of us who have jobs pulling the load. This is the schism which divides our country today.
We, collectively, must decide in 2012 what kind of a country we’re going to become. We’ve seen the results of a centrally planned economy complete with runaway unfinanced entitlements: Greece, Italy, Spain, the USSR, Cuba, etc, etc. Likewise, we have seen the results of unchecked, unregulated, unpoliced capitolism: Enron, Exxon Valdez, Deepwater Horizon, Bernie Madoff, etc, etc.
Why must we bogg down the public debate with frivolous minutia? Why can’t we have an intellectually honest and RESPECTFUL debate about the facts?
Make your point. Make it respectfully. Back up your premises with facts and let’s see if we can improve all of our lives without relying on compulsory charity (government handouts).
