Afghanistan Signs Its First Oil Deal With a Foreign Country . . . China…

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghanistan’s government signed a deal Wednesday with China’s state-owned National Petroleum Corporation, allowing it to become the first foreign company to exploit the country’s oil and natural gas reserves.
The contract, which covers the northeastern provinces of Sari Pul and Faryab, is the first of several such blocks to be put on the market in coming months, Afghan Minister of Mines Wahidullah Shahrani said during the signing ceremony.
Bidding information for blocks in neighboring Balkh province will be released at end of February, and for the western Herat province by next summer, he said.
The ministry listed the initial value of the project with CNPC as $700 million. But the total could be ten times greater if more reserves are found and developed, and if international oil prices remain at today’s levels, Shahrani said.

Bush is no genius but look at a map. How would a US company get the oil out of Afghanistan? A pipeline through Pakistan? That would get bombed every Friday after prayers. Iran? Good plan. Then you have possible hook ups to possible pipelines taking you through Turkmenistan with its kleptocratic autocracy or maybe Uzbekistan which suffers from ethnic unrest and a growing jihadi problem.
There is no way for a company from a democracy to get the oil out, assuming there is enough to warrant investment. The ChiComs will bring in their own guards and once they are there who is going to stop them.

For one, its not the federal government’s place to negotiate business deals. That’s supposed to be the Private Sector. For two, like Crudcutter said, it would be more expensive than it was worth, to get the oil out of there. Afghanistan is still an active war zone, with a hostile (Iran) next door. We wouldn’t use a pipeline; we’d probably just be barreling it, there, and shipping to the US via oil freighter. As we found out with the Iraq warfighting, the price of insuring these shipments skyrocketed into the hundreds of thousands, to the millions, when it used to be just a few thousand, and that was a situation when no one really attempted to attack any shipment. Afghanistan is rife with terrorists that are out to attack and destroy, even if its their own property. The cost of insuring an oil freighter that travels to Afghanistan would be astronomical, and the cost of oil coming out of there would be even higher, to defray costs like that. Its not worth it, especially when we’ve got so much oil, here, that the leftists keep blocking us from using.
No biggie, I’m sure plenty of our own thugs have cut some lucrative poppy deals.

I believe the conversation was being directed at Karzai and his loyalty to the people that made this possible. If the reports about the mineral wealth in Afghanistan are even half true, he will probably make sure we are last in line for that too.
This is going to turn out just like Bush’s useless war in Iraq.

While you have been sleeping China has quietly built a freeway across central Asia to the Caspian Sea. This includes all the infrastructure to go with that-refueling stations, motels for the drivers, restaurants, etc. The whole entire route has cell phone coverage, which is something you do not find in the US, BTW. They have done this not by hiring the locals to do any of the work-the workers all come from China. These workers live in compounds along the way where it is ‘little China’-the Chinese have little interaction with the locals. The workers the Chinese bring in to run and maintain these things all just so happen to be men between the ages of 20 and 35 (hint, hint).
Why did the Chinese do this? Not to be ‘nice’ and help the ‘stans’ come into the 21st century by providing them a road and modern infrastructure. It is to help facilitate building a pipeline and a railroad through them in order to haul mineral resources and oil back to China.
It makes sense for the ‘stans’ to sell to China. The people of central Asia have had to bend to the way the wind blows for centuries and and the wind is not coming from the west-it is coming from the east. They would not get their goods out any other way and they know that China does not tolerate BS like Islamofascists messing with them (they publicly execute them). The Chinese also do not give a damn about things like environmentalism or ‘human rights’, either (they make the people who do ‘disappear’). The Chinese will keep governments that are friendly to them in power and provide those government officials with lots and lots of money to stay that way-as long as they do what the Chinese want, of course.
BTW-for the sleepers out there in case you have not noticed the Chinese have been doing this in sub Saharan Africa, too. One of their latest things they are doing is basically ‘buying’ Zimbabwe in order to turn it into a giant plantation-to grow food to be shipped back to China. Zimbabwe once was the breadbasket of Africa and it will be again under them-but that food will all be going to China.
